Can analytical shading be art? Reflections on the canvas of experiments with ArcGIS and Surfer
Analityczne cieniowanie rze藕by
terenu, zapocz膮tkowane p贸艂 wieku temu, mimo wielu
prac teoretycznych i eksperymentalnych nie osi膮gn臋艂o
dotychczas jako艣ci cieniowania tradycyjnego
(r臋cznego). W artykule om贸wiono zasady i g艂贸wne
czynniki wp艂ywaj膮ce na efekt cieniowania analitycznego.
Podkre艣lono decyduj膮ce znaczenie numerycznego
modelu terenu (NMT), w tym jego w艂a艣ciwej
generalizacji, jako podstawy cieniowania. Eksperymentalne
pr贸by cieniowania w programach ArcGIS
i Surfer, maj膮ce na celu sprawdzenie mo偶liwo艣ci
zawartych w nich algorytm贸w, pokaza艂y znaczne podobie艅stwo
uzyskanych rezultat贸w. We wnioskach
autorzy pr贸buj膮 odpowiedzie膰 na pytanie zawarte
w tytule artyku艂u. Ich zdaniem cieniowanie analityczne
nie jest sztuk膮, poniewa偶 pi臋kna wynikaj膮cego
z artyzmu i do艣wiadczenia kartografa nie uda艂o si臋
dotychczas osi膮gn膮膰 za pomoc膮 algorytmicznej formalizacji.Despite numerous theoretical and experimental
studies of analytical relief shading, devised about
half a century ago, its quality has not yet reached the
excellence of traditional (manual) shading. The paper
discusses its basic principles and the main factors
affecting the quality of shading. It also stresses the
crucial importance of the digital terrain model used
as the basis for shading as well as the proper generalization
of the relief. Experiments with shading
modules of ArcGIS and Surfer, aiming to explore the
functionality of algorithms they employ, have demonstrated
significant similarity of the results. In conclusion,
the authors attempt to answer the question
posted in the title of the article. In their view, analytical
shading is not art because shading algorithms are
incapable of producing the visually beautiful effects
that an experienced cartographer with artistic talents
can create
Research and interpretation functions of the heat balance of the worker in the assessment of thermal load
W pracy om贸wiono spos贸b post臋powania w celu ograniczenia negatywnych dla organizmu ludzkiego skutk贸w pracy w gor膮cym mikroklimacie. Korzysta si臋 z racjonalnych metod oceny zagro偶enia stresem cieplnym, opartych na reakcjach fizjologicznych organizmu. W metodach tych opracowuje si臋 bilans cieplny, w kt贸rym uwzgl臋dnia si臋 wymian臋 ciep艂a i wilgoci mi臋dzy organizmem pracownika a otoczeniem. W artykule przytoczono niekt贸re z nich: temperatura powietrza na termometrze wilgotnym, wska藕nik WBGT, wska藕nik dyskomfortu, zdolno艣膰 ch艂odnicza otoczenia, australijska cieplna granica pracy. This paper presents a way of conduction in the reduction of adverse effects of work in hot microclimate. The rational methods of assessment of heat stress hazard, which are based on physiological reactions of human body are used. These methods allow to develop the heat balance which includes the exchange of heat and moisture between the body of the worker and the surroundings. Thus, it is possible to determine the limits of heat stress for the miner on the basis of physiological tolerance, expressed in body temperature and dehydration. If needed, the selection of workers and development of protection procedures are performed. By assessing the thermal conditions of work, separate measurements of air parameters, surrounding measurements as well as rational indexes, resulting from the heat balance of the worker are used. This paper presents some of them: the air temperature on the wet-bulb thermometer, WBGT index, discomfort index, cooling power of the surroundings, Australian thermal work limit (TWL)
