iFocus: A Framework for Non-intrusive Assessment of Student Attention Level in Classrooms

    Get PDF
The process of learning is not merely determined by what the instructor teaches, but also by how the student receives that information. An attentive student will naturally be more open to obtaining knowledge than a bored or frustrated student. In recent years, tools such as skin temperature measurements and body posture calculations have been developed for the purpose of determining a student\u27s affect, or emotional state of mind. However, measuring eye-gaze data is particularly noteworthy in that it can collect measurements non-intrusively, while also being relatively simple to set up and use. This paper details how data obtained from such an eye-tracker can be used to predict a student\u27s attention as a measure of affect over the course of a class. From this research, an accuracy of 77% was achieved using the Extreme Gradient Boosting technique of machine learning. The outcome indicates that eye-gaze can be indeed used as a basis for constructing a predictive model

How Emerging Market Firms Compete in Global Markets

    Get PDF
We posit that contexts in emerging markets are different from developed country contexts. These contextual differences necessitate the development and deployment of unique capabilities and strategies on the parts of companies operating there. While all emerging market countries are not uniform across all of the characteristics described below, there is a great deal of commonality on these conditions within the group of emerging market countries, by virtue of their similar stages of development. Thus, companies that develop their skill sets and products/services in one emerging market are likely to more easily be able to extend them to others. Conversely, there are great differences in these characteristics in the developed group of countries

Globalization and International R&D Flows into Emerging Markets: Nomothetic Evidence

In this paper we analyze the impact of some determinants of international R&D expenditures made by overseas affiliates of MNCs. We also examine whether globalization has expedited international R&D investment flows since 1995, the year that internet access was opened up to mass usage and trade barriers began to concertedly decrease worldwide, following the emergence of the World Trade Organization (WTO). We find evidence that ethnic diversity, political stability, and patent rights enforcement promotes international flows of R&D investments. Increased workers’ educational levels appear to have contradicting effects on international R&D investment flows. When we isolated the effects of globalization into its component forces of technological advancement and trade liberalization, we found some notable interaction effects, especially involving trade barriers. Increased globalization since 1995 has increased international R&D flows in the face of diminishing tariff barriers. A dataset containing more countries and more recent time horizons should help to unravel some of the counter-intuitive and confounding results that our study has unearthed

Organizational Control Systems: Matching Controls with Organizational Levels

    Get PDF
Companies today face a number of risks, such as environmental liabilities, losses from misuse of derivatives or harassment suits, which underscore the need for better control systems. Clearly, there is a tradeoff between having too much versus too little control. However, in addition to the amount of control, the mix of controls is important in maintaining the right balance within an organization. A framework is proposed that should help managers determine the appropriate matching of control types and control levels in their organizations. The matching is discussed for both traditional companies and modern, information-age companies

This study assessed the importance of knowledge, skills, abilities (i.e., KSAs) and competencies for managerial success in China’s market economy. Business students at a major Chinese university were surveyed over a five year period, initially in 2001 and later in 2006, five years after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the explained variances in business acumen and social motivation skills were higher after China’s WTO entry. The results were reversed for communication skills. The results confirmed the predictive relevance of entrepreneurial behavior and adaptability in the model. Overall, the results suggest an enhanced appreciation for these KSAs after China’s WTO entry

Background: Chiari I malformations are defined as the downward herniation of cerebellar tonsils more than 5 mm through the foramen magnum. Syringomyelia is a common association of Chiari I malformation. Methods: This purpose of this study was to determine the various factors predicting the occurrence of syringomyelia in patients with Chiari I malformations. This retrospective study was conducted in Government medical college, Thrissur, Kerala, India. 27 patients admitted with diagnosis of symptomatic Chiari I malformations during the period of January 2015 to January 2019 were selected for the study. Results: The mean age was 22.8 years and syringomyelia was more common in patients older than 10 years (p value0.005). Females were 17(63%) and males were 10(37%) but there no difference in occurrence of syringomyelia among both sexes(p value is 0.16). Syringomyelia was present in 17(63%) cases. Association between various factors and syringomyelia measured by calculating P value which was 0.005 for age >10 years, 0.16 for sex, 0.093 for duration of symptoms >12 months, 0.05 for tonsillar descend >10mm and 0.097 for hypertension. The p value for the association of duration of symptoms >12months and extend of tonsillar descend is 0.001 Mean duration of symptoms (onset of first symptom to the time of presentation) was 16.3 months and syringomyelia was more common in patients with duration of symptoms more than 12 months but this difference was statistically not significant (p value 0.093). Mean tonsillar descend from the level of foramen magnum was 11.3 mms and syringomyelia was more common in patients with tonsillar herniation more than 10mm (p value 0.05). There is a statistically significant relationship between duration of symptoms more than 12 months and tonsillar descend more than 10mm(p value 0.001).There is no significant association between hypertension and occurrence of syringomyelia in patients with Chiari I malformation. Conclusions: Incidence of Chiari I Malformations is more among adults and it is slightly higher in females. Syringomyelia is a common association of Chiari I Malformations. The occurrence of syringomyelia in patients with Chiari I Malformations associated with increasing age of patients and extend of tonsillar herniation. There is no statistically significant association between syringomyelia and duration of symptoms or hypertension

Business Risk And Performance: An Examination Of Industry Effects

    Get PDF
Both business risk and industry sales volatility decreased across the computing equipment manufacturing, airline and pharmaceutical industries. Earnings performance and industry environmental munificence were both the highest among airlines. High volatility, while posing greater business risks, also offered the opportunity for improved risk-performance payoffs in the computer industry. Individual firms in the computer and pharmaceutical industries successfully reduced business risk while simultaneously increasing earnings performance (i.e., negative within-firm correlations), indicating idiosyncratic firm-specific effects

Feedforward Orientation in the Strategic Management Process: A Contingent Choice

    No full text
Is organizational performance influenced by an appropriate mix of 'feedforward' and 'feedback' activities at the business unit level ? Do certain environmental contingencies and strategic orientations require different proportions of these characteristics in the strategic management process in order to promote organizational eff activeness ? This research attempted to answer these and other questions by investigating the relative importance of 'feedforward' and 'feedback' characteristics employed in strategic planning and control processes. This balance between feedforward and feedback orientations was studied under different environmental contingencies and strategic orientations at the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) level. Dynamic environments were found to be associated with a feedforward orientation, as expected. Hostile environments required an emphasis on both feedforward and feedback orientations, which suggests that here, lessons from the past have to be coupled with sensitivity to the future. Complex or heterogeneous environments moderated the relationship between strategy and the feedforward orientation of the management process. Prospector strategies were normally associated with a feedforward orientation, and Defender strategies with a feedback orientation. However, these relationships were stronger in less heterogeneous environments and not significant -under conditions of high heterogeneity. In general, higher performance was strongly correlated with a greater feedforward orientation. Even here, conditions of high heterogeneity were observed to reduce the strength of this association, thereby confirming that a feedforward orientation was more useful when the complexity in the environment was relatively less. A major contribution from the research was the development of measures for the 'feedforward' orientation employed in the strategic planning and control package. The items to measure the 'feedforward orientation' were selected on the basis of preliminary tests conducted with carefully selected samples of. academics and managers in an Executive MBA class at the University of Pittsburgh. The primary sample for the main study consisted of 500 SBUs in the manufacturing sector (i.e., 20-39 SIC codes) which were picked at random from the 'Directory of Corporate Affiliations, 1984'. Data collection was accomplished through questionnaires mailed to the CEOs of these SBUs. Reliability was established through obtaining a second response from a different member of the SBU's top-management team
