Modernization of Education in Egypt: The Liberal Movement Towards Dewey’s Ideas

This paper traces, from a historical perspective, the acceptance of the educational ideas of John Dewey (1859-1952) in Egypt in context of its earlier and ongoing efforts to modernize the education system. It first discusses the different political, educational, and social factors that might have facilitated the acceptance of Dewey‘s educational ideas in Egypt. Then it discusses the ways through which Dewey‘s educational ideas reached into Egypt, including establishment of European and American schools in Egypt, sending educational missions to Europe and the USA, and translation of works of western intellectuals into Arabic. It also discusses the adoption of Dewey‘s ideas by many Egyptian educationists. The study focuses on Al-Qabbani (1898-1963), the progressive thinker and Minister of Education in Egypt, and shows the extent to which his educational ideas agreed with Dewey‘s educational philosophy. Finally, the study explores the application of some of Dewey‘s progressive educational ideas in Egypt. Cet article retrace, de par le biais d‘une analyse historique, l‘acceptation des idées éducatives de John Dewey (1859-1952) en Égypte dans le but de moderniser l‘intégralité du système éducatif du pays. Il discute tout d‘abord les différents facteurs politiques, éducatifs et sociaux qui peuvent avoir facilités l‘acceptation de ces idées éducatives en Égypte. Il se concentre ensuite sur les différents chemins au travers desquels les idées de Dewey se sont insérées dans le contexte égyptien, tel que la création d‘écoles européennes et américaines, l‘envoi de missions éducatives en Europe et aux États- Unis et la traduction d‘écrits d‘auteurs occidentaux en langue arabe. L‘article discute également de l‘adoption des idées de Dewey de la part de beaucoup d‘éducateurs égyptiens. Il se concentre surtout sur l‘intellectuel progressiste et Ministre d‘Éducation Égyptien Al-Qabbani (1898-1963) et montre ses liens étroits avec la philosophie éducative de Dewey. En conclusion, cet écrit explore la mise en pratique de quelques unes des idées éducatives progressistes de Dewey dans le contexte égyptien

Ethnicity, Gender, and Occupational Choice in Two Toronto Schools

Using data from 811 respondents in two central Toronto schools with “mixed” social class composition but strong reputations for academic achievement, this article examines how ideal occupation and career indecision are linked to gender and ethnicity. Ethnic groups “of more recent arrival” show higher levels of ambition than Anglo-Canadians and Euro-Canadians. Females appear to have higher ambitions than males. À l’aide de données provenant de 811 répondants de deux écoles du centre de Toronto présentant un milieu “mixte” du point de vue des classes sociales, mais jouissant d’un solide réputation quant au rendement des élèves, les auteurs analysent comment la pro- fession idéale et l’indécision quant au choix d’une carrière sont reliées au genre et à l’ethnicité. Les groupes ethniques “arrivés plus récemment” font preuve de plus d’ambi- tion que les Anglo-Canadiens et les Euro-Canadiens. De plus, les jeunes filles semblent être plus ambitieuses que les garçons.

Citizenship Education and Liberal Democratic Change: The Egyptian Case

This paper explores citizenship education in Egypt in the context of its current experience in liberal democratic change, especially after the amendment of Egypt\u27s constitution, in March 2007, to include the principle of citizenship in its first article. The paper begins with exploring the meaning of citizenship, the relationship between citizenship and liberal democratic change and the emergence of citizenship education in traditional western democracies. Then it describes the Egyptian case in citizenship education with reference to its modern historical background. Finally it analyzes the effects of political, economic, and social circumstances in Egypt on citizenship education. The study shows that there is awareness of the importance of preparing good citizens for a new democratic society in Egypt; but citizenship education is still marginalized. Cet article explore l’enseignement de la citoyenneté en Egypte lors du changement démocratique libéral survenu après l’amendement de la Constitution égyptienne en mars 2007 qui a inclus les principes de la citoyenneté dans son premier article. Cet article commence tout d’abord par explorer ce que citoyenneté veut dire. Il cherche ensuite à analyser la relation qui existe entre citoyenneté et changement démocratique libéral et enfin à examiner l’émergence de l’enseignement dans les démocraties occidentales traditionnelles. Il décrit par la suite le cas de l’enseignement de la citoyenneté en Egypte tout en se basant sur ses origines historiques modernes. Il analyse enfin l’influence des circonstances politiques, économiques et sociales égyptiennes sur l’éducation de la citoyenneté. Cette étude démontre l’existence d’une réelle conscience quant à l’importance de préparer de bons citoyens pour l’avenir de la nouvelle société égyptienne, bien que cette éducation soit encore très marginalisée

EUSEDcollab: a network of data from European catchments to monitor net soil erosion by water

As a network of researchers we release an open-access database (EUSEDcollab) of water discharge and suspended sediment yield time series records collected in small to medium sized catchments in Europe. EUSEDcollab is compiled to overcome the scarcity of open-access data at relevant spatial scales for studies on runoff, soil loss by water erosion and sediment delivery. Multi-source measurement data from numerous researchers and institutions were harmonised into a common time series and metadata structure. Data reuse is facilitated through accompanying metadata descriptors providing background technical information for each monitoring station setup. Across ten European countries, EUSEDcollab covers over 1600 catchment years of data from 245 catchments at event (11 catchments), daily (22 catchments) and monthly (212 catchments) temporal resolution, and is unique in its focus on small to medium catchment drainage areas (median = 43 km(2), min = 0.04 km(2), max = 817 km(2)) with applicability for soil erosion research. We release this database with the aim of uniting people, knowledge and data through the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO)
