Broadband, unpolarized repumping and clearout light sources for Sr+^+ single-ion clocks

Future transportable optical clocks require compact and reliable light sources. Here, broadband, unpolarized repumper and state clearout sources for Sr+ single-ion optical clocks are reported. These turn-key devices require no frequency stabilization nor external modulators. They are fiber based, inexpensive, and compact. Key characteristics for clock operation are presented, including optical spectra, induced light shifts and required extinction ratios. Tests with an operating single-ion standard show a clearout efficiency of 100%. Compared to a laser-based repumper, the achievable fluorescence rates for ion detection are a few tens of per cent lower. The resulting ion kinetic temperature is 1--1.5 mK, near the Doppler limit of the ion system. Similar repumper light sources could be made for Ca+ (866 nm) and Ba+ (650 nm) using semiconductor gain media.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Interface Equations for Capillary Rise in Random Environment

    Get PDF
We consider the influence of quenched noise upon interface dynamics in 2D and 3D capillary rise with rough walls by using phase-field approach, where the local conservation of mass in the bulk is explicitly included. In the 2D case the disorder is assumed to be in the effective mobility coefficient, while in the 3D case we explicitly consider the influence of locally fluctuating geometry along a solid wall using a generalized curvilinear coordinate transformation. To obtain the equations of motion for meniscus and contact lines, we develop a systematic projection formalism which allows inclusion of disorder. Using this formalism, we derive linearized equations of motion for the meniscus and contact line variables, which become local in the Fourier space representation. These dispersion relations contain effective noise that is linearly proportional to the velocity. The deterministic parts of our dispersion relations agree with results obtained from other similar studies in the proper limits. However, the forms of the noise terms derived here are quantitatively different from the other studies

Crucial but Understudied: Incentives in HIV Research

In this issue of The Lancet HIV, Katherine Kranzer and colleagues report that economic incentives for caregivers in Zimbabwe increased uptake of HIV testing and counselling by children aged 8–17 years compared with caregivers with no financial incentive. HIV testing of groups that are hard to reach is a formidable challenge worldwide, and innovative strategies to reach adolescents in particular are crucial to reaching UNAIDS’ 90-90-90 goal

Dynamics and Kinetic Roughening of Interfaces in Two-Dimensional Forced Wetting

We consider the dynamics and kinetic roughening of wetting fronts in the case of forced wetting driven by a constant mass flux into a 2D disordered medium. We employ a coarse-grained phase field model with local conservation of density, which has been developed earlier for spontaneous imbibition driven by a capillary forces. The forced flow creates interfaces that propagate at a constant average velocity. We first derive a linearized equation of motion for the interface fluctuations using projection methods. From this we extract a time-independent crossover length ÎŸĂ—\xi_\times, which separates two regimes of dissipative behavior and governs the kinetic roughening of the interfaces by giving an upper cutoff for the extent of the fluctuations. By numerically integrating the phase field model, we find that the interfaces are superrough with a roughness exponent of χ=1.35±0.05\chi = 1.35 \pm 0.05, a growth exponent of ÎČ=0.50±0.02\beta = 0.50 \pm 0.02, and ÎŸĂ—âˆŒv−1/2\xi_\times \sim v^{-1/2} as a function of the velocity. These results are in good agreement with recent experiments on Hele-Shaw cells. We also make a direct numerical comparison between the solutions of the full phase field model and the corresponding linearized interface equation. Good agreement is found in spatial correlations, while the temporal correlations in the two models are somewhat different.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Eur.Phys.J.

A Note in the Skyrme Model with Higher Derivative Terms

Another stabilizer term is used in the classical Hamiltonian of the Skyrme Model that permits in a much simple way the generalization of the higher-order terms in the pion derivative field. Improved numerical results are obtained.Comment: Latex. Figure not include; available upon request. 7 pages, report

    Noncyclic covers of knot complements

Hempel has shown that the fundamental groups of knot complements are residually finite. This implies that every nontrivial knot must have a finite-sheeted, noncyclic cover. We give an explicit bound, Ί(c)\Phi (c), such that if KK is a nontrivial knot in the three-sphere with a diagram with cc crossings and a particularly simple JSJ decomposition then the complement of KK has a finite-sheeted, noncyclic cover with at most Ί(c)\Phi (c) sheets.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, from Ph.D. thesis at Columbia University; Acknowledgments added; Content correcte

Electron Beam Induced Current Studies of Defect Induced Conductivity Inversion

    Get PDF
Defect induced inversion of conductivity type was studied both at the surface and at a network of interfacially confined misfit dislocations in heteroepitaxial Si(Ge) on Si structures. The inversion was achieved by controlled contamination with Au and Ni metallic impurities introduced by diffusion from backside evaporated layers. A theoretical explanation of the defect electrical activity and the inversion effect is presented, along with temperature dependent beam induced current observations
