Challenging the orthodoxy: union learning representatives as organic intellectuals
Teacher education and continuing professional development have become a key areas of controversy in England since the period of school sector restructuring following the 1988 Education Reform Act. More recently teacher training and professional development have often been used to promote and reinforce a narrow focus on the government’s ‘standards agenda’. However, the emerging discourse of ‘new professionalism’ has raised the profile of professional development in schools, and together with union learning representatives, there are opportunities to secure real improvements in teachers’ access to continuing professional development. This paper argues however that union learning representatives must go beyond advocating for better access to professional development and should raise more fundamental questions about the nature of professional development and the education system it serves. Drawing on Gramsci’s notion of the ‘organic intellectual’, the paper argues that union learning representatives have a key role as organisers of ideas – creating spaces in which the ideological dominance of current policy orthodoxy might be challenged

My aim in this thesis has been to try to show how English and Scottish.
aestheticians in the eighteenth century drew upon certain ideas prominent
in the writings of Hobbes, Locke, and Berkeley, and used them in formulating
solutions to problems facing them. In doing this, I have tried to exclude
all issues, even closely related ones, which might distract attention from mfr
principal theme. Questions of such moment as the influence of Bacon on
Hobbes, the relation of eighteenth century aesthetic theory to ancient aesthetic:
the influence of French philosophers and aestheticians on their English
counterparts, and the effects of the work of Shaftesbury and Hume have
therefore received no special attention.The field I have tried to coaxer is a large one, and is still
relatively speaking unexplored, though there has been a re- awakening of
interest in it in the last fifteen years, chiefly in the United States and in
Italy. But an enormous amount of work remains to be done, and I can claim
to have done no more than touch upon the many outstanding problems.The scheme I have adopted is as follows. The first part I have devoted
to individual problems which may be classed as psychological in nature, and
some at least of which had to be investigated before any aesthetic could be
developed. The second part deals with questions more purely philosophical -
the nature of perceptions, ideas, and language. Finally, in the third part; I
have tried to trace the growth of two of the most important schools of aesthetic
hive
thought, both of which seem town out of suggestions made by Hobbes and
Locke. An all too short introduction is provided in the hope of supplying
what is necessarily lacking in a thesis of this nature - an overall view
of the period concerned, such as can not unfortunately be found in any other

A comparison of homonym meaning frequency estimates derived from movie and television subtitles, free association, and explicit ratings
First Online: 10 September 2018Most words are ambiguous, with interpretation dependent on context. Advancing theories of ambiguity resolution is important for any general theory of language processing, and for resolving inconsistencies in observed ambiguity effects across experimental tasks. Focusing on homonyms (words such as bank with unrelated meanings EDGE OF A RIVER vs. FINANCIAL INSTITUTION), the present work advances theories and methods for estimating the relative frequency of their meanings, a factor that shapes observed ambiguity effects. We develop a new method for estimating meaning frequency based on the meaning of a homonym evoked in lines of movie and television subtitles according to human raters. We also replicate and extend a measure of meaning frequency derived from the classification of free associates. We evaluate the internal consistency of these measures, compare them to published estimates based on explicit ratings of each meaning’s frequency, and compare each set of norms in predicting performance in lexical and semantic decision mega-studies. All measures have high internal consistency and show agreement, but each is also associated with unique variance, which may be explained by integrating cognitive theories of memory with the demands of different experimental methodologies. To derive frequency estimates, we collected manual classifications of 533 homonyms over 50,000 lines of subtitles, and of 357 homonyms across over 5000 homonym–associate pairs. This database—publicly available at: www.blairarmstrong.net/homonymnorms/—constitutes a novel resource for computational cognitive modeling and computational linguistics, and we offer suggestions around good practices for its use in training and testing models on labeled data

Active Carbon and Oxygen Shell Burning Hydrodynamics
We have simulated 2.5 s of the late evolution of a star with full hydrodynamic behavior. We present the first simulations
of a multiple-shell burning epoch, including the concurrent evolution and
interaction of an oxygen and carbon burning shell. In addition, we have evolved
a 3D model of the oxygen burning shell to sufficiently long times (300 s) to
begin to assess the adequacy of the 2D approximation. We summarize striking new
results: (1) strong interactions occur between active carbon and oxygen burning
shells, (2) hydrodynamic wave motions in nonconvective regions, generated at
the convective-radiative boundaries, are energetically important in both 2D and
3D with important consequences for compositional mixing, and (3) a spectrum of
mixed p- and g-modes are unambiguously identified with corresponding adiabatic
waves in these computational domains. We find that 2D convective motions are
exaggerated relative to 3D because of vortex instability in 3D. We discuss the
implications for supernova progenitor evolution and symmetry breaking in core

ULTRACAM photometry of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable OU Vir
We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the faint eclipsing
cataclysmic variable OU Vir. For the first time in OU Vir, separate eclipses of
the white dwarf and bright spot have been observed. We use timings of these
eclipses to derive a purely photometric model of the system, obtaining a mass
ratio of q = 0.175 +/- 0.025, an inclination of i = 79.2 +/- 0.7 degrees and a
disc radius of Rd/a = 0.2315 +/- 0.0150. We separate the white dwarf eclipse
from the lightcurve and, by fitting a blackbody spectrum to its flux in each
passband, obtain a white dwarf temperature of T = 21700 +/- 1200 K and a
distance of D = 650 +/- 210 pc. Assuming that the primary obeys the Nauenberg
(1972) mass-radius relation for white dwarfs and allowing for temperature
effects, we also find a primary mass Mw/Msun = 0.90 +/- 0.19, primary radius
Rw/Rsun = 0.0097 +/- 0.0031 and orbital separation a/Rsun = 0.75 +/- 0.05.Comment: 8 pages LaTeX, 6 figures. Accepted by MNRAS; erratum added at end.
