    'I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre' (Psalm 49:4): How 'lyrical' is Hebrew psalmody?

    This paper discusses biblical poetry in relation to the ancient Greek-Latin tradition of lyric poetry. Since the Greek word »lyric« and the Hebrew word »psalterion« each have musical connotations, there must be some connection between biblical psalmody and lyric poetry. Indeed, the liturgical superscriptions of many psalms and the numerous hints to musical instruments and singing within them suggest that many texts were originally used for accompaniment to music and so could be seen as ›lyric poetry‹ in the strictest sense. There are, of course, key differences between ancient and biblical lyric poetry. Hebrew poems are formally marked not so much by metre or rhyme as by more general conventions of sonority and word-play, perhaps to facilitate memorisation. Furthermore, Hebrew poetry is particularly recognizable by its balanced expression of thought, a ›parallelism‹ which includes repeated or contrasting ideas and figurative language. This feature is also evident in some Hebrew prose: this ›blurring of the boundaries‹ between prose and poetry is another feature which distinguishes biblical poetry from ancient Greek or Latin lyric poetry. One other distinctive feature of psalmody is that, although rooted in the liturgy of the first Temple (950–587 BCE), and developing in the liturgy of the second Temple period, it continued to thrive even after the fall of the Temple in 70 CE. The liturgical use of the psalms resulted in its continual prominence throughout Jewish and Christian history; and because the essence of Hebrew poetry is more dependent on sense than sound this has also enabled a rich tradition of translation. So Hebrew psalmody is ›re-invented‹ through the several Greek, Latin, and Aramaic versions, as well as through the many languages of the early modern period, right up to the contemporary vernacular. In this sense psalmody is unusual: unlike ancient classical poetry it provides an ongoing and living tradition for a community of faith

    Reception history, biblical studies and the issue of multivalency

    “Reception History” is a relatively new method in biblical studies, although author argues that people have been doing this, without giving it this name, for centuries. Basically it is an approach which is interested in the “afterlife” of a biblical text, discovering a plethora of readings by looking at the use of a text not only through the more traditional commentary and later translations, but also through its various representations in liturgy, music, art, poetry, drama and film. Given that the use of biblical texts in liturgy was beginning to develop at the same time as the different canons of Scripture were being formed, liturgical reception history is a very ancient phenomenon. Similarly, given that biblical texts - especially the Gospels and Psalter - were illuminated in manuscripts well over a millennium ago, art reception history as visual exegesis has some very early antecedents.peer-reviewe

    Older Adults With Hearing Loss Have Reductions in Visual, Motor and Attentional Functioning

    Evidence from epidemiological, laboratory and clinical research suggests a link between age-related auditory declines and domain-general cognitive declines. Nevertheless, few studies have experimentally compared measures of non-auditory cognitive functions in younger normal hearing adults (YN), older adults with typical hearing thresholds for their age (ONHA) and older adults with clinically significant threshold hearing loss (OHL). The current study investigated the differences between these groups on measures of attentional response selection and execution to visual stimuli. A visual reaction time (RT) paradigm involving four tasks with differing and hierarchical attentional demands was administered. RTs on trials with differing foreperiods (FPs; pre-stimulus waiting times) were analyzed to assess context-related slowing, error commission and related cognitive control and strategic and automatic neural preparatory processes. The OHL group demonstrated a general slowing that was most apparent on the simplest tasks. Although the number of errors was similar when comparing all three groups, the OHL group exhibited less control over recovery from an error compared to the younger and ONHA groups. Unlike the YN and ONHA groups, the OHL group also showed difficulties with both strategic and automatic response preparation, although automatic preparation was more affected across all tasks. This pattern of results suggests that in older adults with hearing loss there is an underlying difficulty in automatic temporal processing that can affect higher order cognitive functions, although there may not be a completely generalized decline in cognitive functioning that is associated with hearing loss

