Third Interger Resonance Slow Extraction Using RFKO at High Space Charge
A proposal to search for direct {\mu}-->e conversion at Fermilab requires
slow, resonant extraction of an intense proton beam. Large space charge forces
will present challenges, partly due to the substantial betatron tune spread.
The main challenges will be maintaining a uniform spill profile and moderate
losses at the septum. We propose to use "radio frequency knockout" (RFKO) for
fine tuning the extraction. Strategies for the use of the RFKO method will be
discussed here in the context of the Mu2e experiment. The feasibility of this

Beam Based Measurements for Stochastic Cooling Systems at Fermilab
Improvement of antiproton stacking rates has been pursued for the last twenty years at Fermilab. The last twelve months have been dedicated to improving the computer model of the Stacktail system. The production of antiprotons encompasses the use of the entire accelerator chain with the exception of the Tevatron. In the Antiproton Source two storage rings, the Debuncher and Accumulator are responsible for the accumulation of antiprotons in quantities that can exceed 2 x 10{sup 12}, but more routinely, stacks of 5 x 10{sup 11} antiprotons are accumulated before being transferred to the Recycler ring. Since the beginning of this recent enterprise, peak accumulation rates have increased from 2 x 10{sup 11} to greater than 2.3 x 10{sup 11} antiprotons per hour. A goal of 3 x 10{sup 11} per hour has been established. Improvements to the stochastic cooling systems are but a part of this current effort. E835 at FNAL: Charmonium Spectroscopy in Annihilations

Interference Study of the chi_c0 (1^3P_0) in the Reaction Proton-Antiproton -> pi^0 pi^0
Fermilab experiment E835 has observed proton-antiproton annihilation
production of the charmonium state chi_c0 and its subsequent decay into pi^0
pi^0. Although the resonant amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than
that of the non-resonant continuum production of pi^0 pi^0, an enhanced
interference signal is evident. A partial wave expansion is used to extract
physics parameters. The amplitudes J=0 and 2, of comparable strength, dominate
the expansion. Both are accessed by L=1 in the entrance proton-antiproton
channel. The product of the input and output branching fractions is determined
to be B(pbar p -> chi_c0) x B(chi_c0 -> pi^0 pi^0)= (5.09 +- 0.81 +- 0.25) x

Precision measurements of the total and partial widths of the psi(2S) charmonium meson with a new complementary-scan technique in antiproton-proton annihilations
We present new precision measurements of the psi(2S) total and partial widths
from excitation curves obtained in antiproton-proton annihilations by Fermilab
experiment E835 at the Antiproton Accumulator in the year 2000. A new technique
of complementary scans was developed to study narrow resonances with
stochastically cooled antiproton beams. The technique relies on precise
revolution-frequency and orbit-length measurements, while making the analysis
of the excitation curve almost independent of machine lattice parameters. We
study the psi(2S) meson through the processes pbar p -> e+ e- and pbar p ->
J/psi + X -> e+ e- + X. We measure the width to be Gamma = 290 +- 25(sta) +-
4(sys) keV and the combination of partial widths Gamma_e+e- * Gamma_pbarp /
Gamma = 579 +- 38(sta) +- 36(sys) meV, which represent the most precise

Hydrogeochemical controls on brook trout spawning habitats in a coastal stream
Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) spawn in fall and
overwintering egg development can benefit from stable, relatively warm
temperatures in groundwater-seepage zones. However, eggs are also sensitive
to dissolved oxygen concentration, which may be reduced in discharging
groundwater (i.e., seepage). We investigated a 2 km reach of the coastal
Quashnet River in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, to relate preferred fish
spawning habitats to geology, geomorphology, and discharging groundwater
geochemistry. Thermal reconnaissance methods were used to locate zones of
rapid groundwater discharge, which were predominantly found along the central
channel of a wider stream valley section. Pore-water chemistry and temporal
vertical groundwater flux were measured at a subset of these zones during
field campaigns over several seasons. Seepage zones in open-valley
sub-reaches generally showed suboxic conditions and higher dissolved solutes
compared to the underlying glacial outwash aquifer. These discharge zones
were cross-referenced with preferred brook trout redds and evaluated during
10 years of observation, all of which were associated with discrete alcove
features in steep cutbanks, where stream meander bends intersect the glacial
valley walls. Seepage in these repeat spawning zones was generally stronger
and more variable than in open-valley sites, with higher dissolved oxygen and
reduced solute concentrations. The combined evidence indicates that regional
groundwater discharge along the broader valley bottom is predominantly
suboxic due to the influence of near-stream organic deposits; trout show no
obvious preference for these zones when spawning. However, the meander bends
that cut into sandy deposits near the valley walls generate strong oxic
seepage zones that are utilized routinely for redd construction and the
overwintering of trout eggs. Stable water isotopic data support the
conclusion that repeat spawning zones are located directly on preferential
discharges of more localized groundwater. In similar coastal systems with
extensive valley peat deposits, the specific use of groundwater-discharge points
by brook trout may be limited to morphologies such as cutbanks, where
groundwater flow paths do not encounter substantial buried organic material
and remain oxygen-rich.</p
A Study of Cosmic Ray Composition in the Knee Region using Multiple Muon Events in the Soudan 2 Detector
Deep underground muon events recorded by the Soudan 2 detector, located at a
depth of 2100 meters of water equivalent, have been used to infer the nuclear
composition of cosmic rays in the "knee" region of the cosmic ray energy
spectrum. The observed muon multiplicity distribution favors a composition
model with a substantial proton content in the energy region 800,000 -
