Observations of HONO by laser-induced fluorescence at the South Pole during ANTCI 2003
Observations of nitrous acid (HONO) by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) at the South Pole taken during the Antarctic Troposphere Chemistry Investigation (ANTCI), which took place over the time period of Nov. 15, 2003 to Jan. 4, 2004, are presented here. The median observed mixing ratio of HONO 10 m above the snow was 5.8 pptv (mean value 6.3 pptv) with a maximum of 18.2 pptv on Nov 30th, Dec 1st, 3rd, 15th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 28th. The measurement uncertainty is ±35%. The LIF HONO observations are compared to concurrent HONO observations performed by mist chamber/ion chromatography (MC/IC). The HONO levels reported by MC/IC are about 7.2 ± 2.3 times higher than those reported by LIF. Citation: Liao, W., A. T. Case, J. Mastromarino, D. Tan, and J. E. Comparative analysis of rigidity across protein families
We present a comparative study in which 'pebble game' rigidity analysis is applied to multiple protein crystal structures, for each of six different protein families. We find that the main-chain rigidity of a protein structure at a given hydrogen bond energy cutoff is quite sensitive to small structural variations, and conclude that the hydrogen bond constraints in rigidity analysis should be chosen so as to form and test specific hypotheses about the rigidity of a particular protein. Our comparative approach highlights two different characteristic patterns ('sudden' or 'gradual') for protein rigidity loss as constraints are removed, in line with recent results on the rigidity transitions of glassy networks
Stochastic evolution of four species in cyclic competition
We study the stochastic evolution of four species in cyclic competition in a
well mixed environment. In systems composed of a finite number of particles
these simple interaction rules result in a rich variety of extinction
scenarios, from single species domination to coexistence between
non-interacting species. Using exact results and numerical simulations we
discuss the temporal evolution of the system for different values of , for
different values of the reaction rates, as well as for different initial
conditions. As expected, the stochastic evolution is found to closely follow
the mean-field result for large , with notable deviations appearing in
proximity of extinction events. Different ways of characterizing and predicting

Experimental characterization of railgun-driven supersonic plasma jets motivated by high energy density physics applications
We report experimental results on the parameters, structure, and evolution of
high-Mach-number (M) argon plasma jets formed and launched by a
pulsed-power-driven railgun. The nominal initial average jet parameters in the
data set analyzed are density \approx 2 x 10^(16) cm^(-3), electron temperature
\approx 1.4 eV, velocity \approx 30 km/s, M \approx 14, ionization fraction
\approx 0.96, diameter \approx 5 cm, and length \approx 20 cm. These values
approach the range needed by the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX), which is
designed to use merging plasma jets to form imploding spherical plasma liners
that can reach peak pressures of 0.1-1 Mbar at stagnation. As these jets
propagate a distance of approximately 40 cm, the average density drops by one
order of magnitude, which is at the very low end of the 8-160 times drop

Millimeter Wave Detection of Localized Anomalies in the Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank Insulating Foam
The Space Shuttle Columbia's catastrophic accident emphasizes the growing need for developing and applying effective, robust and life-cycle oriented nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for inspecting the shuttle external fuel tank spray on foam insulation (SOFI). Millimeter wave NDT techniques were one of the methods chosen for evaluating their potential for inspecting these structures. Several panels with embedded anomalies (mainly voids) were produced and tested for this purpose. Near-field and far-field millimeter wave NDT methods were used for producing images of the anomalies in these panels. This paper presents the results of an investigation for the purpose of detecting localized anomalies in several SOFI panels. To this end, reflectometers at a relatively wide range of frequencies (Ka-band (26.5 - 40 GHz) to W-band (75 - 110 GHz)) and utilizing different types of radiators were employed. The resulting raw images revealed a significant amount of information about the interior of these panels. However, using simple image processing techniques the results were improved in particular as it relate s to detecting the smaller anomalies. Darboux Transformations, Infinitesimal Symmetries and Conservation Laws for Nonlocal Two-Dimensional Toda Lattice
The technique of Darboux transformation is applied to nonlocal partner of
two-dimensional periodic A_{n-1} Toda lattice. This system is shown to admit a
representation as the compatibility conditions of direct and dual
overdetermined linear systems with quantized spectral parameter. The
generalization of the Darboux transformation technique on linear equations of
such a kind is given. The connections between the solutions of overdetermined
linear systems and their expansions in series at singular points neighborhood
are presented. The solutions of the nonlocal Toda lattice and infinite

Scattering theory with finite-gap backgrounds: Transformation operators and characteristic properties of scattering data
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators (doubly
infinite second order difference operators) with steplike coefficients which
are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on
different sides. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering
data in the case of perturbations with finite second (or higher) moment.Comment: 23 page
Unitarized pion-nucleon scattering within Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
By means of the Inverse Amplitude Method we unitarize the elastic
pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained from Heavy Baryon Chiral
Perturbation Theory to O(q^3). Within this approach we can enlarge their
applicability range and generate the Delta(1232) resonance. We can find a
reasonable description of the pion nucleon phase shifts with (q^2) parameters
in agreement with the resonance saturation hypothesis. However, the
uncertainties in the analysis of the low energy data as well as the large
number of chiral parameters, which can have strong correlations, allow us to

Recent Upgrades to NASA SPoRT Initialization Datasets for the Environmental Modeling System
The NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center has developed several products for its NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS) partners that can initialize specific fields for local model runs within the NOAA/NWS Science and Training Resource Center Environmental Modeling System (EMS). The suite of SPoRT products for use in the EMS consists of a Sea Surface Temperature (SST) composite that includes a Lake Surface Temperature (LST) analysis over the Great Lakes, a Great Lakes sea-ice extent within the SST composite, a real-time Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF) composite, and NASA Land Information System (LIS) gridded output.
