Heralded Generation of Ultrafast Single Photons in Pure Quantum States

We present an experimental demonstration of heralded single photons prepared in pure quantum states from a parametric downconversion source. It is shown that, through controlling the modal structure of the photon pair emission, one can generate pairs in factorable states and thence eliminate the need for spectral filters in multiple-source interference schemes. Indistinguishable heralded photons were generated in two independent spectrally engineered sources, and, by performing a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between them without spectral filters at a raw visibility of 94.4%, their purity was measured to be over 95%.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Letter from Bear, et al to Representative Burdick Regarding Property Laws, Undated

This undated resolution signed by Joe B. Bear, Adlai Stevenson, Alfred S. Smith, Jackson Dancing Bull, and Francis Stevenson concerns property issues related to the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation. The resolution states that the members of the Fort Berthold Americans Inc. do not agree with a law which would regard native property as a collective movement that denies property ownership. Nighttime resident supervision and education: results of a national survey of internal medicine residency program directors

    Get PDF
Over the past several years, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has issued new restrictions on resident duty hours while calling for increased supervision to ensure patient safety. To meet these requirements, some hospitals have hired overnight in-house hospitalist physicians, also called nocturnists, while others have continued a traditional model wherein a resident in-house can access a supervisor at home by phone as needed. This study examines the current state of internal medicine resident supervision and teaching at night.Christopher Bruti (Rush University Medical Center), Mathhew Tuck (Veterans Affairs Medical Center), Rebecca Harrison (Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine), Dustin Smith (Atlanta VA Medical Center), Michael Kisielewski (Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine), Jillian S. Targeting Survivin with YM155 (Sepantronium Bromide): A novel therapeutic strategy for paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia

    Get PDF
Despite aggressive chemotherapy, approximately one-third of children with acute myeloid leukaemia(AML) relapse. More effective treatments are urgently needed. Survivin is an inhibitor-of-apoptosis protein with key roles in regulating cell division, proliferation and apoptosis. Furthermore, high expression of Survivin has been associated with poor clinical outcome in AML. The Survivin suppressant YM155 (Sepantronium Bromide) has pre-clinical activity against a range of solid cancers and leukemias, although data in AML is limited. Therefore, we undertook a comprehensive pre-clinical evaluation of YM155 in paediatric AML. YM155 potently inhibited cell viability in a diverse panel of AML cell lines. All paediatric cell lines were particularly sensitive, with a median IC50 of 0.038 mu M. Cell cycle analyses demonstrated concentration-dependent increases in a sub-G1 population with YM155 treatment, suggestive of apoptosis that was subsequently confirmed by an increase in annexin-V positivity. YM155-mediated apoptosis was confirmed across a panel of 8 diagnostic bone marrow samples from children with AML. Consistent with the proposed mechanism of action, YM155 treatment was associated with down-regulation of Survivin mRNA and protein expression and induction of DNA damage

Mapping the Complete Reaction Path of a Complex Photochemical Reaction

We probe the dynamics of dissociating CS2 molecules across the entire reaction pathway upon excitation. Photoelectron spectroscopy measurements using laboratory-generated femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses monitor the competing dissociation, internal conversion, and intersystem crossing dynamics. Dissociation occurs either in the initially excited singlet manifold or, via intersystem crossing, in the triplet manifold. Both product channels are monitored and show that despite being more rapid, the singlet dissociation is the minor product and that triplet state products dominate the final yield. We explain this by consideration of accurate potential energy curves for both the singlet and triplet states. We propose that rapid internal conversion stabilises the singlet population dynamically, allowing for singlet-triplet relaxation via intersystem crossing and efficient formation of spin-forbidden dissociation products on longer timescales. The study demonstrates the importance of measuring the full reaction pathway for defining accurate reaction mechanisms

Planet Hunters. VI: An Independent Characterization of KOI-351 and Several Long Period Planet Candidates from the Kepler Archival Data

    Get PDF
We report the discovery of 14 new transiting planet candidates in the Kepler field from the Planet Hunters citizen science program. None of these candidates overlapped with Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) at the time of submission. We report the discovery of one more addition to the six planet candidate system around KOI-351, making it the only seven planet candidate system from Kepler. Additionally, KOI-351 bears some resemblance to our own solar system, with the inner five planets ranging from Earth to mini-Neptune radii and the outer planets being gas giants; however, this system is very compact, with all seven planet candidates orbiting ≲1\lesssim 1 AU from their host star. A Hill stability test and an orbital integration of the system shows that the system is stable. Furthermore, we significantly add to the population of long period transiting planets; periods range from 124-904 days, eight of them more than one Earth year long. Seven of these 14 candidates reside in their host star's habitable zone.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, Accepted to AJ (in press) (updated title from original astro-ph submission

Seeing the way: visual sociology and the distance runner's perspective

    Get PDF
Employing visual and autoethnographic data from a two‐year research project on distance runners, this article seeks to examine the activity of seeing in relation to the activity of distance running. One of its methodological aims is to develop the linkage between visual and autoethnographic data in combining an observation‐based narrative and sociological analysis with photographs. This combination aims to convey to the reader not only some of the specific subcultural knowledge and particular ways of seeing, but also something of the runner's embodied feelings and experience of momentum en route. Via the combination of narrative and photographs we seek a more effective way of communicating just how distance runners see and experience their training terrain. The importance of subjecting mundane everyday practices to detailed sociological analysis has been highlighted by many sociologists, including those of an ethnomethodological perspective. Indeed, without the competence of social actors in accomplishing these mundane, routine understandings and practices, it is argued, there would in fact be no social order
