A computer module used to calculate the horizontal control surface size of a conceptual aircraft design

The creation of a computer module used to calculate the size of the horizontal control surfaces of a conceptual aircraft design is discussed. The control surface size is determined by first calculating the size needed to rotate the aircraft during takeoff, and, second, by determining if the calculated size is large enough to maintain stability of the aircraft throughout any specified mission. The tail size needed to rotate during takeoff is calculated from a summation of forces about the main landing gear of the aircraft. The stability of the aircraft is determined from a summation of forces about the center of gravity during different phases of the aircraft's flight. Included in the horizontal control surface analysis are: downwash effects on an aft tail, upwash effects on a forward canard, and effects due to flight in close proximity to the ground. Comparisons of production aircraft with numerical models show good accuracy for control surface sizing. A modified canard design verified the accuracy of the module for canard configurations. Added to this stability and control module is a subroutine that determines one of the three design variables, for a stable vectored thrust aircraft. These include forward thrust nozzle position, aft thrust nozzle angle, and forward thrust split

Phishing for Computer Fraud Insurance Coverage

Accordingly, the following note discusses the disparity between the federal circuit courts regarding the proper insurance coverage for phishing-type attacks. Part I examines the cyber threats companies face when handling sensitive transactions and customer data, as well as the coverage gap between traditional crime insurance policies and the targeted cyber insurance policies that help prevent, detect, and ultimately mitigate the damages resulting from a cybersecurity breach. Part II analyzes the current circuit split and the various contract interpretation strategies, policy considerations, and tests employed in reaching a coverage decision. Part III proposes a resolution to the overarching circuit split that will provide more clarity and predictability to victims of phishing attacks and the insurance companies they emplo

The Design and Synthesis of Chiral and Achiral Inclusion Compounds

An overview of inclusion phenomena, both in the solid state and in solution, is given. Following this orientating survey, a study of the systematic modification of some selected hexahosts is described. The versatile hexahost hexakis(benzyl-thiomethyl)benzene was chosen for detailed study. Substitution of each of the six outer aromatic rings was found to give a series of hosts with wide-ranging inclusion behaviour and differing guest selectivities. General inclusion properties have also been established for hexakis(2-phenylethylthiomethyl)-benzene, the first hexahost possessing a four atom inter-ring chain. An X-ray analysis of the 1,4-dioxan adduct of hexakis-(benzylthiomethyl)benzene has revealed a true clathrate structure for this material

Chiral Symmetry and Hyperfine Quark-Antiquark Splittings

We briefly review theoretical calculations for the pseudoscalar-vector meson hyperfine splitting with no open flavor and also report a many body field theoretical effort to assess the impact of chiral symmetry in the choice of effective potentials for relativistic quark models. Our calculations predict the missing eta_b meson to have mass near 9400 MeVMeV. The radial excitation ηc(2S)\eta_c(2S) is in agreement with the measurements of the BELLE and most recently BABAR collaborations.Comment: European HEP conference proceedings (Aachen, July 2003). Towards an Understanding of the New Charm and Charm-Strange Mesons

The observation of the D_{sJ}^*(2317), D_{sJ}(2460), and SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) states with properties differing considerably from what was expected has led to a renewed interest in hadron spectroscopy. In addition to these states, non-strange partners of the D_{sJ} states have also been observed. Understanding the D_0^* and D_1' states can provide important insights into the D_{sJ} states. In this contribution I examine quark model predictions for the D_0^* and D_1' states and discuss experimental measurements that can shed light on them. I find that these states are well described as the broad, j=1/2 non-strange charmed P-wave mesons. In the latter part of this writeup I discuss the c bar{s} possibilities for the SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) and measurements that can shed light on it.Comment: Talk presented at the 1st Meeting of the APS Topical Group on Hadronic Physics (Fermilab, Oct 24-26, 2004). 4 pages uses jpcon

The Act primarily functions to increase the penalty for drivers who cause death or serious bodily injury as a result of a vehicular accident and then flee the scene. Also known as C.J.’s Law, the Act establishes a maximum prison sentence of ten years for such a hit-and-run violation. In addition, the Act rewords and clarifies existing statutory language regarding license suspensions subsequent to reckless driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Poly(acrylic acid) interpolymer complexation: use of a fluorescence time resolved anisotropy as a poly(acrylamide) probe

    Get PDF
YesA low concentration poly(acrylamide) sensor has been developed which uses the segmental mobility of another polymer probe with a covalently attached fluorescent marker. Interpolymer complexation with poly(acrylic acid) leads to reduced segmental mobility which can be used to determine the concentration of polymer in solution. This technique could be useful in detecting the runoff of polymer dispersants and flocculants in fresh water supplies following water purification processes.Funding for the research was kindly provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
