Evidence today suggests there is a skills gap among employable young adults. This study was based on a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program evaluation that was conducted in a rural school district in North Carolina. The study examined the perceptions of the program by CTE High School teachers, CTE Community College instructors, CTE local employers, and CTE program graduates. The focus was the overall functioning of the program and its ability to form students who are college and career ready through attainment of important future ready attributes. The study was conducted through a mixed methods approach. Data were collected from two instruments. First, quantitative data were collected by the completion of a survey. Next, qualitative data were collected from focus group interviews. Collecting the quantitative data first, and then further explaining the responses through qualitative data, formed an explanatory sequential design. Two important resources that were used to determine components of effectiveness included the 12 elements from the National Assessment of Career and Technical Education framework and the 17 attributes of a North Carolina future ready graduate. Together, these resources aligned with categories connected to college and career readiness. Data found that strengths of the district CTE program included academic and skill attainment, partnership opportunities, and workplace alignment. The greatest weakness involved fluent communication between the CTE groups

Female Victims\u27 Perceptions of Civil Protection Order Effectiveness in Rural Tennessee

Domestic violence is a serious social issue that affects victims across all spectrums of life. While domestic violence crosses all geographical boundaries, researchers have found that women residing in rural areas experience increased severity and more extended periods of abuse than their urban counterparts. Existing literature focusing on rural female domestic violence victims and their subjective perceptions of civil order protection is limited and little is known about abuse victims\u27 satisfaction with civil protection orders in keeping them safe from future incidents of violence. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the effectiveness perceptions of rural female victims of domestic violence regarding their civil protection experiences. A phenomenological analysis was used to uncover the meanings that 10 participants put on their civil protection order experience. The study was conducted using the advocacy coalition framework as the theoretical foundation. Data were inductively analyzed to identify common emergent themes among the participants. The research findings indicated that the majority of participants perceived civil protection orders as ineffective in discouraging future incidents of domestic violence. The findings also revealed that most participants viewed the protection orders as a necessary tool to combat domestic violence and expressed the need for improvements of civil protection orders. Positive social change may result through policymakers addressing issues of concerns related to effectiveness identified in the study, thereby helping reduce domestic violence-related incidents

Sustainable transportation : a case study of telework and carpool in Atlanta, Georgia

This study examined Atlanta, Georgia\u27s 13-county metropolitan area, a region currently plagued by traffic congestion and air pollution. Two alternative transportation options, namely telework and carpool, were evaluated in respect to their current status and future potential as a method to assist Atlanta in achieving a sustainable transportation system. A telework survey was conducted including 118 area commuters with access to telework programs, and a portion of the Atlanta Regional Commission\u27s Commute Connections\u27 carpool database was acquired in order to examine the pattern of telework and carpool participation, participants\u27 socio-economic and demographic characteristics, and telework and carpool\u27s significance in mitigating traffic congestion and air pollution. Furthermore, strategies to increase telework and carpool participation were explored. These data were examined using both spatial and statistical analyses, with results including geographic locations and typical socio-economic and demographic descriptions of teleworkers, non-teleworkers, and carpoolers. Teleworkers appeared to reside in a more dispersed pattern than non-teleworkers, while also living farther from their respective employers than their non-teleworking counterparts. Carpoolers reported residences in the immediate outskirts of downtown Atlanta as well as in its suburbs. Teleworkers were determined generally to be females earning incomes in excess of 60,000,whilenon−teleworkersweremostoftenmalesearning60,000, while non-teleworkers were most often males earning 30,000-$45,000 annually. Teleworkers also reported information-related job functions compatible with telework, as non-teleworkers cited job functions more focused on a central workplace. Carpooler characteristics gathered from literature resulted in a typical description of such V commuters as those with low incomes and low vehicle access. Carpoolers were also suspected to populate job functions more focused on a central workplace. The locations of teleworkers and carpoolers with such socio-economic and demographic descriptions were compared with appropriate census tract data to assess such data\u27s strength in determining regions of telework and carpool potential. The comparisons revealed that teleworkers were not residing in census tracts reporting high median incomes and large female populations. In contrast, carpoolers were residing in census tracts with low median incomes and low numbers of information and professional, scientific, and technical workers. Therefore, mapping census data served to be a more reliable method for identifying carpool potential than for identifying telework potential. In fact, this study suggests that job function may be more appropriate for detecting telework potential. Both telework and carpool were quantitatively characterized as significant to mitigating trafficrelated problems by decreasing vehicle miles traveled and the number of single occupancy vehicles on the highways. Finally, commuters\u27 comments collected in the telework survey were synthesized, resulting in suggested strategies to increase telework and carpool participation. These strategies include providing personal telework and/or carpool experience to the commuter, as well as marketing telework and carpool as avenues of saving money and time

