    ¿Cómo alejar lo cercano?: Platón y el problema de la trascendencia

    El cristianismo muestra, en cualquiera de sus manifestaciones, un problema de incompatibilidad entre la naturaleza de Dios y su relación con el mundo que él mismo crea. El objeto de este texto consiste en tratar de formular apropiadamente este problema, que es el problema del fundamento y de la trascendencia. Para ello, examinaremos uno de los primeros casos en los que podemos encontrar una formulación de este tipo: la filosofía de Platón. En el Parménides se hallan expuestas y desarrolladas las operaciones que producen la relación de diferencia y jerarquía entre el fundamento y lo fundamentado. Tales operaciones constituyen el problema de la trascendencia. Palabras clave: fundamento, transcendencia, Platón, Parménides (diálogo), cristianismo.Abstract:Christianity shows, in any of its manifestations, that there is a problem of incompatibility between the nature of God and its relationship with the world that it creates. The aim of this text is to set out properly this problem, that is the problem of foundation and the problem of transcendence. In order to do that, we will examine one of the first cases where we can find this kind of formulation – Plato’s philosophy. In Plato’s Parmenides we identify the operations that produce difference and hierarchy in the relationship between foundation and founded.     A Web-Based GIS Tool for Progress Monitoring of Linear Construction Projects

    Efficient project monitoring is a key to a project’s success. Linear construction projects span across large distances and require similar activities to be carried out repeatedly over multiple small segments for project completion. Thus, monitoring their progress becomes challenging. This is a matter of concern since proper progress monitoring can aid in efficient utilization and distribution of project resources. Existing methods of monitoring are either time-consuming, expensive, or require significant human efforts. GIS has been used for monitoring linear projects, but the use has been limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential of using GIS for collecting and visualizing data for enhanced progress monitoring of linear projects. For this purpose, this study proposes a process incorporating GIS and various open-source platforms in the form of a figure. The open-source platforms used are Open Data Kit (ODK) tools, PostgreSQL (and its PostGIS extension), and different JavaScript libraries. The development and illustration of a Web-based GIS tool for progress monitoring of linear projects are the main objectives of the study. Visualization and quantification of project progress using this tool would result in time and cost savings due to reduction in manual efforts expended, manual errors in processing data, and time taken for the process. The developed tool would make progress monitoring easier, faster, and more efficient since site data can be recorded even in the absence of the internet and processed later

    Intercalant-mediated Kitaev exchange in Ag3LiIr2O6

    The recently synthesized Ag3LiIr2O6 has been proposed as a Kitaev magnet in proximity to the quantum spin liquid phase. We explore its microscopic Hamiltonian and magnetic ground state using many-body quantum chemistry methods and exact diagonalization techniques. Our calculations establish a dominant bond dependent ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange between Ir sites and find that the inclusion of Ag 4d orbitals in the configuration interaction calculations strikingly enhances the Kitaev exchange. Furthermore, using exact diagonalization of the nearest-neighbor fully anisotropic J−K−Γ Hamiltonian, we obtain the magnetic phase diagram as a function of further neighbor couplings. We find that the antiferromagnetic off-diagonal coupling stabilizes long range order, but the structure factor calculations suggest that the material is very close to the quantum spin liquid phase and the ordered state can easily collapse into a liquid by small perturbations such as structural distortion or bond disorder

    Harnessing the power of complex light propagation in multimode fibers for spatially resolved sensing

    The propagation of coherent light in multimode optical fibers results in a speckled output that is both complex and sensitive to environmental effects. These properties can be a powerful tool for sensing, as small perturbations lead to significant changes in the output of the fiber. However, the mechanism to encode spatially resolved sensing information into the speckle pattern and the ability to extract this information is thus far unclear. In this paper, we demonstrate that spatially dependent mode coupling is crucial to achieving spatially resolved measurements. We leverage machine learning to quantitatively extract this spatially resolved sensing information from three fiber types with dramatically different characteristics and demonstrate that the fiber with the highest degree of spatially dependent mode coupling provides the greatest accuracy.Comment: 17 pages and 7 figure

    National profile of foot orthotic provision in the United Kingdom, part 1 : practitioners and scope of practice.

