Hot spots and waves in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 intrinsic Josephson junction stacks -a study by Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy
Recently, it has been shown that large stacks of intrinsic Josephson
junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 emit synchronous THz radiation, the synchronization
presumably triggered by a cavity resonance. To investigate this effect we use
Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy to image electric field
distributions. Apart from verifying the appearance of cavity modes at low bias
we find that, in a high input power regime, standing-wave patterns are created
through interactions with a hot spot, possibly pointing to a new mode of
generating synchronized radiation in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information include
Direct observation of quantized interlayer vortex flow and vortex pinning distribution in high-Tc La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 single crystals
A scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope
(SSM) is used to study the magnetic imaging of dynamic motion of quantized
interlayer vortices induced by the Lorentz force in anisotropic high-Tc
La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 single crystals. It is found that 3 modes of flux
motion switch depending on the transport current. By increasing the current a
transition from the creep-like behavior of vortices to a steady flow of
vortices was observed. Even higher current induced a continuous expansion of
vortex-flow area indicating an inhomogeneous distribution of various pinning
centers.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
A Cross-Whiskers Junction as a Novel Fabrication Process for Intrinsic Josephson Junction
A Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d cross-whiskers junction has been successfully discovered as
a novel intrinsic Josephson junction without using any technique for
micro-fabrication. Two Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d whisker crystals were placed crosswise
on a MgO substrate and heated at 850C for 30 min. They were electrically
connected at their c-planes. The measurement terminals were made at the four
ends of the whiskers. The I-V characteristics of the cross-whiskers junction at
5K were found to show a clear multiple-branch structure with a spacing of
approximately 15 mV that is a feature of the intrinsic Josephson junction. The
critical current density Jc was estimated to be 1170 A/cm2. The
branch-structure was strongly suppressed by the magnetic field above 1kOe.Comment: 4 pages, PDF fil
d-like Symmetry of the Order Parameter and Intrinsic Josephson Effects in Bi2212 Cross-Whisker Junctions
An intrinsic tunnel junction was made using two Bi-2212 single crystal
whiskers. The two whiskers with a cross-angle were overlaid at their c-planes
and connected by annealing. The angular dependence of the critical current
density along the c-axis is of the d-wave symmetry. However, the angular
dependence is much stronger than that of the conventional d-wave. Furthermore,
the current vs. voltage characteristics of the cross-whiskers junctions show a
multiple-branch structure at any cross-angle, indicating the formation of the
intrinsic Josephson junction array.Comment: 4 pages PDF fil
N-3 PUFAs induce inflammatory tolerance by formation of KEAP1-containing SQSTM1/p62-bodies and activation of NFE2L2
Inflammation is crucial in the defense against infections but must be tightly controlled to limit detrimental hyperactivation. Our diet influences inflammatory processes and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have known anti-inflammatory effects. The balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory processes is coordinated by macrophages and macroautophagy/autophagy has recently emerged as a cellular process that dampens inflammation. Here we report that the n-3 PUFA docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) transiently induces cytosolic speckles of the autophagic receptor SQSTM1/p62 (sequestosome 1) (described as SQSTM1/p62-bodies) in macrophages. We suggest that the formation of SQSTM1/p62-bodies represents a fast mechanism of NFE2L2/Nrf2 (nuclear factor, erythroid 2 like 2) activation by recruitment of KEAP1 (kelch like ECH associated protein 1). Further, the autophagy receptor TAX1BP1 (Tax1 binding protein 1) and ubiquitin-editing enzyme TNFAIP3/A20 (TNF α induced protein 3) could be identified in DHA-induced SQSTM1/p62-bodies. Simultaneously, DHA strongly dampened the induction of pro-inflammatory genes including CXCL10 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10) and we suggest that formation of SQSTM1/p62-bodies and activation of NFE2L2 leads to tolerance towards selective inflammatory stimuli. Finally, reduced CXCL10 levels were related to the improved clinical outcome in n-3 PUFA-supplemented heart-transplant patients and we propose CXCL10 as a robust marker for the clinical benefits mobilized by n-3 PUFA supplementation
Observation of Hadronic W Decays in t-tbar Events with the Collider Detector at Fermilab
We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using
a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass
distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with
the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure
the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the
presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet
channel.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in W-boson decays produced in p-pbar collisions
We describe a measurement of the charge asymmetry of leptons from W boson
decays in the rapidity range 0 enu, munu events from
110+/-7 pb^{-1}of data collected by the CDF detector during 1992-95. The
asymmetry data constrain the ratio of d and u quark momentum distributions in
the proton over the x range of 0.006 to 0.34 at Q2 \approx M_W^2. The asymmetry
predictions that use parton distribution functions obtained from previously
published CDF data in the central rapidity region (0.0<|y_l|<1.1) do not agree
with the new data in the large rapidity region (|y_l|>1.1).Comment: 13 pages, 3 tables, 1 figur
Search for Narrow Diphoton Resonances and for gamma-gamma+W/Z Signatures in p\bar p Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV
We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both
inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100
pb^{-1} of p\bar p collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on
the product of cross section times branching ratio for both p\bar
p\to\gamma\gamma + X and p\bar p\to\gamma\gamma + W/Z. Comparing the inclusive
production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the
supersymmetry-breaking scale sqrt{F} in the TeV range, depending on the
sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO
prediction for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson,
we set an upper limit on the branching ratio for H\to\gamma\gamma. Finally, we
set a lower limit on the mass of a `bosophilic' Higgs boson (e.g. one which
couples only to \gamma, W, and Z$ bosons with standard model couplings) of 82
GeV/c^2 at 95% confidence level.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure
