    Passion: a narrative journey to family and consumer sciences education

    The goal of this study was to examine the development of passion for the profession of family and consumer sciences (FCS) in three undergraduate students majoring in FCS education. The first purpose was to ascertain an understanding of participants\u27 identification with FCS education and their decisions to declare it as a major. The second purpose was to examine the participants\u27 knowledge of the content with an understanding of the integrative nature of the FCS profession. The third purpose was to identify the participants\u27 motivation and passion for being FCS educators.;Narrative inquiry was used to investigate the participants\u27 lived experiences of the journey to FCS education. Themes that emerged included: pivotal moments in the journey, first exposure to FCS, advising and academic experiences in FCS, family background and influences, God\u27s plan for selecting FCS education, participants\u27 interpretations of the mission of the FCS profession, their development of personal missions, benefits of being FCS educators, passion for FCS, and commitment to FCS education.;A result of the research was the development of the process of developing passion for family and consumer sciences education model. The model depicts five steps in the process of developing passion for FCS education. The first step, identify, involved identifying FCS education as a program of study. The second step, knowledge, required that participants develop knowledge of the FCS content with an understanding of the integrative nature of the FCS profession. The third step, personal and professional alignment, involved participants interpreting the mission of the profession, internalizing those interpretations, and developing personal missions aligned with their interpretations. Motivation was the fourth step in the process of developing passion for FCS education. Alignment with the profession\u27s mission and personal interpretations of that mission provided the motivation for the participants to pursue FCS education. This motivation led to the development of commitment, the fifth step in the process of developing passion for FCS education. As the researcher, I am led to believe that passionate professionals are more likely to demonstrate their commitment to the profession and that passion will be the propelling force that motivates them to become advocates for anything that may challenge their personal and professional missions. Developing passion for FCS education is a process beginning with the first step of identifying the FCS education major. Passion continues to develop as one progresses through the aforementioned five steps.;This study reveals the importance of providing inspiring educational and advising experiences within programs of study at the undergraduate level and encouraging the development of commitment in future professionals who will become leaders in their chosen fields

    VIGILANCE OF NESTING WHOOPING CRANES IN JUNEAU COUNTY, WISCONSIN

    Vigilance plays an important role in the detection of possible threats and reducing the risk of predation, including during the incubation period. We examined the visual vigilance of incubating whooping cranes (Grus americana) in Juneau County, Wisconsin, during the 2019 nesting season. We deployed 9 trail cameras and tagged crane presence and behavior in 32,801 photos which were used in our analysis. We assessed individual nest and environmental variables and their effects on vigilant behavior of incubating cranes using linear mixed-models. Vigilant behavior was defined by a posture in which the crane’s head was up, neck was erect, and bill was horizontal to the ground. Nesting whooping cranes were less vigilant during the night (x̄ = 14.3 ± 1.4% [SE]) than during the day (25.0 ± 0.7%), and cranes were less vigilant during precipitation events. Cranes nesting closer to closed forest were 11-12% less vigilant than those nesting at medium or far distances from forest. Lastly, cranes nesting in medium-sized wetlands were 4-5% more vigilant than cranes in small or large wetlands. Further research to determine if levels of vigilance affect nest success could help increase productivity for this population

    In this paper we describe the success of bringing Creative Computation via Processing into two very different high schools that span the range of possibilities of grades 9-12 in American education. Creative Computation is an emerging discipline that requires a thorough grounding in both media arts and computing. We report on how contextualized computing that supports integration of media arts, design, and computer science can successfully attract and motivate students to learn foundations of programming and come back for more. The work of two high school teachers with divergent pedagogical styles is presented. They successfully adapted a college-level Creative Computation curriculum to their individual school cultures providing a catalyst for significant increases in total enrollment as well as female participation in high school computer science