    Foot orthoses have been advocated in the management of a wide range of clinical foot and lower limb problems and are within the scope of podiatry, orthotic and physiotherapy practice. Previous reports into the provision of orthoses have consistently identified significant issues with services and devices, but data were never specific to foot orthoses. The aim of this first of a series of papers was to report the first ever national multi professional profile of foot orthosis provision in the United Kingdom. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from podiatrists, orthotists and physiotherapists via an online questionnaire. The topics, questions and answers were developed through a series of pilot phases. The professions were targeted through electronic and printed materials. Data were captured over a 10 month period in 2016. A total of 499 responses were included in analysis, including 357 podiatrists, 93 orthotists and 49 physiotherapists. The results reveal wide ranging practices across podiatrists, orthotists and physiotherapists, provision of orthoses through different health care departments (uni and multidisciplinary), for different health conditions (acute and chronic), and involving different types of orthoses (prefabricated and customised). Foot orthoses in the United Kingdom are provided in areas of well recognised health and rehabilitation priorities. A wide range of orthotic devices and practices are employed and different professions provide foot orthoses in different ways

    Background A national survey recently provided the first description of foot orthotic provision in the United Kingdom. This article aims to profile and compare the foot orthoses practice of podiatrists, orthotists and physiotherapists within the current provision. Method Quantitative data were collected from podiatrists, orthotists and physiotherapists via an online questionnaire. The topics, questions and answers were developed through a series of pilot phases. The professions were targeted through electronic and printed materials advertising the survey. Data were captured over a 10 month period in 2016. Differences between professions were investigated using Chi squared and Fischer’s exact tests, and regression analysis was used to predict the likelihood of each aspect of practice in each of the three professions. Results Responses from 357 podiatrists, 93 orthotists and 49 physiotherapists were included in the analysis. The results reveal statistically significant differences in employment and clinical arrangements, the clinical populations treated, and the nature and volume of foot orthoses caseload. Conclusion Podiatrists, orthotists and physiotherapists provide foot orthoses to important clinical populations in both a prevention and treatment capacity. Their working context, scope of practice and mix of clinical caseload differs significantly, although there are areas of overlap. Addressing variations in practice could align this collective workforce to national allied health policy

    Resequencing PNMT in European hypertensive and normotensive individuals: no common susceptibilily variants for hypertension and purifying selection on intron 1

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human linkage and animal QTL studies have indicated the contribution of genes on Chr17 into blood pressure regulation. One candidate gene is <it>PNMT</it>, coding for phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase, catalyzing the synthesis of epinephrine from norepinephrine.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fine-scale variation of <it>PNMT </it>was screened by resequencing hypertensive (n = 50) and normotensive (n = 50) individuals from two European populations (Estonians and Czechs). The resulting polymorphism data were analyzed by statistical genetics methods using Genepop 3.4, PHASE 2.1 and DnaSP 4.0 software programs. <it>In silico </it>prediction of transcription factor binding sites for intron 1 was performed with MatInspector 2.2 software.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>PNMT </it>was characterized by minimum variation and excess of rare SNPs in both normo- and hypertensive individuals. None of the SNPs showed significant differences in allelic frequencies among population samples, as well as between screened hypertensives and normotensives. In the joint case-control analysis of the Estonian and the Czech samples, hypertension patients had a significant excess of heterozygotes for two promoter region polymorphisms (SNP-184; SNP-390). The identified variation pattern of <it>PNMT </it>reflects the effect of purifying selection consistent with an important role of PNMT-synthesized epinephrine in the regulation of cardiovascular and metabolic functions, and as a CNS neurotransmitter. A striking feature is the lack of intronic variation. <it>In silico </it>analysis of <it>PNMT </it>intron 1 confirmed the presence of a human-specific putative Glucocorticoid Responsive Element (GRE), inserted by <it>Alu</it>-mediated transfer. Further analysis of intron 1 supported the possible existence of a full Glucocorticoid Responsive Unit (GRU) predicted to consist of multiple gene regulatory elements known to cooperate with GRE in driving transcription. The role of these elements in regulating <it>PNMT </it>expression patterns and thus determining the dynamics of the synthesis of epinephrine is still to be studied.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest that the differences in PNMT expression between normotensives and hypertensives are not determined by the polymorphisms in this gene, but rather by the interplay of gene expression regulators, which may vary among individuals. Understanding the determinants of PNMT expression may assist in developing PNMT inhibitors as potential novel therapeutics.</p
