    Conservative interacting particles system with anomalous rate of ergodicity

    We analyze certain conservative interacting particle system and establish ergodicity of the system for a family of invariant measures. Furthermore, we show that convergence rate to equilibrium is exponential. This result is of interest because it presents counterexample to the standard assumption of physicists that conservative system implies polynomial rate of convergence.Comment: 16 pages; In the previous version there was a mistake in the proof of uniqueness of weak Leray solution.     In the present paper we study forward Quantum Markov Chains (QMC) defined on a Cayley tree. Using the tree structure of graphs, we give a construction of quantum Markov chains on a Cayley tree. By means of such constructions we prove the existence of a phase transition for the XY-model on a Cayley tree of order three in QMC scheme. By the phase transition we mean the existence of two now quasi equivalent QMC for the given family of interaction operators {K}\{K_{}\}.Comment: 34 pages, 1 figur

    Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics of Currents in Queuing Networks

    We consider a stable open queuing network as a steady non-equilibrium system of interacting particles. The network is completely specified by its underlying graphical structure, type of interaction at each node, and the Markovian transition rates between nodes. For such systems, we ask the question ``What is the most likely way for large currents to accumulate over time in a network ?'', where time is large compared to the system correlation time scale. We identify two interesting regimes. In the first regime, in which the accumulation of currents over time exceeds the expected value by a small to moderate amount (moderate large deviation), we find that the large-deviation distribution of currents is universal (independent of the interaction details), and there is no long-time and averaged over time accumulation of particles (condensation) at any nodes. In the second regime, in which the accumulation of currents over time exceeds the expected value by a large amount (severe large deviation), we find that the large-deviation current distribution is sensitive to interaction details, and there is a long-time accumulation of particles (condensation) at some nodes. The transition between the two regimes can be described as a dynamical second order phase transition. We illustrate these ideas using the simple, yet non-trivial, example of a single node with feedback.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figure

    Implementing NICE guidelines for the psychological treatment of depression and anxiety disorders: The IAPT experience

    The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme is a large-scale initiative that aims to greatly increase the availability of NICE recommended psychological treatment for depression and anxiety disorders within the National Health Service in England. This article describes the background to the programme, the arguments on which it is based, the therapist training scheme, the clinical service model, and a summary of progress to date. At mid-point in a national roll-out of the programme progress is generally in line with expectation, and a large number of people who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to receive evidence-based psychological treatment have accessed, and benefited from, the new IAPT services. Planned future developments and challenges for the programme are briefly described

    Ways of Asking, Ways of Telling: A Methodological Comparison of Ethnographic and Research Diagnostic Interviews

    The interpretive understanding that can be derived from interviews is highly influenced by methods of data collection, be they structured or semistructured, ethnographic, clinical, life-history or survey interviews. This article responds to calls for research into the interview process by analyzing data produced by two distinctly different types of interview, a semistructured ethnographic interview and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM, conducted with participants in the Navajo Healing Project. We examine how the two interview genres shape the context of researcher-respondent interaction and, in turn, influence how patients articulate their lives and their experience in terms of illness, causality, social environment, temporality and self/identity. We discuss the manner in which the two interviews impose narrative constraints on interviewers and respondents, with significant implications for understanding the jointly constructed nature of the interview process. The argument demonstrates both divergence and complementarity in the construction of knowledge by means of these interviewing methods

    Sequential cavity method for computing free energy and surface pressure

    We propose a new method for the problems of computing free energy and surface pressure for various statistical mechanics models on a lattice Zd\Z^d. Our method is based on representing the free energy and surface pressure in terms of certain marginal probabilities in a suitably modified sublattice of Zd\Z^d. Then recent deterministic algorithms for computing marginal probabilities are used to obtain numerical estimates of the quantities of interest. The method works under the assumption of Strong Spatial Mixing (SSP), which is a form of a correlation decay. We illustrate our method for the hard-core and monomer-dimer models, and improve several earlier estimates. For example we show that the exponent of the monomer-dimer coverings of Z3\Z^3 belongs to the interval [0.78595,0.78599][0.78595,0.78599], improving best previously known estimate of (approximately) [0.7850,0.7862][0.7850,0.7862] obtained in \cite{FriedlandPeled},\cite{FriedlandKropLundowMarkstrom}. Moreover, we show that given a target additive error ϵ>0\epsilon>0, the computational effort of our method for these two models is (1/ϵ)O(1)(1/\epsilon)^{O(1)} \emph{both} for free energy and surface pressure. In contrast, prior methods, such as transfer matrix method, require exp((1/ϵ)O(1))\exp\big((1/\epsilon)^{O(1)}\big) computation effort.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure

