Mapping monojet constraints onto Simplified Dark Matter Models
The move towards simplified models for Run II of the LHC will allow for
stronger and more robust constraints on the dark sector. However there already
exists a wealth of Run I data which should not be ignored in the run-up to Run
II. Here we reinterpret public constraints on generic beyond-standard-model
cross sections to place new constraints on a simplified model. We make use of
an ATLAS search in the monojet missing energy channel to constrain a
representative simplified model with the dark matter coupling to an
axial-vector . We scan the entire parameter space of our chosen model to
set the strongest current collider constraints on our model using the full 20.3
fb ATLAS 8 TeV dataset and provide predictions for constraints that can
be set with 20 fb of 14 TeV data. Our technique can also be used for the
interpretation of Run II data and provides a broad benchmark for comparing
future constraints on simplified models.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures; v2: added references, corrected mistake in

Universal Critical Behavior of Noisy Coupled Oscillators
We study the universal thermodynamic properties of systems consisting of many
coupled oscillators operating in the vicinity of a homogeneous oscillating
instability. In the thermodynamic limit, the Hopf bifurcation is a dynamic
critical point far from equilibrium described by a statistical field theory. We
perform a perturbative renormalization group study, and show that at the
critical point a generic relation between correlation and response functions
appears. At the same time the fluctuation-dissipation relation is strongly
violated.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur
Implementing and reasoning about hash-consed data structures in Coq
We report on four different approaches to implementing hash-consing in Coq
programs. The use cases include execution inside Coq, or execution of the
extracted OCaml code. We explore the different trade-offs between faithful use
of pristine extracted code, and code that is fine-tuned to make use of OCaml
programming constructs not available in Coq. We discuss the possible
consequences in terms of performances and guarantees. We use the running
example of binary decision diagrams and then demonstrate the generality of our
solutions by applying them to other examples of hash-consed data structures
Transportation networks and the location of human activities
The impact of transportation networks on the location of human activities is a surprisingly neglected topic in economic geography. Using the simple plant location problem, this paper investigates such an impact in the case of a few idealized networks. It is seen that a grid network tends to foster a dispersed pattern of activities, while the center of a radial network acts as an attractor. The case of two economies characterized by different network configurations that form a custom union is then analyzed. It is shown that the structural properties of the networks still hold, though some locations are pulled toward the common border. This suggests that no much relocation should be expected within the European Union if the state members endorse similar fiscal and social policies after the formation of the single market.
Compost and digestate: sustainability, benefits, impacts for the environment and for plant production
This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at the CODIS 2008 congress held on 27 - 29 February 2008 in Solothurn (Switzerland). The composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and the subsequent application of compost and digestate to soil contributes to nutrient recycling and renewable energy production. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants hazardous to soil, such as heavy metals and organic contaminants.Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated in the framework of two associated projects entitled Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland and Effects of Composts and Digestate on the Environment, Soil Fertility and Plant Health. These projects yielded new insights into the properties of compost and digestate, mainly with regard to biological parameters and the occurrence of both classic and emerging organic pollutants. The CODIS 2008 congress was the final event of these two projects
Electroweak Bremsstrahlung in Dark Matter Annihilation
A conservative upper bound on the total dark matter (DM) annihilation rate
can be obtained by constraining the appearance rate of the annihilation
products which are hardest to detect. The production of neutrinos, via the
process , has thus been used to set a strong
general bound on the dark matter annihilation rate. However, Standard Model
radiative corrections to this process will inevitably produce photons which may
be easier to detect. We present an explicit calculation of the branching ratios
for the electroweak bremsstrahlung processes and
. These modes inevitably lead to electromagnetic
showers and further constraints on the DM annihilation cross-section. In
addition to annihilation, our calculations are also applicable to the case of
dark matter decay.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. New appendix with an extensive discussion of
