Faking like a woman? Towards an interpretative theorization of sexual pleasure.
This article explores the possibility of developing a feminist approach to gendered and sexual embodiment which is rooted in the pragmatist/interactionist tradition derived from G.H. Mead, but which in turn develops this perspective by inflecting it through more recent feminist thinking. In so doing we seek to rebalance some of the rather abstract work on gender and embodiment by focusing on an instance of 'heterosexual' everyday/night life - the production of the female orgasm. Through engaging with feminist and interactionist work, we develop an approach to embodied sexual pleasure that emphasizes the sociality of sexual practices and of reflexive sexual selves. We argue that sexual practices and experiences must be understood in social context, taking account of the situatedness of sex as well as wider socio-cultural processes the production of sexual desire and sexual pleasure (or their non-production) always entails interpretive, interactional processes
The effect of long-term high-fibre diets in diabetic outpatients
Diets containing large amounts of dietary fibre have been shown to be beneficial in improving diabetic control. We -investigated the practical aspects of administering a high-fibre diet to diabetic outpatients in Cape Town, using readily available, lowcost foodstuffs with a high dietary fibre content. Ten patients were followed up over a period of 9 months, for 3 months of which a high-fibre diet was prescribed. Although only 3 patients approached the projected dietary fibre intake, significant negative correlations were found between the mean plasma glucose changes and the dietary fibre increments (r = -0,704; P < 0,05) and between the mean serum triglyceride changes and the dietary fibre increments (r =-0,741; P < 0,05). These findings suggest that, were it not for poor dietary compliance, a high-fibre diet might result in significant improvement in diabetic control, and that education and motivation are of prime importance when making major changes to patients eating habits
Correlating the Energetics and Atomic Motions of the Metal-Insulator Transition of M1 Vanadium Dioxide
Materials that undergo reversible metal-insulator transitions are obvious
candidates for new generations of devices. For such potential to be realised,
the underlying microscopic mechanisms of such transitions must be fully
determined. In this work we probe the correlation between the energy landscape
and electronic structure of the metal-insulator transition of vanadium dioxide
and the atomic motions occurring using first principles calculations and high
resolution X-ray diffraction. Calculations find an energy barrier between the
high and low temperature phases corresponding to contraction followed by
expansion of the distances between vanadium atoms on neighbouring sub-lattices.
X-ray diffraction reveals anisotropic strain broadening in the low temperature
structure's crystal planes, however only for those with spacings affected by
this compression/expansion. GW calculations reveal that traversing this barrier
destabilises the bonding/anti-bonding splitting of the low temperature phase.
This precise atomic description of the origin of the energy barrier separating
the two structures will facilitate more precise control over the transition
characteristics for new applications and devices.Comment: 11 Pages, 8 Figure
Wisconsin Dairy Farmer Views onUniversity Research and Extension Programs
Over the last decade, the Program on Agricultural Technology Studies (PATS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has received a wide range of formal and informal comments from Wisconsin farmers regarding the direction of university research and extension programs. In an era of declining Extension budgets, increasing privatization, and a rapidly changing farm structure, the debate about where to focus scarce public resources takes on an added significance. Is there still an important role for land grant institutions to play in agriculture in the new century? If so, how can limited resources be targeted most effectively? What do farmers and other citizens want from the land grant system? In order to systematically solicit farmer feedback on these issues, a series of questions about research and extension programs at the University of Wisconsin was included in the PATS 1999 Wisconsin Dairy Farm Poll, a statewide survey sent to 1,600 randomly selected dairy farmers. While the results summarized below focus primarily on the responses of dairy farmers, similar questions were asked of other types of farms in a separate survey sent out at the same time.
