The Curvilinear Relationship between Age and Emotional Aperture : The Moderating Role of Agreeableness
The capability to correctly recognize collective emotion expressions (i.e., emotional aperture) is crucial for effective social and work-related interactions. Yet, little remains known about the antecedents of this ability. The present study therefore aims to shed new light onto key aspects that may promote or diminish an individuals emotional aperture. We examine the role of age for this ability in an online sample of 181 participants (with an age range of 18 to 72 years, located in Germany), and we investigate agreeableness as a key contingency factor. Among individuals with lower agreeableness, on the one hand, our results indicate a curvilinear relationship between age and emotional aperture, such that emotional aperture remains at a relatively high level until these individuals middle adulthood (with a slight increase until their late 30s) and declines afterwards. Individuals with higher agreeableness, on the other hand, exhibit relatively high emotional aperture irrespective of their age. Together, these findings offer new insights for the emerging literature on emotional aperture, illustrating that specific demographic and personality characteristics may jointly shape such collective emotion recognition

The small molecule ISRIB reverses the effects of eIF2α phosphorylation on translation and stress granule assembly.
Previously, we identified ISRIB as a potent inhibitor of the integrated stress response (ISR) and showed that ISRIB makes cells resistant to the effects of eIF2α phosphorylation and enhances long-term memory in rodents (Sidrauski et al., 2013). Here, we show by genome-wide in vivo ribosome profiling that translation of a restricted subset of mRNAs is induced upon ISR activation. ISRIB substantially reversed the translational effects elicited by phosphorylation of eIF2α and induced no major changes in translation or mRNA levels in unstressed cells. eIF2α phosphorylation-induced stress granule (SG) formation was blocked by ISRIB. Strikingly, ISRIB addition to stressed cells with pre-formed SGs induced their rapid disassembly, liberating mRNAs into the actively translating pool. Restoration of mRNA translation and modulation of SG dynamics may be an effective treatment of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by eIF2α phosphorylation, SG formation, and cognitive loss
The Circular Velocity Curve of the Milky Way from to kpc
We measure the circular velocity curve of the Milky Way with
the highest precision to date across Galactocentric distances of kpc. Our analysis draws on the -dimensional phase-space coordinates of
luminous red-giant stars, for which we previously determined
precise parallaxes using a data-driven model that combines spectral data from
APOGEE with photometric information from WISE, 2MASS, and Gaia. We derive the
circular velocity curve with the Jeans equation assuming an axisymmetric
gravitational potential. At the location of the Sun we determine the circular
velocity with its formal uncertainty to be with systematic uncertainties at the
level. We find that the velocity curve is gently but significantly declining at
, with a systematic uncertainty of
, beyond the inner kpc. We exclude the inner
kpc from our analysis due to the presence of the Galactic bar, which
strongly influences the kinematic structure and requires modeling in a
non-axisymmetric potential. Combining our results with external measurements of
the mass distribution for the baryonic components of the Milky Way from other
studies, we estimate the Galaxy's dark halo mass within the virial radius to be
and a local dark matter
