Flow dynamic environment data base development for the SSME

    Get PDF
The fluid flow-induced vibration of the Space Shuttle main engine (SSME) components are being studied with a view to correlating the frequency characteristics of the pressure fluctuations in a rocket engine to its operating conditions and geometry. An overview of the data base development for SSME test firing results and the interactive computer software used to access, retrieve, and plot or print the results selectively for given thrust levels, engine numbers, etc., is presented. The various statistical methods available in the computer code for data analysis are discussed. Plots of test data, nondimensionalized using parameters such as fluid flow velocities, densities, and pressures, are presented. Results are compared with those available in the literature. Correlations between the resonant peaks observed at higher frequencies in power spectral density plots with pump geometry and operating conditions are discussed. An overview of the status of the investigation is presented and future directions are discussed

    A Navier-Stokes Solution of Hull-Ring Wing-Thruster Interaction

    Get PDF
Navier-Stokes simulations of high Reynolds number flow around an axisymmetric body supported in a water tunnel were made. The numerical method is based on a finite-differencing high resolution second-order accurate implicit upwind scheme. Four different configurations were investigated, these are: (1) barebody; (2) body with an operating propeller; (3) body with a ring wing; and (4) body with a ring wing and an operating propeller. Pressure and velocity components near the stern region were obtained computationally and are shown to compare favorably with the experimental data. The method correctly predicts the existence and extent of stern flow separation for the barebody and the absence of flow separation for the three other configurations with ring wing and/or propeller

Retrospective Review of Fluoroscopic Swallowing Studies and Outcomes at an Academic Health Center

Introduction: Aspiration is often associated with underlying medical conditions and can cause pneumonia or death. Aspiration risk can be assessed via video fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) or barium swallow (BaSw). We aimed to assess the diagnoses and clinical course of patients who were evaluated for potential aspiration through VFSS or BaSw to determine if there is a degree of aspiration that increases the risk of developing pneumonia and/or death. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 374 patients in TJUH who were evaluated via VFSS or BaSw from January 1 to June 30, 2017. We recorded the degree and contents of aspiration, the underlying diagnoses, and evidence of subsequent pneumonia. We then collected data for any future admissions concerning for pneumonia. Results: Of the 374 patients, 165 had swallowing studies positive for laryngeal penetration or aspiration. Of the 165 patients, 78 patients (47.2%) had evidence of clinical and radiological pneumonia, and 18 of those 78 patients (23.1%) died. We found that 61 of 165 exhibited laryngeal penetration. Of those 61, 23 patients (37.7%) showed clinical and radiological signs of pneumonia, and 7 of the 23 (30.4%) died of aspiration pneumonia. Discussion: The incidence of pneumonia was considerable in persons with an abnormal swallow and the mortality rate was substantial. Minimally abnormal swallows with laryngeal penetration, but no true aspiration, still had serious consequences. While the incidence of pneumonia was lower (37.7%), there was a substanitial mortality rate (30.4%)

Landslide Susceptibility Zone using Frequency Ratio Model, Remote Sensing &GIS –A Case Study of Western Ghats, India (Part of Kodaikanal Taluk)

    Get PDF
Landslide is the most common natural hazards in hilly terrains due to factors like gravity, weathering, deforestation, earthquake, heavy precipitation etc results heavy loss causing widespread damage to property and infrastructure, besides loss of human lives almost every year. The aim of the study is to assess the Landslide susceptibility zones in the part of the area of Kodaikanal taluk, Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu using Remote sensing and GIS. In this Paper frequency ratio based on statistical methods is evaluated by interpretating the observed landslides and their controlling factors .The Most accurate results of frequency ratio is analyzed by using elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, geology, land use, distance to road, distance to drainage maps and confirmed by using previous empirical landslide  zonation data’s. Keywords: Landslide, Remote Sensing, GIS, Frequency Ratio.

The Magnetic Ordering of the 3d Wigner Crystal

Using Path Integral Monte Carlo, we have calculated exchange frequencies as electrons undergo ring exchanges of 2, 3 and 4 electrons in a ``clean'' 3d Wigner crystal (bcc lattice) as a function of density. We find pair exchange dominates and estimate the critical temperature for the transition to antiferromagnetic ordering to be roughly 1×1081 \times 10^{-8}Ry at melting. In contrast to the situation in 2d, the 3d Wigner crystal is different from the solid bcc 3He in that the pair exchange dominates because of the softer interparticle potential. We discuss implications for the magnetic phase diagram of the electron gas

Occurrence of juveniles of pomfrets in dol net catches at Trombay, Mumbai

Dol net is the main traditional fishing gear of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Dol net operation is mainly confined to a depth range of 10 to 30m. Pomfrets are usually found in the shelf waters off Mumbai.Juveniles are found in shallow water and their gut content analysis revealed presence of detritus to a large extent and some zooplankton groups. The juveniles are exploited from shallow waters and has been a reason for decline in catch