    Random Convex Hulls and Extreme Value Statistics

    In this paper we study the statistical properties of convex hulls of NN random points in a plane chosen according to a given distribution. The points may be chosen independently or they may be correlated. After a non-exhaustive survey of the somewhat sporadic literature and diverse methods used in the random convex hull problem, we present a unifying approach, based on the notion of support function of a closed curve and the associated Cauchy's formulae, that allows us to compute exactly the mean perimeter and the mean area enclosed by the convex polygon both in case of independent as well as correlated points. Our method demonstrates a beautiful link between the random convex hull problem and the subject of extreme value statistics. As an example of correlated points, we study here in detail the case when the points represent the vertices of nn independent random walks. In the continuum time limit this reduces to nn independent planar Brownian trajectories for which we compute exactly, for all nn, the mean perimeter and the mean area of their global convex hull. Our results have relevant applications in ecology in estimating the home range of a herd of animals. Some of these results were announced recently in a short communication [Phys. Rev.     The pattern of growth hormone secretion during the menstrual cycle in normal and depressed women

    Objective Major depression is associated to altered hypothalamic pituitary function. Stress is linked to elevated cortisol as well as menstrual cycle disturbance; however, there is no known relationship between depression and menstrual cycle disruption. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of growth hormone (GH) secretion during the menstrual cycle in normal and depressed women. Design Case-control study. Patients and methods Nineteen women affected with depression and 24 normal controls were included. The two groups had comparable body mass index (BMI), and age (29·4 ±9·8 vs. 28·6 ± 9·7 years). Nine depressed and 10 controls were studied in the follicular phase, while 10 depressed and 14 controls were studied in the luteal phase of the cycle. GH was sampled every 10 min for 24 h, and the data were analysed by the cluster pulse detection method. Results There was no difference in 24-h mean GH concentrations between depressed and control subjects (P =0·93), even after accounting for menstrual cycle phase (P = 0·38). GH pulse frequency was higher during the follicular phase of the cycle (P =0·032), and nocturnal GH was higher in the follicular phase of the cycle (P =0·05, and after adjusting for 24-h GH, P= 0·0138) regardless of whether thesubjects were depressed or healthy.     Baryons: What, When and Where?

    We review the current state of empirical knowledge of the total budget of baryonic matter in the Universe as observed since the epoch of reionization. Our summary examines on three milestone redshifts since the reionization of H in the IGM, z = 3, 1, and 0, with emphasis on the endpoints. We review the observational techniques used to discover and characterize the phases of baryons.     The Theory of Brown Dwarfs and Extrasolar Giant Planets

    Straddling the traditional realms of the planets and the stars, objects below the edge of the main sequence have such unique properties, and are being discovered in such quantities, that one can rightly claim that a new field at the interface of planetary science and and astronomy is being born. In this review, we explore the essential elements of the theory of brown dwarfs and giant planets, as well as of the new spectroscopic classes L and T. To this end, we describe their evolution, spectra, atmospheric compositions, chemistry, physics, and nuclear phases and explain the basic systematics of substellar-mass objects across three orders of magnitude in both mass and age and a factor of 30 in effective temperature. Moreover, we discuss the distinctive features of those extrasolar giant planets that are irradiated by a central primary, in particular their reflection spectra, albedos, and transits. Aspects of the latest theory of Jupiter and Saturn are also presented. Throughout, we highlight the effects of condensates, clouds, molecular abundances, and molecular/atomic opacities in brown dwarf and giant planet atmospheres and summarize the resulting spectral diagnostics.
