    According to Rosmini duty precedes right. Without duty preceding right it would be impossible to form a concept or idea of right. As stated by Rosmini, the concept of right is encapsulated within the idea of duty. Each right thus has a duty that counters it. If a human being loves his fellow man, he will fulfill his obligations towards that person. By carrying out the command of love, a person will not be able to wrong his fellow man. On the grounds hereof the decree of love and social beneficence underwrite, in the context of Rosmini all rights and duties, that of the State and of the individual. With regard to Thomas Aquinas, the rights and duties of the individual would be neglected, while that of the State, under the guise of Salus reipublicae supreme lex, would be stressed. The latter pave the way for human rights infringements, that is in contradistinction with the South African (Bill of Rights) Constitution and the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments of the American Constitution

The result of such an exchange of ideas causes the church magesterium to oppose every threat to human life from the moment of conception. The threat to human life is most intense at the point where life begins — at that stage where it is at its most defenceless. It is, for example, pre-natal. It is at this moment when humans are totally dependent on the goodwill and care of others. The church magesterium attempts to have an awareness of a “culture of life” take hold in civil society. By having created the human soul, God clothed humans in godliness. Human life, therefore, has a sacred and inviolable quality. The inviolate quality of human life is guaranteed by the Constitution of South Africa. It guarantees the equality of all in law, also that of the foetus. Should there be any violation of this right, it would have far-reaching implications for political civil society. Humankind is obliged to respect life. It expresses humankind’s relationship to fellow-man: and it is valid from the first moment of conception through to adulthood. The foetus also is a fellow human being and his or her rights should be respected just as the case would be with every other human being

    Calculation of thermal parameters of SiGe microbolometers

    The thermal parameters of a SiGe microbolometer were calculated using numerical modeling. The calculated thermal conduction and thermal response time are in good agreement with the values found experimentally and range between 2x10−7^-7 and 7x10−8^-8 W/K and 1.5 and 4.5 ms, respectively. High sensitivity of microbolometer is achieved due to optimization of the thermal response time and thermal conduction by fitting the geometry of supporting heat-removing legs or by selection of a suitable material providing boundary thermal resistance higher than 8x10−3^-3 cm2^2K/W at the SiGe interface.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Behavior of bulk high-temperature superconductors of finite thickness subjected to crossed magnetic fields

    Crossed magnetic field effects on bulk high-temperature superconductors have been studied both experimentally and numerically. The sample geometry investigated involves finite-size effects along both (crossed) magnetic field directions. The experiments were carried out on bulk melt-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) single domains that had been pre-magnetized with the applied field parallel to their shortest direction (i.e. the c-axis) and then subjected to several cycles of the application of a transverse magnetic field parallel to the sample ab plane. The magnetic properties were measured using orthogonal pick-up coils, a Hall probe placed against the sample surface and Magneto-Optical Imaging (MOI). We show that all principal features of the experimental data can be reproduced qualitatively using a two-dimensional finite-element numerical model based on an E-J power law and in which the current density flows perpendicularly to the plane within which the two components of magnetic field are varied. The results of this study suggest that the suppression of the magnetic moment under the action of a transverse field can be predicted successfully by ignoring the existence of flux-free configurations or flux-cutting effects. These investigations show that the observed decay in magnetization results from the intricate modification of current distribution within the sample cross-section. It is also shown that the model does not predict any saturation of the magnetic induction, even after a large number (~ 100) of transverse field cycles.     On the nature of the ultraluminous X-ray transient in Cen~A (NGC 5128)

    We combine 9 ROSAT, 9 Chandra, and 2 XMM-Newton observations of the Cen~A galaxy to obtain the X-ray light curve of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 (=CXOU J132519.9−-430317) spanning 1990 to 2003. The source reached a peak 0.1-2.4 keV flux F_X>10^{-12} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} during a 10~day span in 1995 July. The inferred peak isotropic luminosity of the source therefore exceeded 3 10^{39} ergs s^{-1}, which places the source in the class of ultra-luminous X-ray sources. Coherent pulsations at 13.264 Hz are detected during a second bright episode (F_X >3 times 10^{-13} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}) in 1999 December. The source is detected and varies significantly within three additional observations but is below the detection threshold in 7 observations. The X-ray spectrum in 1999 December is best described as a cut-off power law or a disk-blackbody (multi-colored disk). We also detect an optical source, m_F555W ~ 24.1 mag, within the Chandra error circle of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 in HST images taken 195~days before the nearest X-ray observation. The optical brightness of this source is consistent with a late O or early B star at the distance of Cen A. If the optical source is the counterpart, then the X-ray and optical behavior of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 are similar to the transient Be/X-ray pulsar A 0538-66.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures.     A level playing ‘field’? A Bourdieusian analysis of the career aspirations of further education students on sports courses

