Electrodeposition of ZnTe Compound Semiconductors from Aqueous Solution

    Get PDF
ZnTe compound semiconductors were synthesized in acidic aqueous solution using a pulsed current electrodeposition technique. The optimum condition to obtain ZnTe deposits was determined by the cathodic polarization curves measured at a wide potential range. During the co-deposition of Zn and Te, under potential deposition (UPD) of Zn was observed. Increasing the solution temperature up to 353 K, UPD of Zn was promoted by the formation of Zn(OH)2. Crystal phase, structure and chemical composition of electrodeposited ZnTe was controlled by the solution composition and electrolysis condition. The band gap energy of ZnTe films annealed at 573 K was close to 2.26 eV

Vestibular Compensation after Vestibular Dysfunction Induced by Arsanilic Acid in Mice

When vestibular function is lost, vestibular compensation works for the reacquisition of body balance. For the study of vestibular dysfunction and vestibular compensation, surgical or chemical labyrinthectomy has been performed in various animal species. In the present study, we performed chemical labyrinthectomy using arsanilic acid in mice and investigated the time course of vestibular compensation through behavioral observations and histological studies. The surgical procedures required only paracentesis and storage of 50 μL of p-arsanilic acid sodium salt solution in the tympanic cavity for 5 min. From behavioral observations, vestibular functions were worst at 2 days and recovered by 7 days after surgery. Spontaneous nystagmus appeared at 1 day after surgery with arsanilic acid and disappeared by 2 days. Histological studies revealed specific damage to the vestibular endorgans. In the ipsilateral spinal vestibular nucleus, the medial vestibular nucleus, and the contralateral prepositus hypoglossal nucleus, a substantial number of c-Fos-immunoreactive cells appeared by 1 day after surgery with arsanilic acid, with a maximum increase in number by 2 days and complete disappearance by 7 days. Taken together, these findings indicate that chemical labyrinthectomy with arsanilic acid and the subsequent observation of vestibular compensation is a useful strategy for elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying vestibular pathophysiologies

Negative feedback by IRE1β optimizes mucin production in goblet cells

    Get PDF
In mammals, the prototypical endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress sensor inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1) has diverged into two paralogs. IRE1α is broadly expressed and mediates the unconventional splicing of X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1) mRNA during ER stress. By contrast, IRE1β is expressed selectively in the digestive tract, and its function remains unclear. Here, we report that IRE1β plays a distinctive role in mucin-secreting goblet cells. In IRE1β-/- mice, aberrant mucin 2 (MUC2) accumulated in the ER of goblet cells, accompanied by ER distension and elevated ER stress signaling such as increased XBP1 mRNA splicing. In contrast, conditional IRE1α-/- mice showed no such ER distension but a marked decrease in spliced XBP1 mRNA. mRNA stability assay revealed that MUC2 mRNA was greatly stabilized in IRE1β-/- mice. These findings suggest that in goblet cells, IRE1β, but not IRE1α, promotes efficient protein folding and secretion in the ER by optimizing the level of mRNA encoding their major secretory product, MUC2

    Electrodeposition of Ferromagnetic Metal Nanowires

Ni-Fe alloy films and nanowires were fabricated using electrodeposition technique. The cylindrical shape of nanowires was precisely transferred from the nanochannels of membrane filters and the aspect ratio reached to around 60. Coercive force in in-plan direction of Ni-Fe alloy films decreased to ca. 1 Oe with increasing Fe content in deposits while, in perpendicular direction, the films were hardly magnetized. Magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the nanowires were spontaneously magnetized to the long axis direction and the coercive force reached to ca. 200 Oe.6th International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials - THERMEC\u272009; Berlin; 25 August 2009 through 29 August 2009; Code 7924

Spectral responses of GaAs photodiodes fabiricated by rapid thermal diffusion

    Get PDF
The spectral responses of GaAs photodiodes fabricated by rapid thermal diffusion (RTD) of Zn are presented. The authors tried controlling the p+-n junction depth by the heating rate of RTD, without extending the diffusion time. It is found that Zn diffuses from the surface to a deeper position as the heating rate increases. Consequently, the spectral response of photodiodes formed by RTD is strongly dependent on the heating rate of RTD. A large improvement in the short-wavelength response between 400 and 800 nm is observed as the heating rate decreases
