The author analyses the arrangement, the style and the language in 16 papers approved for print in a Polish professional museum journal. She views them in the communication context i.e. from the point of view of the needs and goals of scientific information exchange among scholars from various areas of the humanities. The author uses the definition of communication skills coined by Stanisław Grabias. By approaching the texts as intentional expressions of specific individuals reflecting their communication skills, the author examines the writers’ systematic, social, situational and pragmatic linguistic proficiency.Autorka analizuje kompozycję, język i styl 16 artykułów przyjętych do druku w pewnym czasopiśmie muzealnym. Modelling the energy dependencies of high-frequency QPO in black hole X-ray binaries

We model energy dependencies of the quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) in the model of disc epicyclic motions, with X-ray modulation caused by varying relativistic effects. The model was proposed to explain the high frequency QPO observed in X-ray binaries. We consider two specific scenarios for the geometry of accretion flow and spectral formation. Firstly, a standard cold accretion disc with an active X-ray emitting corona is assumed to oscillate. Secondly, only a hot X-ray emitting accretion flow oscillates, while the cold disc is absent at the QPO radius. We find that the QPO spectra are generally similar to the spectrum of radiation emitted at the QPO radius, and they are broadened by the relativistic effects. In particular, the QPO spectrum contains the disc component in the oscillating disc with a corona scenario. We also review the available data on energy dependencies of high frequency QPO, and we point out that they appear to lack the disc component in their energy spectra. This would suggest the hot flow geometry in the spectral states when high frequency QPO are observed.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA

The Conservatives’ BME MPs may be game changers in the way we think about ethnic minority representation

It has long been assumed that the ethnicity of voters will translate into ethnicity of candidates; and that ethnicity of MPs will in turn improve the representation of BME interests in Westminster. But is this the case? Maria Sobolewska argues that the recent increase in BME candidates for the Conservative Party may be a ‘game changer’ in how we view these relationships and trends

Nature of the Extreme Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

In this proof-of-concept study we demonstrate that in a binary system mass can be transferred toward an accreting compact object at extremely high rate. If the transferred mass is efficiently converted to X-ray luminosity (with disregard of the classical Eddington limit) or if the X-rays are focused into a narrow beam then binaries can form extreme ULX sources with the X-ray luminosity of Lx>10^42 erg/s. For example, Lasota & King argued that the brightest known ULX (HLX-1) is a regular binary system with a rather low-mass compact object (a stellar-origin black hole or a neutron star). The predicted formation efficiencies and lifetimes of binaries with the very high mass transfer rates are large enough to explain all observed systems with extreme X-ray luminosities. These systems are not only limited to binaries with stellar-origin black hole accretors. Noteworthy, we have also identified such objects with neutron stars. Typically, a 10 Msun black hole is fed by a massive (10 Msun) Hertzsprung gap donor with Roche lobe overflow rate of 10^-3 Msun/yr (2600 MEdd). For neutron star systems the typical donors are evolved low-mass (2 Msun) helium stars with Roche lobe overflow rate of 10^-2 Msun/yr. Our study does not prove that any particular extreme ULX is a regular binary system, but it demonstrates that any ULX, including the most luminous ones, may potentially be a short-lived phase in the life of a binary star.Comment: ApJ - accepted (significant changes

Dialektolodzy na manowcach. O wpływie niemczyzny na gwary Warmii i Mazur

The article contains a critical analysis of the opinions of dialectologists studying the dialects of Warmia and Masuria. In their view, firmly established since the 1960s, the influence of the German language on the regions’ dialects was insignificant and superficial. The article recalls and studies the sources used in the compilation of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur, presents the linguistic material published therein. It poses a thesis that, although the language system of the studied dialect is Polish, the naming system comprising all fundamental spheres of life was shaped under a significant and versatile influence of German. Loanwords, semantic borrowings, replicas from the German language enter into numerous relationships of synonymy, hyponymy antonymy or hyperonymy with Polish words, creating complex and cohesive semantic fields within which the users of a dialect moved freely

Los poemas órficos teogónicos atribuyen a Linos. Notas sobre el Testimonio de Pausanias

I will discuss the connection between Linos and Orphics as it is outlined in the Description of Greece. Pausanias writes that Linos propagated in his songs the genealogy of the first deities of the Greek pantheon. According to Pausanias, this genealogy was similar to the one in Hesiod’s Theogony. Pausanias himself believed that the majority of Linos’ works were inauthentic. He was of the opinion that if Linos wrote anything, none of it has survived. However, no one has tried to explain why so many works were attributed to Linos. In my article I try to answer to this question.

Energy spectra of X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations in accreting black hole binaries

    Get PDF
We investigate the energy dependencies of X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations in black hole X-ray binaries. We analyze RXTE data on both the low- and high-frequency QPO. We construct the low-f QPO energy spectra, and demonstrate that they do not contain the thermal disk component, even though the latter is present in the time averaged spectra. The disk thus does not seem to participate in the oscillations. Moreover the QPO spectra are harder than the time averaged spectra when the latter are soft, which can be modeled as a result of modulations occurring in the hot plasma. The QPO spectra are softer than the time averaged spectra when the latter are hard. The absence of the disk component in the QPO spectra is true also for the high-frequency (hecto-Hz) QPO observed in black hole binaries. We compute the QPO spectra expected from the model of disk resonances.Comment: 4 pages, Proc. of IAU Symposium 238, "Black Holes from Stars to Galaxies - across the range of masses", Prague, Aug 200
