Guidelines for analysis and reporting of clinical trials in oncology.
When analyzing and reporting the results of clinical trials, investigators should follow a simple approach. The purpose of a trial is to estimate an effect or treatment difference, which if present would have clinical utility when treating new patients. Procedures or methods that do not facilitate precisely and impartially estimating and reporting the treatment effect are likely to mislead investigators. Most often in clinical trials, investigators are interested in estimates of risk ratios (specifically odds or hazard ratios) between the treatment groups or levels of a prognostic factor. These simple ideas suggest that the most useful results from clinical trials will be estimated risk ratios and their confidence limits. Especially in cancer, where disease progression, recurrence, and death are common events following treatment, estimates of risk difference are very relevant. Hypothesis tests and associated P-values, although often (or exclusively) reported, are of lesser utility because they do not fully summarize the data. These recommendations may be seen by some investigators to be contrary to accepted practice. It is true that they are somewhat contrary to common practice but their general acceptance is evident in many journals and presentations by clinical trial methodologists. Despite some disagreement among statisticians regarding the need for adjustment of analyses for imbalanced prognostic factors, it is helpful to see if treatment effects change after accounting for imbalances. When this occurs, it may be of clinical interest. Although we discourage analyses that exclude any patients who meet the eligibility criteria, some circumstances will require that this be done (e.g., when a patient refuses to participate after randomization). Investigators should report, and emphasize as primary, those analyses that include all eligible patients. It is our hope and belief that analysis and reporting of trial results along the guidelines suggested here will result in impartial and useful information for journal readers
Spin-Orbit Alignment of the TrES-4 Transiting Planetary System and Possible Additional Radial Velocity Variation
We report new radial velocities of the TrES-4 transiting planetary system,
including observations of a full transit, with the High Dispersion Spectrograph
of the Subaru 8.2m telescope. Modeling of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect
indicates that TrES-4b has closely aligned orbital and stellar spin axes, with
. The close spin-orbit alignment angle
of TrES-4b seems to argue against a migration history involving planet-planet
scattering or Kozai cycles, although there are two nearby faint stars that
could be binary companion candidates. Comparison of our out-of-transit data
from 4 different runs suggest that the star exhibits radial velocity
variability of 20 ms^-1 in excess of a single Keplerian orbit. Although
the cause of the excess radial velocity variability is unknown, we discuss
various possibilities including systematic measurement errors, starspots or
other intrinsic motions, and additional companions besides the transiting

Static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes from {\it ab initio} finite electric field calculations
{\it Ab initio} investigations of the full static dielectric response and
Born effective charge of BN nanotubes (BN-NTs) have been performed for the
first time using finite electric field method. It is found that the ionic
contribution to the static dielectric response of BN-NTs is substantial and
also that a pronounced chirality-dependent oscillation is superimposed on the
otherwise linear relation between the longitudinal electric polarizability and
the tube diameter (), as for a thin dielectric cylinderical shell. In
contrast, the transverse dielectric response of the BN-NTs resemble the
behavior of a thin (non-ideal) conducting cylindrical shell of a diameter of
\AA, with a screening factor of 2 for the inner electric field. The
medium principal component of the Born effective charge corresponding
to the transverse atomic displacement tangential to the BN-NT surface, has a
pronounced -dependence (but independent of chirality), while the large
longitudinal component exhibits a clear chirality dependence (but
nearly -independent), suggesting a powerful way to characterize the diameter
and chirality of a BN-NT.Comment: submitted to PR
Optical to Near-IR Spectrum of a Massive Evolved Galaxy at z = 1.26
We present the optical to near-infrared (IR) spectrum of the galaxy TSPS
J1329-0957, a red and bright member of the class of extremely red objects
(EROs) at z = 1.26. This galaxy was found in the course of the Tokyo-Stromlo
Photometry Survey (TSPS) which we are conducting in the southern sky. The
spectroscopic observations were carried out with the Gemini Multi-Object
Spectrograph (GMOS) and the Gemini Near Infra-Red Spectrograph (GNIRS) mounted
on the Gemini-South telescope. The wide wavelength coverage of 0.6 - 2.3 um
provides useful clues as to the nature of EROs while most published spectra are
limited to a narrower spectral range which is dictated by the need for
efficient redshift determination in a large survey. We compare our spectrum
with several optical composite spectra obtained in recent large surveys, and
with stellar population synthesis models. The effectiveness of using near-IR
broad-band data, instead of the spectral data, in deriving the galaxy
properties are also investigated. We find that TSPS J1329-0957 formed when the
universe was 2 - 3 Gyr old, and subsequently evolved passively to become one of
the most massive galaxies found in the z = 1 - 2 universe. Its early type and
estimated stellar mass of M* = 10^{11.5} Msun clearly point to this galaxy
being a direct ancestor of the brightest elliptical and spheroidal galaxies in

Quantum Phonon Optics: Coherent and Squeezed Atomic Displacements
In this paper we investigate coherent and squeezed quantum states of phonons.
The latter allow the possibility of modulating the quantum fluctuations of
atomic displacements below the zero-point quantum noise level of coherent
states. The expectation values and quantum fluctuations of both the atomic
displacement and the lattice amplitude operators are calculated in these
states---in some cases analytically. We also study the possibility of squeezing
quantum noise in the atomic displacement using a polariton-based approach.Comment: 6 pages, RevTe
Optical Spatial integration methods for ambiguity function generation
A coherent optical spatial integration approach to ambiguity function generation is described. It uses one dimensional acousto-optic Bragg cells as input tranducers in conjunction with a space variant linear phase shifter, a passive optical element, to generate the two dimensional ambiguity function in one exposure. Two-dimensional mapping of triaxial strain fields in a multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film using scanning x-ray microdiffraction
The dramatically enhanced polarizations and saturation magnetizations observed in the epitaxially constrained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films with their pronounced grain-orientation dependence have attracted much attention and are attributed largely to the constrained in-plane strain. Thus, it is highly desirable to directly obtain information on the two-dimensional (2D) distribution of the in-plane strain and its correlation with the grain orientation of each corresponding microregion. Here the authors report a 2D quantitative mapping of the grain orientation and the local triaxial strain field in a 250 nm thick multiferroic BFO film using a synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction technique. This direct scanning measurement demonstrates that the deviatoric component of the in-plane strain tensor is between 5x10(-3) and 6x10(-3) and that the local triaxial strain is fairly well correlated with the grain orientation in that particular region.
