LOSSGRAD: automatic learning rate in gradient descent
In this paper, we propose a simple, fast and easy to implement algorithm
LOSSGRAD (locally optimal step-size in gradient descent), which automatically
modifies the step-size in gradient descent during neural networks training.
Given a function , a point , and the gradient of , we aim
to find the step-size which is (locally) optimal, i.e. satisfies: Making use of quadratic
approximation, we show that the algorithm satisfies the above assumption. We
experimentally show that our method is insensitive to the choice of initial
learning rate while achieving results comparable to other methods.Comment: TFML 201
Periodic solutions in multivariate invariance arguments
Inspired by the recent results of A. E. Abbas we determine continuous multivariate utility functions invariant with respect to a wide family of transformations related to the shift transformations
THE INFLUENCE OF GRINDING CONDITIONS ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF RESIDUAL STRESS IN THE SURFACE LAYER OF 17crni6-6 STEEL AFTER CARBURIZING
This paper presents the results of a study aimed at determining the residual stress which results from developing the surface layer by low-pressure and conventional carburizing and grinding of 17CrNi6-6 steel. A synergistic effect of thermochemical and abrasive treatment was examined on ring samples used to study residual stress by Davidenkov’s method. Samples were subjected to vacuum carburizing and conventional carburizing, which was followed by grinding with a 38A60K8V aloxite grinding wheel and a CBN grinding wheel - RNB80/63B75V. The following cutting fluids were used during the grinding process: oil emulsion 5%, supply rate ca. 20 l/min, Micro5000 oil supplied at the minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) of ca. 25 ml/h, dry machining. The study determined the effect of the type of grinding wheel and the cooling and lubricating agent on the distribution of residual stress in the sur-face layer. The best effects of grinding with respect to the residual stress were achieved with flood cooling with oil emulsion and grinding with a CBN grinding wheel
Design of a system to analyse the performance of certified measuring instruments
The aim of this article is to present modern methods for analysing the performance of certified measuring instruments. The design of a system for analysing the performance of certified measuring instruments is presented. In the first part, the traditional process of certification of measuring instruments and methods of market surveillance are described. The other part proposes an electronic solution to support the certification process by supervising the correct operation of measuring instruments
Finding the Optimal Network Depth in Classification Tasks
We develop a fast end-to-end method for training lightweight neural networks
using multiple classifier heads. By allowing the model to determine the
importance of each head and rewarding the choice of a single shallow
classifier, we are able to detect and remove unneeded components of the
network. This operation, which can be seen as finding the optimal depth of the
model, significantly reduces the number of parameters and accelerates inference
across different hardware processing units, which is not the case for many
standard pruning methods. We show the performance of our method on multiple
network architectures and datasets, analyze its optimization properties, and
conduct ablation studies
FPGA-BASED MULTI-CORE PROCESSOR
The paper presents the results of investigations concerning the possibilities of using programmable logic devices (FPGA) for building virtual multi-core processors dedicated to the chosen application. The paper shows the designed architecture of multi-core processor specialized for performing a particular task and discuss its computation efficiency depending on the number of cores being used. The evaluation of the results are also discussed
‘There was a battle turned into a massacre’ The second stage of Polish-German fights for Uniejów during the Polish 10 September 1939 campaign
This aticle provides a description of the fights between the troops of the Podolia Cavalry Brigade of the Army “Poznań” and the 221 Infantry Division of Wermacht 8 Army on the night of 9/10 September and most of 10 September 1939. This battle was the second phase of the fights for Uniejów during this campaign and was connected with the biggest Polish counterattack undertaken at that time, known as “the battle of the Bzura”. This text presents the results of the research coducted by the authors on the fights that took place in September 1939 in the area of today’s Turek and Poddębice poviats. Earlier findings of the reseach have already been published in “Biuletyn Uniejowski”. Analysis of the second stage of the fighting is difficult because no archival material concerning this campaign has been preserved, so the authors have to rely on scanty existing relations, primarily the account of captain Andrzej Hlawaty, head of staff of the Podolia Cavalry Brigade, published after the war.
