Chandra Observations of Radio-Loud Quasars at z > 4: X-rays from the Radio Beacons of the Early Universe
We present the results of Chandra observations of six radio-loud quasars
(RLQs) and one optically bright radio-quiet quasar (RQQ) at z = 4.1-4.4. These
observations cover a representative sample of RLQs with moderate radio-loudness
(R ~ 40-400), filling the X-ray observational gap between optically selected
RQQs and the five known blazars at z > 4 (R ~ 800-27000). We study the
relationship between X-ray luminosity and radio-loudness for quasars at high
redshift and constrain RLQ X-ray continuum emission and absorption. From a
joint spectral fit of nine moderate-R RLQs observed by Chandra, we find
tentative evidence for absorption above the Galactic N_H, with a best-fit
neutral intrinsic column density of N_H = 2.4^{+2.0}_{-1.8} x 10^{22} cm^{-2},
consistent with earlier claims of increased absorption toward high-redshift
RLQs. We also search for evidence of an enhanced jet-linked component in the
X-ray emission due to the increased energy density of the cosmic microwave
background (CMB) at high redshift, but we find neither spatial detections of
X-ray jets nor a significant enhancement in the X-ray emission relative to
comparable RLQs at low-to-moderate redshifts. Overall, the z ~ 4-5 RLQs have
basic X-ray properties consistent with comparable RLQs in the local universe,
suggesting that the accretion/jet mechanisms of these objects are similar as

MIPS: The Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF
The Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF (MIPS) is to be designed to reach as closely as possible the fundamental sensitivity and angular resolution limits for SIRTF over the 3 to 700μm spectral region. It will use high performance photoconductive detectors from 3 to 200μm with integrating JFET amplifiers. From 200 to 700μm, the MIPS will use a bolometer cooled by an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. Over much of its operating range, the MIPS will make possible observations at and beyond the conventional Rayleigh diffraction limit of angular resolution
Nova Cygni 2001/2 = V2275 Cyg
We present an analysis of low- and medium resolution spectra of the very fast
nova, Nova Cygni 2001/2 (V2275 Cyg) obtained at nine epochs in August,
September and October, 2001. The expansion velocity from hydrogen Balmer lines
is found to be 2100 km/s, although early H-alpha profile showed a weak feature
at -3500 km/s, too. The overall appearance of the optical spectrum is dominated
by broad lines of H, He and N, therefore, the star belongs to the ``He/N''
subclass of novae defined by Williams (1992). Interstellar lines and bands, as
well as BV photometry taken from the literature yielded to a fairly high
reddening of E(B-V)=1.0+/-0.1 mag. The visual light curve was used to deduce
M_V by the maximum magnitude versus rate of decline relationship. The resulting
parameters are: t_0=2452141.4(+0.1)(-0.5), t_2=2.9+/-0.5 days, t_3=7+/-1 days,
M_V=-9.7+/-0.7 mag. Adopting these parameters, the star lies between 3 kpc and

Plutonium isotopic determination from gamma-ray spectra
The use of low- and medium-resolution room-temperature detectors for the nondestructive assay of nuclear materials has widespread applications to the safeguarding of nuclear materials. The challenge to using these detectors is the inherent difficulty of the spectral analysis to determine the amount of specific nuclear materials in the measured samples. This is especially true for extracting plutonium isotopic content from low- and medium-resolution spectral lines that are not well resolved. In this paper, neural networks trained by stochastic and singular value decomposition algorithms are applied to retrieve the plutonium isotopic content from a simulated NaI spectra. The simulated sample consists of isotopes {sup 238}Pu, {sup 239}Pu, {sup 240}Pu, {sup 241}Pu, {sup 242}Pu, and {sup 241}Am. It is demonstrated that the neutral network optimized by singular value decomposition (SVD) and stochastic training algorithms is capable of estimating plutonium content consistently resulting in an average error much smaller than the error previously reported
Emission Line Flickering from the Secondary Star in Cataclysmic Variables? A study of V3885 Sagitarii
Spectrophotometric observations of H-alpha and He I 6678 emission lines of
the nova-like Cataclysmic Variable V3885 Sgr are presented and analyzed. The
binary orbital period was determined as P = 0.20716071(22) days. Doppler
Tomography was performed with both H-alpha and He I lines. Disc radial
emissivity profiles were also computed. The tomography mapping of flickering
sources was performed using the H-alpha line, from which we concluded that the
flickering is not uniformly distributed on the disc. The observed tomogram of
the flickering was compared with simulations, suggesting that the most intense
flickering source in the H-alpha is not located in the accretion disc. It is
proposed that the main line flickering source may be associated with the

