Space shuttle handling qualities
The initial Orbiter handling qualities requirements, their effect on the vehicle design, and how it all turned out through the first six orbital missions are reviewed. Specific areas consisting of hand controller considerations and the wheelie problem are discussed. The requirements for the pitch axis subsonic flight control system are reviewed. Results of recent simulator evaluations to compare the existing system at landing with several other configurations are presented
Synthesis and Characterization of Lipid Coated Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Vehicles
Spherical monodisperse nanoparticles composed of gold or silver cores were modified with lipids as part of an ongoing project to utilize functionalized nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles. A reduction reaction with sodium tri-citrate was used to synthesize nanoparticles that were characterized physically through a NanoSight LM10 HS particle sizer as well as optically with a Shimadzu UV-vis spectrophotometer. The particles were then characterized again after purification of excess ligands through centrifugation. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) was added to flip the surface charge of the particles from negative to positive as well as to serve as a stabilizing agent. After purification, the particles were coated with lipids and spun to purify them. Characterization data suggest that the particles are successfully coated with both poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and lipids and that monodispersity was maintained, as evidenced by the measured changes in size and optical properties
The impact of an emotionally expressive writing intervention on eating pathology in female students
© 2018 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Introduction: Previous research demonstrating emotional influences on eating and weight suggest that emotionally expressive writing may have a significant impact on reducing risk of eating pathology. This study examined the effects of writing about Intensely Positive Experiences on weight and disordered eating during a naturalistic stressor. Method: Seventy-one female students completed an expressive or a control writing task before a period of exams. Both groups were compared on BMI (kg/m2) and the Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q) before the writing task and at 8-week follow-up. A number of secondary analyses were also examined (to identify potential mediators) including measures of attachment, social rank, self-criticism and self-reassurance, stress and mood. Results: There was a significant effect of intervention on changes in the subscales of the EDE-Q (p = .03). Specifically, expressive writers significantly reduced their dietary restraint while those in the control group did not. There was no significant effect of the intervention on changes in BMI or the other subscales of the EDE-Q (Eating, Weight and Shape Concern). There was also no effect of writing on any of the potential mediators in the secondary analyses. Discussion: Emotionally expressive writing may reduce the risk of dietary restraint in women but these findings should be accepted with caution. It is a simple and light touch intervention that has the potential to be widely applied. However, it remains for future research to replicate these results and to identify the mechanisms of action.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Proportional hazards models with continuous marks
For time-to-event data with finitely many competing risks, the proportional
hazards model has been a popular tool for relating the cause-specific outcomes
to covariates [Prentice et al. Biometrics 34 (1978) 541--554]. This article
studies an extension of this approach to allow a continuum of competing risks,
in which the cause of failure is replaced by a continuous mark only observed at
the failure time. We develop inference for the proportional hazards model in
which the regression parameters depend nonparametrically on the mark and the
baseline hazard depends nonparametrically on both time and mark. This work is
motivated by the need to assess HIV vaccine efficacy, while taking into account
the genetic divergence of infecting HIV viruses in trial participants from the
HIV strain that is contained in the vaccine, and adjusting for covariate
effects. Mark-specific vaccine efficacy is expressed in terms of one of the
regression functions in the mark-specific proportional hazards model. The new
approach is evaluated in simulations and applied to the first HIV vaccine
efficacy trial.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/07-AOS554 the Annals of

Returned Solar Max hardware degradation study results
The Solar Maximum Repair Mission returned with the replaced hardware that had been in low Earth orbit for over four years. The materials of this returned hardware gave the aerospace community an opportunity to study the realtime effects of atomic oxygen, solar radiation, impact particles, charged particle radiation, and molecular contamination. The results of these studies are summarized
