    A WEBGIS for the knowledge and conservation of the historical wall structures of the 13th–18th centuries

    The presented work is part of the research project, titled "Tecniche murarie tradizionali: conoscenza per la conservazione ed il miglioramento prestazionale" (Traditional building techniques: from knowledge to conservation and performance improvement), with the purpose of studying the building techniques of the 13th–18th centuries in the Sardinia Region (Italy) for their knowledge, conservation, and promotion. The end purpose of the entire study is to improve the performance of the examined structures. In particular, the task of the authors within the research project was to build a WebGIS to manage the data collected during the examination and study phases. This infrastructure was entirely built using Open Source software. The work consisted of designing a database built in PostgreSQL and its spatial extension PostGIS, which allows to store and manage feature geometries and spatial data. The data input is performed via a form built in HTML and PHP. The HTML part is based on Bootstrap, an open tools library for websites and web applications. The implementation of this template used both PHP and Javascript code. The PHP code manages the reading and writing of data to the database, using embedded SQL queries. As of today, we surveyed and archived more than 300 buildings, belonging to three main macro categories: fortification architectures, religious architectures, residential architectures. The masonry samples investigated in relation to the construction techniques are more than 150. The database is published on the Internet as a WebGIS built using the Leaflet Javascript open libraries, which allows creating map sites with background maps and navigation, input and query tools.     The Influence of the Aspect Ratio on the Lateral Response of the Sheathed Cold Formed Steel Walls

    The influence of the aspect ratio on the lateral response of cold formed steel walls is analyzed by three design methodologies. In particular the prediction provided by the AISI Lateral Design, that is at the moment the main document for the design of CFS buildings under horizontal loads, is compared with the results obtained by applying the principles of mechanics and with those provided by non-linear finite element models. This paper presents and discusses in terms of strength and stiffness the validity of the different design methodologies in case of non-conventional wall aspect ratios comparing the numerical results with available experimental data

    Coarse Grained Density Functional Theories for Metallic Alloys: Generalized Coherent Potential Approximations and Charge Excess Functional Theory

    The class of the Generalized Coherent Potential Approximations (GCPA) to the Density Functional Theory (DFT) is introduced within the Multiple Scattering Theory formalism for dealing with, ordered or disordered, metallic alloys. All GCPA theories are based on a common ansatz for the kinetic part of the Hohenberg-Kohn functional and each theory of the class is specified by an external model concerning the potential reconstruction. The GCPA density functional consists of marginally coupled local contributions, does not depend on the details of the charge density and can be exactly rewritten as a function of the appropriate charge multipole moments associated with each lattice site. A general procedure based on the integration of the 'qV' laws is described that allows for the explicit construction the same function. The coarse grained nature of the GCPA density functional implies great computational advantages and is connected with the O(N) scalability of GCPA algorithms. Moreover, it is shown that a convenient truncated series expansion of the GCPA functional leads to the Charge Excess Functional (CEF) theory [E. Bruno, L. Zingales and Y. Wang, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 166401 (2003)] which here is offered in a generalized version that includes multipolar interactions. CEF and the GCPA numerical results are compared with status of art LAPW full-potential density functional calculations for 62, bcc- and fcc-based, ordered CuZn alloys, in all the range of concentrations. These extensive tests show that the discrepancies between GCPA and CEF are always within the numerical accuracy of the calculations, both for the site charges and the total energies. Furthermore, GCPA and CEF very carefully reproduce the LAPW site charges and the total energy trends.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure

    Rebound effects of NCX3 pharmacological inhibition: A novel strategy to accelerate myelin formation in oligodendrocytes

