MLPnP - A Real-Time Maximum Likelihood Solution to the Perspective-n-Point Problem
In this paper, a statistically optimal solution to the Perspective-n-Point
(PnP) problem is presented. Many solutions to the PnP problem are geometrically
optimal, but do not consider the uncertainties of the observations. In
addition, it would be desirable to have an internal estimation of the accuracy
of the estimated rotation and translation parameters of the camera pose. Thus,
we propose a novel maximum likelihood solution to the PnP problem, that
incorporates image observation uncertainties and remains real-time capable at
the same time. Further, the presented method is general, as is works with 3D
direction vectors instead of 2D image points and is thus able to cope with
arbitrary central camera models. This is achieved by projecting (and thus
reducing) the covariance matrices of the observations to the corresponding
vector tangent space.Comment: Submitted to the ISPRS congress (2016) in Prague. Oral Presentation.

Quantum Corrections to Thermopower and Conductivity in Graphene
The quantum corrections to the conductivity and the thermopower in monolayer
graphene are studied. We use the recursive Green's function method to calculate
numerically the conductivity and the thermopower of graphene. We then analyze
these weak localization corrections by fitting with the analytical theory as
function of the impurity parameters and the gate potential. As a result of the
quantum corrections to the thermopower, we find large magnetothermopower which
is shown to provide a very sensitive measure of the size and strength of the
impurities. We compare these analytical and numerical results with existing
experimental measurements of magnetoconductance of single layer graphene and
find that the average size and strength of the impurities in these samples can
thereby be determined. We suggest favorable parameter ranges for future
measurements of the magnetothermopower
So
besticht der Gipfel bei Inversionswetterlagen nicht nur mit einer

A Factorial Survey on the Justice of Earnings within the SOEP-Pretest 2008
In the 2008 Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) Pretest, the factorial survey method was tested for the first time for use in the SOEP longitudinal study. In this paper, we describe the construction and application of the vignette module, which has its origins in the field of justice research and is used in particular in the measurement of income justice. We show that the factorial survey method is applicable in large-scale survey research when taking certain constraints into account, and that respondents of varying ages and educational groups are able to deal sufficiently well with answering the questions. The results obtained suggest that older respondents tend to take fewer dimensions into consideration in forming their opinions. Further studies will be needed to determine whether this is evidence that the evaluation tasks were too complex for these respondents and should thus be interpreted as a method effect, or whether it represents a valid substantive result. The results of the study demonstrate convincingly that alongside occupation, education, and performance-factors relating directly to employment-familial aspects such as civil status, the partner's employment status, and number of children constitute important criteria for determining what constitutes a "fair" income. The factor survey in the 2008 SOEP Pretest offers diverse analytical potential, both from a methodological point of view and in terms of the empirical results obtained. The positive experience with the 2008 SOEP Pretest suggests that the SOEP vignette module can be used effectively in a future wave of the main SOEP survey.income, justice theory, fairness, factorial survey method, SOEP
Locating disparities in machine learning
Machine learning can provide predictions with disparate outcomes, in which
subgroups of the population (e.g., defined by age, gender, or other sensitive
attributes) are systematically disadvantaged. In order to comply with upcoming
legislation, practitioners need to locate such disparate outcomes. However,
previous literature typically detects disparities through statistical
procedures for when the sensitive attribute is specified a priori. This limits
applicability in real-world settings where datasets are high dimensional and,
on top of that, sensitive attributes may be unknown. As a remedy, we propose a
data-driven framework called Automatic Location of Disparities (ALD) which aims
at locating disparities in machine learning. ALD meets several demands from
industry: ALD (1) is applicable to arbitrary machine learning classifiers; (2)
operates on different definitions of disparities (e.g., statistical parity or
equalized odds); and (3) deals with both categorical and continuous predictors
even if disparities arise from complex and multi-way interactions known as
intersectionality (e. g., age above 60 and female). ALD produces interpretable
audit reports as output. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ALD based on both
synthetic and real-world datasets. As a result, we empower practitioners to
effectively locate and mitigate disparities in machine learning algorithms,
conduct algorithmic audits, and protect individuals from discrimination
