    System size and beam energy dependence of azimuthal anisotropy from PHENIX

    We present azimuthal anisotropy measurements in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 and 200 GeV. Comparison between reaction plane and cumulant v2v_2 measurements in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV show that non-flow contributions, originating mainly from jets, influence the extracted v2v_2 for pTp_T \gtrsim 3.5 GeV/c. Number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of v2v_2, when studied as a function of transverse kinetic energy KETKE_T, is seen to hold for Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 and 200 GeV and for Cu+Cu collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV for KETKE_{T} \lesssim 1 GeV/c. Differential hexadecupole flow v4v_4 seems to exhibit scaling with integral v2v_2 for centrality \le 40% as has been observed for differential v2v_2.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of the QM2008 Conference, Jaipur, India February 4-10 200

    Measurement of charm and bottom production in p+p collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV at RHIC-PHENIX

    RHIC-PHENIX has observed a large suppression pattern and azimuthal anisotropy of non-photonic electron at mid-rapidity (η<0.35\mid\eta\mid<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV. To understand these results and the interaction of heavy quarks in the hot and dense medium, experimental determination of production ratio of charm over bottom is one of the most important topics, since the behavior of bottom may differ from charm in the medium. We measured the ratio of charm over bottom and total cross section of bottom via partial reconstruction of D0^0\toe+^+ K^- νe\nu_e decay in p+p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. Total cross sections of charm and bottom were also measured via di-electron continuum in p+p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV.Comment: 4pages, 4figures,coferenc

    A new calculation of R_{dAu} has been performed using the 2003 d+Au data and the higher-statistics 2005 p+p data. These nuclear modification factors are compared to calculations using nuclear-modified PDFs and a J/psi breakup cross section is extracted. These values are then used to project the cold nuclear matter effects in Au+Au collisions.     The measurement of single leptons from the semi-leptonic decay of heavy-flavor hadrons has long been a means for studying heavy-quark production. PHENIX has measured single muons in pp collisions at forward rapidity and single electrons in both pp and AuAu collisions at mid-rapidity at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The most recent PHENIX single lepton results are presented in the context of state-of-the-art pQCD calculations.     Reorientation to more health promotion in health services – a study of barriers and possibilities from the perspective of health professionals

    Aim: The objective of this study is to analyze the commitment to a more health-promoting health service and to illuminate important barriers for having a health-promoting role in daily practice, among Swedish health care professionals. Material and method: Out of a total of 3751 health professionals who are working daytime in clinical practice in the province of Västerbotten, 1810 were invited to participate in a survey. The health professionals represented eight different occupational groups: counselors, dieticians, midwives, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and physicians. A questionnaire that operationalized perceptions found in a previous qualitative study was mailed to residential addresses of the participants. Results: The majority believed that health services play a major role in long-term health development in the population and saw a need for health orientation as a strategy to provide more effective health care. Willingness to work more in health promotion and disease prevention was reported significantly more often by women than men, and by primary health care personnel compared to hospital personnel. Among the professional groups, psychologists, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists most frequently reported willingness. The most common barriers to health promotion roles in daily practice were reported to be heavy workload, lack of guidelines, and unclear objectives. Conclusions: This study found strong support for reorientation of health services in the incorporation of a greater health promotion. A number of professions that are not usually associated with health promotion practices are knowledgeable and wish to focus more on health promotion and disease prevention. Management has a major role in creating opportunities for these professionals to participate in health promotion practices. Men and physicians reported less positive attitudes to a more health-promoting health service and often possess high positions of power.     A Long-Term Study of Neospora caninum Infection in a Swedish Dairy Herd

    A longitudinal study was performed in a Swedish dairy herd where Neospora caninum had been isolated from a stillborn calf. Starting in autumn 1994, blood samples from all female animals in the herd were collected once yearly until 1999. The sera were analysed for presence of IgG(1 )antibodies to N. caninum by the iscom ELISA, and by an avidity ELISA to establish the timing of infection. In addition, data on reproductive performance were compiled. During the study the percentage of seropositive female animals increased from 63% to 87%. In 1994 a large number of young animals tested seropositive although their dams were seronegative, indicating that a transmission of the parasite other than the vertical had recently occurred. Low avidity values supported this assumption. The annual abortion rate increased from a mean of 2% before the initiation of the study to 9% in 1994–1998. During the same time, as judged by the avidity data, a large proportion of the animals shifted from being recently to being chronically infected. The source of the external infection in the herd could not be identified

    Identified Particle Jet Correlations from PHENIX

    Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been shown to be a powerful probe for extracting novel features of the interaction between hard scattered partons and the medium produced in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. At intermediate pTp_T, 2-5GeV/c, jets have been shown to be significantly modified in both particle composition and angular distribution compared to p+pcollisions.     Low vitamin D levels during pregnancy may have negative consequences for the health of both the mother and child. Cross-sectional studies in childbearing women suggest that vitamin D levels are low during pregnancy, but few studies have followed the same women during pregnancy and postpartum. The aims of this study were to longitudinally assess vitamin D status during pregnancy and postpartum and identify the factors associated with vitamin D status in pregnant women in northern Sweden. Between September 2006 and March 2009, 184 women were consecutively recruited at five antenatal primary care clinics. Blood was sampled, and dietary intake was estimated using a food frequency questionnaire with 66 food items/food aggregates and questions on the intake of vitamin supplements at gestational weeks 12, 21, and 35, as well as at 12 and 29 weeks after birth. Plasma 25(OH) vitamin D levels were analyzed using liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry. At least one-third of the women had 25(OH) vitamin D levels &lt;50 nmol/L on at least one sampling occasion. Plasma levels increased slightly over the gestation period and peaked in late pregnancy. The levels reverted to the baseline levels after birth. Multivariate analysis showed that gestational and postpartum week, season, dietary intake of vitamin D, and vitamin supplementation were significantly related to plasma levels. There was also an influence of season on the longitudinal concentration patterns. In conclusion, more than one-third of the women studied had low 25(OH) vitamin D levels, and gestational and postpartum week was related to 25(OH) vitamin D levels after adjustment for season and vitamin D intake

    PHENIX measurement of jet properties and their modification in heavy-ion collisions

    The properties of jets produced in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV are studied using the method of two particle correlations. The trigger particle is assumed to be a leading particle from a high p_T jet while the associated particle is assumed to come from either the same jet or the away jet.