    The Na+/Ca2+ exchanger NCX3 is an important regulator of sodium and calcium homeostasis in oligodendrocyte lineage. To date, no information is available on the effects resulting from prolonged exposure to NCX3 blockers and subsequent drug washout in oligodendroglia. Here, we investigated, by means of biochemical, morphological and functional analyses, the pharmacological effects of the NCX3 inhibitor, the 5–amino-N-butyl-2–(4–ethoxyphenoxy)-benzamide hydrochloride (BED), on NCXs expression and activity, as well as intracellular [Na+]i and [Ca2+]i levels, during treatment and following drug washout both in human MO3.13 oligodendrocytes and rat primary oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs). BED exposure antagonized NCX activity, induced OPCs proliferation and [Na+]i accumulation. By contrast, 2 days of BED washout after 4 days of treatment significantly upregulated low molecular weight NCX3 proteins, reversed NCX activity, and increased intracellular [Ca2+]i. This BED-free effect was accompanied by an upregulation of NCX3 expression in oligodendrocyte processes and accelerated expression of myelin markers in rat primary oligodendrocytes. Collectively, our findings show that the pharmacological inhibition of the NCX3 exchanger with BED blocker maybe followed by a rebound increase in NCX3 expression and reversal activity that accelerate myelin sheet formation in oligodendrocytes. In addition, they indicate that a particular attention should be paid to the use of NCX inhibitors for possible rebound effects, and suggest that further studies will be necessary to investigate whether selective pharmacological modulation of NCX3 exchanger may be exploited to benefit demyelination and remyelination in demyelinating diseases

    Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gasotransmitter recently emerged as an important regulatory mediator of numerous human cell functions in health and in disease. In fact, much evidence has suggested that hydrogen sulfide plays a significant role in many physio-pathological processes, such as inflammation, oxidation, neurophysiology, ion channels regulation, cardiovascular protection, endocrine regulation, and tumor progression. Considering the plethora of physiological effects of this gasotransmitter, the protective role of H2S donors in different disease models has been extensively studied. Based on the growing interest in H2S-releasing compounds and their importance as tools for biological and pharmacological studies, this review is an exploration of currently available H2S donors, classifying them by the H2S-releasing-triggered mechanism and highlighting those potentially useful as promising drugs in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases

    Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer in families from southern Italy (Sicily)—Prevalence and geographic distribution of pathogenic variants in BRCA1/2 genes

    Recent advances in the detection of germline pathogenic variants (PVs) in BRCA1/2 genes have allowed a deeper understanding of the BRCA-related cancer risk. Several studies showed a significant heterogeneity in the prevalence of PVs across different populations. Because little is known about this in the Sicilian population, our study was aimed at investigating the prevalence and geographic distribution of inherited BRCA1/2 PVs in families from this specific geographical area of Southern Italy. We retrospectively collected and analyzed all clinical information of 1346 hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer patients genetically tested for germline BRCA1/2 PVs at University Hospital Policlinico “P. Giaccone” of Palermo from January 1999 to October 2019. Thirty PVs were more frequently observed in the Sicilian population but only some of these showed a specific territorial prevalence, unlike other Italian and European regions. This difference could be attributed to the genetic heterogeneity of the Sicilian people and its historical background. Therefore hereditary breast and ovarian cancers could be predominantly due to BRCA1/2 PVs different from those usually detected in other geographical areas of Italy and Europe. Our investigation led us to hypothesize that a higher prevalence of some germline BRCA PVs in Sicily could be a population-specific genetic feature of BRCA-positive carriers

    Seismic behaviour of “all-steel” CFS structures: Design criteria

    The search for innovative building methods to ensure high structural, technological and environmental performance is promoting the development of light gauge steel structural systems. Among them, stick-built constructions realized with Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) profiles are attracting considerable interest in the construction sector and in the recent research studies. Nevertheless, the main European structural code for seismic design, the Eurocode 8 part 1 (EN 1998-1) [1], does not provide any prescription for the seismic design of CFS structures. Presently, the "North American Standard for Cold Formed Steel Framing - Lateral Design" AISI S213-07 [2] represents the only reference for the design of this structural typology under seismic actions. This document is developed by the American Iron and Steel Institute Committee on Framing Standards and it codifies the design of different seismic resistant CFS systems for Canada, Mexico and United States. As an effort to define the seismic design criteria for such structures, an extended theoretical and experimental study aimed to investigate the seismic behaviour of strap-braced stud shear walls has been carried out within RELUIS –DPC 2010-2013 research project. The research included a wide experimental campaign as well as theoretical analyses to define criteria for the seismic design of strap braced CFS structures. Among the different steel seismic-resistant systems regulated by the EN 1998-1, traditional concentrically braced frame (X diagonal) represents the closest system to the investigated one. In this paper a critical analysis of the current standards is illustrated, with particular reference to the analysis and comparison of the existing provisions for the two similar structural typologies (traditional concentrically braced frames and strap braced CFS system). Based on the results of that critical analysis, the design hypotheses for the definition of a case study have been defined. In addition, on the basis of the adopted design assumptions and the experimental results [3], guidelines for the seismic design of strap braced CFS structures are proposed
