    For obvious psychological reasons it is difficult to associate pregnancy - a life-giving period of our existence with life-threatening malignancies. Symptoms pointing to malignancy are often ignored by both patients and physicians, and this, together with the greater difficulty of diagnostic imaging, probably results in the proven delay in the detection of breast cancers during pregnancy. The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are becoming more and more important, as the fulfillment of the desire to have children is increasingly postponed until a later age associated with a higher risk of carcinoma, and improved cure rates of solid tumors no longer exclude subsequent pregnancies. The following article summarizes the special features of the diagnosis and primary therapy of pregnancy-associated breast cancer with particular consideration of cytostatic therapy

    Avalanche Size Scaling in Sheared Three-Dimensional Amorphous Solid

    We have studied the statistics of plastic rearrangement events in a simulated amorphous solid at T=0. Events are characterized by the energy release and the ``slip volume'', the product of plastic strain and system volume. Their distributions for a given system size LL appear to be exponential, but a characteristic event size cannot be inferred, because the mean values of these quantities increase as LαL^{\alpha} with α3/2\alpha \sim 3/2. In contrast to results obtained in 2D models, we do not see simply connected avalanches. The exponent suggests a fractal shape of the avalanches, which is also evidenced by the mean fractal dimension and participation ratio.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Renormalization approach to many-particle systems

    This paper presents a renormalization approach to many-particle systems. By starting from a bare Hamiltonian H=H0+H1{\cal H}= {\cal H}_0 +{\cal H}_1 with an unperturbed part H0{\cal H}_0 and a perturbation H1{\cal H}_1,we define an effective Hamiltonian which has a band-diagonal shape with respect to the eigenbasis of H0{\cal H}_0. This means that all transition matrix elements are suppressed which have energy differences larger than a given cutoff λ\lambda that is smaller than the cutoff Λ\Lambda of the original Hamiltonian. This property resembles a recent flow equation approach on the basis of continuous unitary transformations. For demonstration of the method we discuss an exact solvable model, as well as the Anderson-lattice model where the well-known quasiparticle behavior of heavy fermions is derived.Comment: 11 pages, final version, to be published in Phys.     Retinal oscillations carry visual information to cortex

    Thalamic relay cells fire action potentials that transmit information from retina to cortex. The amount of information that spike trains encode is usually estimated from the precision of spike timing with respect to the stimulus. Sensory input, however, is only one factor that influences neural activity. For example, intrinsic dynamics, such as oscillations of networks of neurons, also modulate firing pattern. Here, we asked if retinal oscillations might help to convey information to neurons downstream. Specifically, we made whole-cell recordings from relay cells to reveal retinal inputs (EPSPs) and thalamic outputs (spikes) and analyzed these events with information theory. Our results show that thalamic spike trains operate as two multiplexed channels. One channel, which occupies a low frequency band (<30 Hz), is encoded by average firing rate with respect to the stimulus and carries information about local changes in the image over time. The other operates in the gamma frequency band (40-80 Hz) and is encoded by spike time relative to the retinal oscillations. Because these oscillations involve extensive areas of the retina, it is likely that the second channel transmits information about global features of the visual scene.     Scaling of gauge balls and static potential in the confinement phase of the pure U(1) lattice gauge theory

    We investigate the scaling behaviour of gauge-ball masses and static potential in the pure U(1) lattice gauge theory on toroidal lattices. An extended gauge field action P(βcosΘP+γcos2ΘP)-\sum_P(\beta \cos\Theta_P + \gamma \cos2\Theta_P) is used with γ=0.2\gamma= -0.2 and -0.5. Gauge-ball correlation functions with all possible lattice quantum numbers are calculated. Most gauge-ball masses scale with the non-Gaussian exponent νng0.36\nu_{ng}\approx 0.36. The A1++A_1^{++} gauge-ball mass scales with the Gaussian value νg0.5\nu_{g} \approx 0.5 in the investigated range of correlation lengths. The static potential is examined with Sommer's method. The long range part scales consistently with νng\nu_{ng} but the short range part tends to yield smaller values of ν\nu. The β\beta-function, having a UV stable zero, is obtained from the running coupling. These results hold for both γ\gamma values, supporting universality.