    Multiple Effects of Prefrontal Lesions on Task-Switching

    This study examined the performance of 41 patients with focal prefrontal cortical lesions and 38 healthy controls on a task-switching procedure. Three different conditions were evaluated: single tasks without switches and two switching tasks with the currently relevant task signalled either 1500 ms (Long Cue) or 200 ms (Short Cue) before the stimulus. Patients with Superior Medial lesions showed both a general slowing of reaction time (RT) and a significantly increased switch cost as measured by RT. No other prefrontal group showed this increased reaction time switch cost. Increased error rates in the switching conditions, on the other hand, were observed in patients with Inferior Medial lesions and, to a lesser extent, ones with Superior Medial lesions. Patients with left dorsolateral lesions (9/46v) showed slower learning of the task as indicated by a high error rate early on. Several different processes are involved in task-switching and these are selectively disrupted by lesions to specific areas of the frontal lobes

    The Golgin GMAP210/TRIP11 Anchors IFT20 to the Golgi Complex

    Eukaryotic cells often use proteins localized to the ciliary membrane to monitor the extracellular environment. The mechanism by which proteins are sorted, specifically to this subdomain of the plasma membrane, is almost completely unknown. Previously, we showed that the IFT20 subunit of the intraflagellar transport particle is localized to the Golgi complex, in addition to the cilium and centrosome, and hypothesized that the Golgi pool of IFT20 plays a role in sorting proteins to the ciliary membrane. Here, we show that IFT20 is anchored to the Golgi complex by the golgin protein GMAP210/Trip11. Mice lacking GMAP210 die at birth with a pleiotropic phenotype that includes growth restriction, ventricular septal defects of the heart, omphalocele, and lung hypoplasia. Cells lacking GMAP210 have normal Golgi structure, but IFT20 is no longer localized to this organelle. GMAP210 is not absolutely required for ciliary assembly, but cilia on GMAP210 mutant cells are shorter than normal and have reduced amounts of the membrane protein polycystin-2 localized to them. This work suggests that GMAP210 and IFT20 function together at the Golgi in the sorting or transport of proteins destined for the ciliary membrane

    Total Daily Energy Expenditure Has Declined over the Past Three Decades Due to Declining Basal Expenditure, Not Reduced Activity Expenditure

    Obesity is caused by prolonged positive energy balance1,2. Whether reduced energy expenditure stemming from reduced activity levels contributes, is debated3,4. Here we used the IAEA DLW database on energy expenditure of adults in the USA and Europe (n = 4799) to explore patterns in total (TEE: n=4799), basal (BEE: n = 1432) and physical activity energy expenditure (AEE: n = 1432) over time. In both sexes total energy expenditure (TEE) adjusted for body composition and age declined with time, while adjusted AEE increased over time. In males adjusted BEE decreased significantly, but in females this didn’t reach significance. A larger dataset of basal metabolic rate (BMR equivalent to BEE) measurements of 9912 adults across 163 studies spanning 100 years replicated the decline in BEE in both sexes. Increasing obesity in the USA/Europe has probably not been fueled by reduced physical activity leading to lowered TEE. We identify here decline in adjusted BEE, as a previously unrecognized novel factor

    Greater male variability in daily energy expenditure develops through puberty

    There is considerably greater variation in metabolic rates between men than between women, in terms of basal, activity and total (daily) energy expenditure (EE). One possible explanation is that EE is associated with male sexual characteristics (which are known to vary more than other traits) such as musculature and athletic capacity. Such traits might be predicted to be most prominent during periods of adolescence and young adulthood, when sexual behaviour develops and peaks. We tested this hypothesis on a large dataset by comparing the amount of male variation and female variation in total EE, activity EE and basal EE, at different life stages, along with several morphological traits: height, fat free mass and fat mass. Total EE, and to some degree also activity EE, exhibit considerable greater male variation (GMV) in young adults, and then a decrease in the degree of GMV in progressively older individuals. Arguably, basal EE, and also morphometrics, do not exhibit this pattern. These findings suggest that single male sexual characteristics may not exhibit peak GMV in young adulthood, however total and perhaps also activity EE, associated with many morphological and physiological traits combined, do exhibit GMV most prominently during the reproductive life stages