Infrared studies of the Be star X Per
Photometric and spectroscopic results are presented for the Be star X Per/HD
24534 from near-infrared monitoring in 2010-2011. The star is one of a sample
of selected Be/X-ray binaries being monitored by us in the near-IR to study
correlations between their X ray and near-IR behaviour. Comparison of the
star's present near-IR magnitudes with earlier records shows the star to be
currently in a prominently bright state with mean J, H, K magnitudes of 5.49,
5.33 and 5.06 respectively. The JHK spectra are dominated by emission lines of
HeI and Paschen and Brackett lines of HI. Lines of OI 1.1287 and 1.3165 micron
are also present and their relative strength indicates, since OI 1.1287 is
stronger among the two lines, that Lyman beta fluorescence plays an important
role in their excitation. Recombination analysis of the HI lines is done which
shows that the Paschen and Brackett line strengths deviate considerably from
case B predictions. These deviations are attributed to the lines being
optically thick and this supposition is verified by calculating the line center
optical depths predicted by recombination theory. Similar calculations indicate
that the Pfund and Humphrey series lines should also be expected to be
optically thick which is found to be consistent with observations reported in
other studies. The spectral energy distribution of the star is constructed and
shown to have an infrared excess. Based on the magnitude of the IR excess,
which is modeled using a free-free contribution from the disc, the electron
density in the disc is estimated and shown to be within the range of values

Irradiation of the secondary star in X-ray Nova Scorpii 1994 (=GRO J1655--40)
We have obtained intermediate resolution optical spectra of the black-hole
candidate Nova Sco 1994 in June 1996, when the source was in an X-ray/optical
active state (R~15.05). We measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary
star and obtain a semi-amplitude of 279+/-10 km/s; a value which is 30 per cent
larger than the value obtained when the source is in quiescence. Our large
value for K_2 is consistent with 60 +9,-7 per cent of the secondary star's
surface being heated; compared to 35 per cent, which is what one would expect
if only the inner face of the secondary star were irradiated. Effects such as
irradiation-induced flows on the secondary star may be important in explaining

De novo lipogenesis alters the phospholipidome of esophageal adenocarcinoma
The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma is rising, survival remains poor, and new tools to improve early diagnosis and precise treatment are needed. Cancer phospholipidomes quantified with mass spectrometry imaging can support objective diagnosis in minutes using a routine frozen tissue section. However, whether mass spectrometry imaging can objectively identify primary esophageal adenocarcinoma is currently unknown and represents a significant challenge, as this microenvironment is complex with phenotypically similar tissue-types. Here we used desorption electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) and bespoke chemometrics to assess the phospholipidomes of esophageal adenocarcinoma and relevant control tissues. Multivariable models derived from phospholipid profiles of 117 patients were highly discriminant for esophageal adenocarcinoma both in discovery (area-under-curve = 0.97) and validation cohorts (AUC = 1). Among many other changes, esophageal adenocarcinoma samples were markedly enriched for polyunsaturated phosphatidylglycerols with longer acyl chains, with stepwise enrichment in pre-malignant tissues. Expression of fatty acid and glycerophospholipid synthesis genes was significantly upregulated, and characteristics of fatty acid acyls matched glycerophospholipid acyls. Mechanistically, silencing the carbon switch ACLY in esophageal adenocarcinoma cells shortened GPL chains, linking de novo lipogenesis to the phospholipidome. Thus, DESI-MSI can objectively identify invasive esophageal adenocarcinoma from a number of pre-malignant tissues and unveils mechanisms of phospholipidomic reprogramming. These results call for accelerated diagnosis studies using DESI-MSI in the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy suite as well as functional studies to determine how polyunsaturated phosphatidylglycerols contribute to esophageal carcinogenesis
Coupling of alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors to ERK1/2 in the Human Prostate
Introduction: alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors are considered critical for the regulation of prostatic smooth muscle tone. However, previous studies suggested further alpha(1)-adrenoceptor functions besides contraction. Here, we investigated whether alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in the human prostate may activate extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2). Methods: Prostate tissues from patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were stimulated in vitro. Activation of ERK1/2 was assessed by Western blot analysis. Expression of ERK1/2 was studied by immunohistochemistry. The effect of ERK1/2 inhibition by U0126 on phenylephrine-induced contraction was studied in organ-bath experiments. Results: Stimulation of human prostate tissue with noradrenaline (30 mu M) or phenylephrine (10 mu M) resulted in ERK activation. This was reflected by increased levels of phosphorylated ERK1/2. Expression of ERK1/2 in the prostate was observed in smooth muscle cells. Incubation of prostate tissue with U0126 (30 mu M) resulted in ERK1/2 inhibition. Dose-dependent phenylephrine-induced contraction of prostate tissue was not modulated by U0126. Conclusions: alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors in the human prostate are coupled to ERK1/2. This may partially explain previous observations suggesting a role of alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in the regulation of prostate growth. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base