    There is currently a distinct dearth of research into how sports students’ career aspirations are formed during their post-compulsory education. This article, based on an ethnographic study of sport students in tertiary education, draws on data collected from two first-year cohorts (n = 34) on two different courses at a further education college in England. The study draws on ethnographic observations, and semi-structured group interviews, to examine in-depth the contrasting occupational perspectives emergent within these two groups of mainly working-class students, and how specific cultural practices affect students’ career aspirations. Utilising a Bourdieusian framework, the paper analyses the internalised, often latent cultural practices that impact upon these students’ diverse career aspirations. The hitherto under-researched dimension of inter-habitus interaction and also the application of doxa are outlined. The article reveals how the two student cohorts are situated within a complex field of relations, where struggles for legitimisation, academic accomplishment and numerous forms of lucrative capital become habituated. The study offers salient Bourdieusian-inspired insights into the career aspirations of these predominantly working-class students and the ways in which certain educational practices contribute to the production and reproduction of class inequalities

    Atomic data for neutron-capture elements III. Charge transfer rate coefficients for low-charge ions of Ge, Se, Br, Kr, Rb, and Xe

    We present total and final-state resolved charge transfer (CT) rate coefficients for low-charge Ge, Se, Br, Kr, Rb, and Xe ions reacting with neutral hydrogen over the temperature range 10^2--10^6 K. Each of these elements has been detected in ionized astrophysical nebulae, particularly planetary nebulae. CT rate coefficients are a key ingredient for the ionization equilibrium solutions needed to determine total elemental abundances from those of the observed ions. A multi-channel Landau Zener approach was used to compute rate coefficients for projectile ions with charges q=2-5, and for singly-charged ions the Demkov approximation was utilized. Our results for five-times ionized species are lower limits, due to the incompleteness of level energies in the NIST database. In addition, we computed rate coefficients for charge transfer ionization reactions between the neutral species of the above six elements and ionized hydrogen. The resulting total and state-resolved CT rate coefficients are tabulated and available at the CDS. In tandem with our concurrent investigations of other important atomic processes in photoionized nebulae, this work will enable robust investigations of neutron-capture element abundances and nucleosynthesis via nebular spectroscopy.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Prozone Masks Elevated Sars-Cov-2 Antibody Level Measurements

    We report a prozone effect in measurement of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody levels from an antibody surveillance program. Briefly, the prozone effect occurs in immunoassays when excessively high antibody concentration disrupts the immune complex formation, resulting in a spuriously low reported result. Following participant inquiries, we observed anomalously low measurement of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody levels using the Roche ElecsysÂź Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S immunoassay from participants in the Texas Coronavirus Antibody Research survey (Texas CARES), an ongoing prospective, longitudinal antibody surveillance program. In July, 2022, samples were collected from ten participants with anomalously low results for serial dilution studies, and a prozone effect was confirmed. From October, 2022 to March, 2023, serial dilution of samples detected 74 additional cases of prozone out of 1,720 participants\u27 samples. Prozone effect may affect clinical management of at-risk populations repeatedly exposed to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein through multiple immunizations or serial infections, making awareness and mitigation of this issue paramount

    Low temperature acoustic properties of amorphous silica and the Tunneling Model

    Internal friction and speed of sound of a-SiO(2) was measured above 6 mK using a torsional oscillator at 90 kHz, controlling for thermal decoupling, non-linear effects, and clamping losses. Strain amplitudes e(A) = 10^{-8} mark the transition between the linear and non-linear regime. In the linear regime, excellent agreement with the Tunneling Model was observed for both the internal friction and speed of sound, with a cut-off energy of E(min) = 6.6 mK. In the non-linear regime, two different behaviors were observed. Above 10 mK the behavior was typical for non-linear harmonic oscillators, while below 10 mK a different behavior was found.     Modeling the Radio and X-ray Emission of SN 1993J and SN 2002ap

    Modeling of radio and X-ray observations of supernovae interacting with their circumstellar media are discussed, with special application to SN 1993J and SN 2002ap. We emphasize the importance of including all relevant physical mechanisms, especially for the modeling of the radio light curves. The different conclusions for the absorption mechanism (free-free or synchrotron self-absorption), as well as departures from an ρ∝r−2\rho \propto r^{-2} CSM, as inferred by some authors, are discussed in detail. We conclude that the evidence for a variation in the mass loss rate with time is very weak. The results regarding the efficiencies of magnetic field generation and relativistic particle acceleration are summarized.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Uses svmult.cls.
