    Liposarcoma of stomach: report of a case

    A report is made on a case of liposarcoma of stomach in a 42 year old man. This is the first case of liposarcoma of stomach reported in Japan. The patient has remained asymptomatic for five years after operation.</p

    AbstractPCR random mutagenesis in the cysE gene encoding Escherichia coli serine acetyltransferase was employed to isolate the mutant enzymes that, due to a much less feedback inhibition by L-cysteine, cause overproduction of L-cysteine and L-cystine in the recombinant strains. The L-cysteine auxotrophic and non-utilizing E. coli strain was transformed with plasmids having the altered cysE genes. Then, several transformants overproducing L-cysteine were selected by detecting the halo formation of the L-cysteine auxotroph. The production test of amino acids and analysis of the catalytic property on the mutant enzymes suggest that the carboxy-terminal region of serine acetyltransferase plays an important role in the desensitization to feedback inhibition and the high level production of L-cysteine and L-cystine

    Effect of Configuration of Micro-/Nanoscale Structure on Sliding Surface on Molecular Gas-Film Lubrication

    Abstract. Nakamori et al. found experimentally that the friction between a partly polished diamond coating and a metal surface was drastically reduced to zero as relative speed increased to a few m/s [Diamond Relat. Mater. 14, (2005), 2122]. It seems that diamond coating took off the counter surface because sliding was noiseless in their experiment. However, the mechanism of this phenomenon was unknown. In the previous work, we performed the numerical simulation of micro-/nanoscale gas flow between two sliding surfaces, i. e., the slider surface with microscale surface roughness like partly polished diamond coating and the flat counter surface. And then, we successfully reproduced lift force large enough to suspend the slider used in the experiment and found that this effect became notable only for micro-/nanoscale gas flow. In the present paper, we investigate the effect of configuration of micro-/nanoscale structure on sliding surface on molecular gas-film lubrication. Since micro-/nanoscale gas flows between two sliding surfaces cannot be treated as a continuum, we use the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method

    Morphological Changes in Patient Lens Epithelial Cells after Intravitreal Silicone Oil Injection

    The subject patient (47-year-old male) had received silicone oil injection into the vitreous cavity of his left eye for the treatment of retinal detachment in 1986. Two months later, the silicone oil was removed from the vitreous cavity, as the retina was reattached. Soon after the operation, the lens of the eye gradually became opaque to mature cataract, and his left visual acuity had fallen to hand motion upon his present admission to the hospital. The lens epithelium obtained by anterior capsulotomy during the extracapsular cataract extraction was examined morphologically by transmission electron microscopy. Inside the anterior lens capsule, abnormal epithelial proliferation was observed. The epithelial cells changed their shapes from cuboidal to spindle, accompanied by new basal lamina-like substances around them. The spindle-shaped cells stretched like pseudopodia. The extracellular matrices were abundant and composed of collagen fibers. Fragments and dissolved materials of the fibers were also seen in some specimens. Lipid-like substances and myelin-like structures were often observed in the relatively well preserved cytoplasm. As a result, it is surmised that cataract formation after intravitreal silicone oil injection may be associated with fibrous pseudometaplasia of the lens epithelial cells and phagocytosed silicone oil deposits in the epithelial cells

    Surgical resection of mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm in the biliary system: a report of two cases

    Background Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MINEN) is a rare disease and there is scarce literature on its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. We encountered two unusual cases of MINEN in the biliary tract, one in the ampulla of Vater and the other in the distal bile duct. In this report, we describe the clinical course of these two cases in detail. Case presentation Case 1: A 69-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of epigastric pain. When endoscopic sphincterotomy and retrograde biliary drainage were performed for gallstone pancreatitis, an ulcerated lesion was found in the ampulla of the Vater. Based on the biopsy results, the lesion was diagnosed as the ampulla of Vater carcinoma and subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (SSPPD) was performed. Postoperative histopathological examination revealed the coexistence of adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma components, consistent with the diagnosis of MINEN. In addition, lymph node metastasis was found on the dorsal side of the pancreas and the metastatic component was adenocarcinoma. Adjuvant chemotherapy with etoposide and cisplatin was administered for 6 months, and presently the patient is alive without recurrence 64 months after surgery. Case 2: A 79-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of anorexia. Cholangiography showed severe stenosis of the distal bile duct. A biopsy was conducted from the stenotic lesion and it revealed the lesion to be adenocarcinoma. A diagnosis of distal bile duct carcinoma was made, and SSPPD was performed. Histopathological examination revealed the coexistence of adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma components, and the tumor was confirmed as MINEN of the distal bile duct. No adjuvant chemotherapy was administered due to the poor performance status. 7 months later, the patient was found to have a liver metastasis. Conclusion We experienced two valuable cases of biliary MINEN. To identify better treatments, it is important to consider the diversity of individual cases and to continue sharing a variety of cases with different presentations

    Nd-ion Substitution Effect on f-electron Multipole Order of PrRu4P12

    We studied the effect of magnetic Nd-ion substitution on the metal-nonmetal transition at a transition temperature of 63 K of PrRu4P12, which is characterized by antiferro-type electric multipole ordering of Pr-ion 4f electrons. The transition temperature of Pr1-xNdxRu4P12 depends weakly on the Nd concentration x as compared to Laand Ce-substituted compounds. Inelastic neutron-scattering measurements revealed that the energies and widths of crystalline field excitation peaks of Pr 4f 2 in Pr0.85Nd0.15Ru4P12 are very similar to those of PrRu4P12. These experimental results indicate that the ordered state is robust against the substitution of magnetic Nd ions as compared to the La and Ce substitutions. Magnetic interactions between the Pr ions and the Nd ions in Pr1-xNdxRu4P12 help stabilize the magnetic triplet ground state of the Pr ions that appears in the antiferro-type multipole ordered phase.
