Characteristics of thunderstorm outflows in Beijing urban area

    Get PDF
The study of thunderstorm outflows and their actions on structures is a dominant topic of wind engineering. This paper contributes to knowledge in this field through a systematic analysis of the thunderstorm outflows recorded by 9 anemometers installed at different heights along the 325 m high Beijing Meteorological Tower. Analyses are carried out through a directional decomposition strategy. The characteristics of a wide dataset of thunderstorm signals are analysed in a statistical environment coherent with the traditional one for synoptic winds; in this stage of the research, estimations of the mean wind speed and direction, the turbulence parameters and gust factor are carried out considering the records as disjoint from each other. Based on this choice, the results are compared with those obtained in the northern Mediterranean, providing a preliminary answer to the crucial question whether thunderstorms have similar properties in different areas, or, better, what of their properties are similar and what depend on the area itself. Besides to previous researches, the time evolution of the wind speed and direction profile is investigated with reference to a thunderstorm test case event. The systematic analysis of the full dataset of thunderstorm outflow fields is postponed to future researches

Identification of virulence markers in clinically relevant strains of Acinetobacter genospecies

Nine Acinetobacter strains from patients and hospital environment were analyzed for virulence markers, quorum sensing signal production, and the presence of luxI and luxR genes. The strains had several properties in common: growth in iron limited condition, biofilm formation, and no active protease secretion. Significantly higher catechol production was determined in patient isolates (P < 0.03), but other invasiveness markers, such as lipase secretion, amount of biofilm, cell motility, antibiotic resistance, and hemolysin production, showed large variability. Notably, all members of the so-called A. calcoaceticus-A. baumannii complex, regardless of whether the source was a patient or environmental, secreted medium to long-chain N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) and showed blue light inhibition of cell motility. In these strains, a luxI homologue with a homoserine lactone synthase domain and a luxR putative regulator displaying the typical AHL binding domain were identified

Chromosomal control of non-gliadin proteins from the 70% ethanol extract of wheat endosperm

The non-gliadin fraction of the 70% ethanol extracts of compensated nulli-tetrasomics and ditelosomics of Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring has been analyzed by combined electrofocusing and electrophoresis. Seventeen of the 21 protein map components of the euploid have been ascribed to eight chromosomes: 4A, 3BS, 6BS, 7BS, 3D, 4D, 5D and 7DS. The relationship of the different map components with other proteins previously associated with the same chromosomes is discusse

Nonlinear Interaction of Transversal Modes in a CO2 Laser

We show the possibility of achieving experimentally a Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation for the nonlinear interaction of two transverse modes (l=±1l = \pm 1) in a CO2CO_2 laser. The system has a basic O(2) symmetry which is perturbed by some symmetry-breaking effects that still preserve the Z2Z_2 symmetry. The pattern dynamics near this codimension two bifurcation under such symmetries is described. This dynamics changes drastically when the laser properties are modified.Comment: 16 pages, 0 figure

On the estimation of the bed-material transport and budget along a river segment: application to the Middle Loire River, France

    Get PDF
Sediment load and budgets are a fundamental component of the process-based hydromorphological framework developed by the REFORM project, and are needed to accurately assess the current condition of a river, its sensitivity to change, and its likely future evolutionary trajectory. This paper presents an evaluation of three different methods for estimating both bedload sediment transport and bed-material budget within river channels, using the Middle Loire River as a case study. The first method is based on the stream power concept and does not need any hydraulic calculations. It yields estimates of the sediment transport in the same order of magnitude as measurements but poor results for the bed-material budget in terms of magnitude and tendency. For the second method, hydraulic parameters are computed using the Manning–Strickler equation (or a 1D hydraulic model for steady flow). It provides useful indicators for understanding river dynamics but does not yield significant improvements compared to the first method. The third method uses 1D numerical software for water flow and river bed evolution. It yields the most accurate results for both sediment transport and bed evolution but requires more data and overall more work to construct the model. Guidance is provided on the amount of data required, the competence needed to build the models, and the predictive capability of each of the methods

optical coherence tomography angiography in optic nerve sheath meningioma

This study describes Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) features of Optic Nerve Sheath Meningioma (ONSM).A 22-year-old woman, diagnosed with meningioma encircling the right optic nerve inside the intraorbital segment optic canal at the magnetic resonance imaging, showed a normal fundus examination.Instead, SD-OCT and OCTA revealed alterations in the neurostructure and microvascular network of the optic nerve.Despite fundoscopy and fluorescein angiography, SD-OCT and OCTA represent valid, non-invasive and reliable methods to evaluate neurostructural and vascular irregularities in this benign tumor of the optic nerve.