    Oral Cancer Prevalence in Virginia

    Purpose. Oral and pharyngeal cancer affects 30,000 Americans a year and kills one fourth of those diagnosed. The primary risk factors for oral cancer are past or present cigarette and tobacco usage, and alcohol consumption in conjunction with tobacco use. Even though the prevalence of oral cancer is relatively low in the younger age groups, this group is most likely to benefit from intervention programs designed to change risky behavior such as smoking, and to prevent oral cancer in the later years. The goal of the study was to identify high-risk target areas for an oral cancer prevention program in Virginia. Methods and Materials. The specific objectives were to analyze the 1986 to 2001 Oral Biopsy Database from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry for diagnosed cases of oral cancer. To test the hypothesis that Hampton Roads, Virginia would be a high-risk target area, diagnoses were correlated with the 11 zip-code regions in Virginia to identify specific geographical areas with high numbers of oral cancer cases. The oral cancer data set consisted of 4,712 cases. Frequencies and cross-tabulations were calculated for all the variables using Statistical Package for Social Scientists software (SPSS Inc., version 10.1, Chicago, IL). Results. Results indicated that the Hampton Roads region had the second highest number of squamous cell carcinomas, with 231 total cases. The Richmond area had 435cases, almost twice as many. Conclusions. Therefore, Hampton Roads and Richmond are high-risk target areas that would benefit from an aggressive oral cancer prevention and intervention program in its public schools

    TWENTY-YEAR STATUS OF THE EASTERN MIGRATORY WHOOPING CRANE REINTRODUCTION

    Since the 10-year status update in 2011, the first parent-reared whooping cranes (Grus americana) were released in the Eastern Migratory Population, the ultralight program (UL) ended, and cranes were released at new sites in eastern Wisconsin. During 2011-2020, 117 captive-reared whooping cranes were released; 75 costume-reared (35 in UL and 40 in the Direct Autumn Release program) and 42 parent-reared. There were no significant differences in 1- or 3-year survival rates based on rearing technique or release site. The population size remained at about 100 cranes during 2010-2018 but then decreased during 2018-2020 due to a reduced number of releases of captive-reared cranes and low recruitment. Predation remained the leading cause of death (54.1% of confirmed cases) for cases in which the cause of death could be determined, followed by impact trauma (18.8%), gunshot (10.5%), and disease (9.0%). The winter distribution shifted northward into more agricultural landscapes, with the majority of the population wintering in southern Indiana or northern Alabama. The summer distribution remained concentrated in Wisconsin, and breeding areas expanded into eastern Wisconsin. As a management response to nest abandonments caused by avian-feeding black flies (Simulium spp.), the first clutch of eggs was removed from nests at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge (i.e., forced renesting), which increased renesting rates from 42% to 79%. In total, 152 cranes were confirmed to have hatched in the wild, 27 of which survived to fledging. Two male whooping cranes nested with female sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) and produced hybrid chicks. Three cranes were removed from the population due to using an active air strip on an Air National Guard base. As of April 2021, the estimated population size was 76 individuals (38 females, 36 males, and 2 of unknown sex), 16 of which were wild-hatched

    Engaging Asian faith communities and counselling psychology perspectives in the development of older adult services

    This mixed methods study investigates how counselling psychology perspectives can collaborate with the Sikh community in the development of Older Adult Psychology Services. 73 Sikh participants, aged 45-65 years contributed in English and Punjabi through interview, questionnaire or focus group at multiple community sites across 3 metropolitan boroughs in Sandwell. Qualitative data from validated scenarios and personal experience were analysed by a thematic approach informed by Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Master themes were identified for religion, quality of life and service development. The SF12v2 (Ware et al., 2005) is a measure of health and well-being which showed just below average population norms for physical and mental health components of well-being for the Sikh Community. The God Locus of Health Control Scale (Wallston et al., 1999) demonstrated religion‟s importance, and how karma is integral to Sikhs‟ understanding and management of health. 80.6% (N=31) prefer older adult service providers to account for their religious beliefs and counselling psychologists are recommended to address this request in their engagement with this community.     Enhanced User Interface for Scrubbing Video Segments

    When watching video content, users often skip to specific moments within the video, rewatch specific parts, or navigate between sections of interest. Such actions are supported via user interface elements such as a scrubber bar with a scrubber knob that display the progress and current playback position within the video, respectively. This disclosure describes techniques for display of UI components and timed metadata related to the playback of video content. The UI helps viewers find and navigate to specific marked moments or sections of interest within a video. When a user scrubs a video using the scrubber bar or scrubber knob inside the start and end bounds of a segment, the corresponding chapter is highlighted within the scrubber bar by increasing the size and/or contrast of the segment and the knob within the bar. Increasing the size provides a zoomed-in view of the bar that makes it easier for a user to interact with the scrubber bar and knob to find the position of interest as well as to see smaller marker segments contained within a larger chapter segment. In addition, the UI includes annotations that provide relevant information, such as title of the segment, thumbnail and timestamp for the frame at the scrubber knob position, etc
