    Incentives, Gaming, and the Nonlinear Pay Scheme: Evidence from Personnel Data in a Large Japanese Auto Sales Firm

    This paper examines incentives and gaming behavior in a sales workforce using personnel records from one of Japan's largest auto sales chains. The company replaced a simple, linear compensation system in 2000 with nonlinear pay scheme kinked around a draw line. Econometric analysis indicates the following. First, the new pay scheme yields productivity increases, although a month-end deadline induces gaming behavior. Second, the incentive effect is weaker for used car sales staff than for new car sales staff. The difference can be attributed to disincentives such as smaller gross profits and larger servicing burdens that discouraged workers near the threshold from putting forth additional effort.Compensation, Automobile Dealership, Incentives, Gaming

    Effect of solute atoms on dislocation motion in Mg: an electronic structure perspective.

    Solution strengthening is a well-known approach to tailoring the mechanical properties of structural alloys. Ultimately, the properties of the dislocation/solute interaction are rooted in the electronic structure of the alloy. Accordingly, we compute the electronic structure associated with, and the energy barriers to dislocation cross-slip. The energy barriers so obtained can be used in the development of multiscale models for dislocation mediated plasticity. The computed electronic structure can be used to identify substitutional solutes likely to interact strongly with the dislocation. Using the example of a-type screw dislocations in Mg, we compute accurately the Peierls barrier to prismatic plane slip and argue that Y, Ca, Ti, and Zr should interact strongly with the studied dislocation, and thereby decrease the dislocation slip anisotropy in the alloy

    X-Ray Evidence of an AGN in M82

    An X-ray spectrum of the famous starburst galaxy M82 consists of three components: soft, medium, and hard components (Tsuru et al. 1997). The spectrum of the hard component, which is spatially unresolved, is well represented by an absorbed thermal bremsstrahlung, or an absorbed power-law model. However the origin of the hard component was unclear. Thus, we made a monitoring observation with ASCA in 1996. Although the X-ray flux of the soft and medium components remained constant, a significant time variability of the hard component was found between 3Ɨ10403\times10^{40} erg/s and 1Ɨ10411\times10^{41} erg/s at various time scales from 10 ks to a month. The temperature or photon index of the hard component also changed. We proved that the spatial position of the hard component is the center of M82. The spectrum of the variable source obtained by subtracting the spectrum of the lowest state from the highest state suggests the strong absorption of NHāˆ¼1022N_{\rm H} \sim 10^{22} cm2^2, which means the variable source is embedded in the center of M82. All these suggest that a low-luminosity AGN exists in M82.Comment: 15pages for text and tables. 13pages for figure

The phase of the wave function which depends on both time and space is also presented explicitly. The probability density of the electron changes its width and central position periodically.     Ultrasonic Implantation of Bioactive Glass Particles into Poly(methyl methacrylate) Substrates

    Poly(methyl methacrylate) substrates were immersed in suspensions containing bioactive 50CaOļ½„50SiO(2) (mol%) glass particles (45 Ī¼m in diameter) and a 6:4 (volume fraction) mixture of ethanol and THF, and an ultrasonic energy was applied to the system. A layer of glass particles was implanted and covered more than 50% of the substrate surface. Thin film X-ray diffraction patterns and FT-IR reflection spectra indicated deposition of apatite on the glass-implanted substrates after they were soaked for 12 h in a simulated body fluid similar in apatite-deposition ability to the human blood plasma. Flake-like apatite crystallites formed on the substrate soaked in SBF for 3 days