Refining Statutory Interpretation: How Natural Gas Export Regulations Violate U.S. International Trade Obligations

    Get PDF
As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United States is required to abide by nondiscriminatory trade policies when exporting products to other WTO members. Current U.S. policy regulating natural gas exports impose burdensome and lengthy licensing procedures on those requesting approval of a permit to export natural gas to countries with which the U.S. does not have a free trade agreement. A similar commodity, crude oil, is regulated by different regulations that allow for U.S. oil producers to freely export crude oil overseas. This Comment analyzes the differences in federal laws and regulations governing the export of crude oil and natural gas in conjunction with the United States’ international trade obligations as a member of the WTO. This Comment argues that policies restricting United States’ natural gas exports violates U.S. trade obligations as a member of the WTO and are unlikely to qualify for an exemption from WTO international trade obligations. Finally, this Comment concludes that U.S. regulations and laws can be brought into compliance with international trade obligations through either a change in statutory interpretation by executive agencies or Congressional action

Are Hormone Therapies More Effective in Treating the Manifestations/ Symptoms of Menopause than Lifestyle, Exercise, and Diet Changes?

    Get PDF
For many women, menopause is a topic that is not discussed until they reach the age of 45 and begin to experience symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Because of the taboo associated with menstrual cycles and female reproductive health, many women suffer in silence and are not aware of the various treatment options that are available to aid with the subsidence of their symptoms. These various treatment options range from medications such as hormone-replacement therapies, vitamin and mineral supplements, and changes in diet and exercise. For this presentation, the research that was conducted focused on hormonal therapies and lifestyle changes. Through the background research that was completed, it was hypothesized that hormonal therapies provided patients with improved outcomes compared to lifestyle changes. Hormonal therapies can be used to treat a range of symptoms and conditions for women who are considered to be in menopause. Due to the decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone that are produced by the body, women may experience a worsening of symptoms as they age. Under the category of hormonal therapies, there are several options such as estrogen supplements, herbal oils, CBD oil, vitamin and mineral supplements, and various other medications that can be prescribed to treat specific side effects of menopause. Some women prefer to not take medications or consume hormones and opt to alter their lifestyle in order to improve their symptoms. Small changes such as increasing exercise, altering diet to exclude saturated fats and processed foods, and getting enough sleep can cause some women to experience an improvement of their symptoms. Other changes that may be helpful include eating smaller meals throughout the day instead of consuming 3 larger meals. Through a literature review of many reputable sources, it was concluded that hormonal therapies when compared to lifestyle changes decrease the symptoms which women who are in menopause may experience

Symbol Designs And Signal Words: Importance In Hazard Statements For Procedures

    Get PDF
PresentationSignal words and symbols are often used in hazard statements for procedures to convey safety information to workers. However, little is known about effective display methods for this domain. Two studies were performed, one with a focus on symbol design and another on signal words. For the symbol design, contents of the design (i.e., hazard, consequence, and mitigation) were manipulated to determine any effect on participants’ performance of the mitigation methods. For signal words, workers were asked their interpretation of caution, warning, and notes, which were then coded to determine three main themes of the results. Results indicate that the content of the symbol design had no impact on participants’ performance of the mitigation step and few workers had the correct definitions for the signal words caution and warning. These results suggest the time spent by procedure writer’s determining which signal word is appropriate and what information to provide in hazard symbols is not being spent well and should be used differently
