Priapism, Ecstasy, and Marijuana: Is There a Connection?

    Get PDF
Priapism is a urological emergency with multiple aetiologies including drug induced. Currently, there have been no reports of priapism induced by the combination of ecstasy and marijuana. We speculated on the potential mechanisms for acute drug-induced priapism resulting from ingestion of these two common illicit drugs

Purpose: To identify potential antibacterial protein targets following exposure to Melastoma candidum extract. Methods: Plant extracts were prepared using sequential extraction method. Denaturing gel electrophoresis and MALDI TOF-TOF MS protein sequencing were used to identify differentialexpressed bacterial proteins. 96-well microplate method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) bio-autobiography and gaschromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were performed to determine the phytochemicals in the active fraction. Results: Five differentially expressed bacterial proteins (four from Escherichia coli and one from Staphylococcus aureus), were identified via proteomic approach. Among the bacterial proteins identified, glutamate decarboxylase, elongation factor-Tu and α-hemolysin are especially noteworthy, as they are implicated in critical bacterial pathways pertaining to survival in acidic environment, protein translation and virulence, respectively. Additionally, we tested and reported the minimum inhibition concentrations of different M. candidum fractions and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC-MS analysis of the active fraction. Conclusion: Glutamate decarboxylase, elongation factor-Tu and α-hemolysin represent potential antibacterial targets. Keywords: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Melastoma candidum, Glutamate decarboxylase, Elongation factor-Tu, α-Hemolysin, Protein expressio

Stabilization of single-electron pumps by high magnetic fields

We study the effect of perpendicular magnetic fields on a single-electron system with a strongly time-dependent electrostatic potential. Continuous improvements to the current quantization in these electron pumps are revealed by high-resolution measurements. Simulations show that the sensitivity of tunnel rates to the barrier potential is enhanced, stabilizing particular charge states. Nonadiabatic excitations are also suppressed due to a reduced sensitivity of the Fock-Darwin states to electrostatic potential. The combination of these effects leads to significantly more accurate current quantization

    Drivers influencing shared services adoption

    Get PDF
Organizations seeking improvements in their performance are increasingly exploring alternative models and approaches for providing support services; one such approach being Shared Services. Shared Services has the potential to provide positive and powerful impact to the organizations with the support of Information Systems (IS) as the platform for Shared Services application and implementation. Due to this situation, Shared Services is becoming one of the choices in IS area for researcher to conduct a research. Shared Services results a lot of positive outcomes especially improving on the organizations financial expenses. Although various studies have been identified in discussing about the benefits of Shared Services, drivers of Shared Services that influence its adoption have received little research attention. This paper has identified several drivers that influence organizations to adopt Shared Services. By using NVivo as a tool to analyze the content from selected journal articles, 5 drivers of Shared Services adoption were identified. This suggesting the strength and benefits in adopting shared service. By identifying the drivers, it could encourage the top management as the decision maker to implement Shared Services in their organization. Thus, this could lead to the business operation to operate more effectively

Determinant factors of cyberbullying: an application of theory of planned behavior

    Get PDF
Employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study aims to find determinant factors that have influence over individuals’ intention to cyberbully others. Along with the TPB’s main variables, including attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, in this research, the role of moral obligation, perceived threat of legal punishment and overall gain was also studied. Using a scenario-based questionnaire, the data were collected from 96 students in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. According to the results, subjective norms and overall gain reflected to be significant over cyberbullying intention, while the rest of variables did not reflect any significance. The impact of these determinants was not the same among females and males, which reflect gender differences matters in intention to cyberbully

    Superconductor-ferromagnet junction phase qubit

We propose a scheme for a phase qubit in an SIFIS junction, consisting of bulk superconductors (S), a proximity-induced ferromagnet (F), and insulating barriers (I). The qubit state is constituted by 0 and π\pi phase states of the junction, in which the charging energy of the junction leads to the superposition of the two states. The qubit is operated by the gate voltage applied to the ferromagnet, and insensitive to the decoherence sources existing in other superconducting qubits. We discuss a scalable scheme for qubit measurement and tunable two-qubit coupling.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
