    Landauer-B\"uttiker Study of the Anomalous Hall Effect

    We report on Landauer-B\"uttiker studies of anomalous Hall transport in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a magnetization provided by localized magnetic moments. Our system is described by a discretized tight-binding model in a four-terminal geometry. We consider both the case of magnetically disordered systems as well as ballistic transport in disorder-free systems with spatially homoge- neous magnetization. In the latter case we investigate both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetizations. We numerically establish a close connection between singularities in the density of states and peaks in the Hall conductance close to the lower band edge. Consistent with previous theoretical studies based on diagrammatic perturbation expansions, these peaks occur at Fermi energies where only the lower dispersion branch is occupied. Moreover, for large magnetization the Hall conductance is, along with the density of states, sup- pressed.     The Internet has become a mean by which individuals can exercise their right to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the freedom of association, which, both play a crucial role in supporting democracy and guaranteeing human rights. But, at the same time, it also has become a mean for human rights infringement such as privacy, discrimination of specific vulnerable groups, espionage, child pornography and prostitution, as well as the democratic destabilization. The fundamental rights are neither created, nor abrogated by any state or non-state actor, being attached to humans at their birth only by the fact of being humans. “All men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity.” These rights, recognized as universal, inalienable and indivisible, are supported by the International Bill of Human Rights, which comprises three main legal instruments: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The promotion and protection of all human rights and of democratic principles serves as an international minimum standard widely enforced.     Fast Quantum Computing with Buckyballs

    We have found that encapsulated atoms in fullerene molecules, which carry a spin, can be used for fast quantum computing. We describe the scheme for performing quantum computations, going through the preparation of the qubit state and the realization of a two-qubit quantum gate. When we apply a static magnetic field to each encased spin, we find out the ideal design for the preparation of the quantum state. Therefore, adding to our system a time dependent magnetic field, we can perform a phase-gate. The operational time related to a π\pi-phase gate is of the order of nsns. This finding shows that, during the decoherence time, which is proportional to μs\mu s, we can perform many thousands of gate operations. In addition, the two-qubit state which arises after a π\pi-gate is characterized by a high degree of entanglement. This opens a new avenue for the implementation of fast quantum computation.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Effects of immersed moonlets in the ring arc particles of Saturn

    Ring arcs are the result of particles in corotation resonances with nearby satellites. Arcs are present in Saturn and Neptune systems, in Saturn they are also associated with small satellites immersed on them. The satellite Aegaeon is immersed in the G~ring arc, and the satellites Anthe and Methone are embedded in arcs named after them. Since most of the population of the arcs is formed by μ\mum-sized particles the dissipative effects, such as the plasma drag and the solar radiation force, decrease the lifetime of the arcs. We analysed the effects of the immersed satellites on these arcs by computing the mass production rate and the perturbation caused by them in the arc particles. By comparing the lifetime of the particles and the mass production rate we concluded that Aegaeon, Anthe and Methone did not act as sources for their arcs. We took a step further by analysing a hypothetical scenario formed by an immersed moonlet of different sizes. As a result we found that regardless the size of the hypothetical moonlet (from about 0.10 km to 4.0 km) these moonlets will not act as a source. These arcs are temporary structures and they will disappear in a very short period of time

    Performance of Italian zeolitic tuffs and pozzolana in 2-chlorophenol removal from contaminated groundwater. Lab-scale experience

    The physical and chemical properties of zeolites and the availability of localized deposits of naturally occurring zeolitized tuffs and pozzolana, make them desirable for and applicable to the remediation of contaminated groundwater. This paper documents the results of a laboratory study to test the capacity of native Italian zeolites to remove 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) from water. Italian zeolitic tuff and pozzolana were characterized in terms of their chemical and structural properties and of their adsorption capacities. Moreover, the experimental activity investigated their adsorption behaviour: time and pH dependence of the adsorption process was evaluated. The results of the time-dependence adsorption study under a constantly stirred condition showed that the adsorption increases with a longer contact time for all samples; the highest adsorption occurred at pH=8 divided by 8.5. Due to the good removal efficiencies obtained, a column test simulating the condition of an in situ permeable reactive barrier was carried out, in order to estimate the removal kinetics and the long-term behaviour. The removal efficiencies reached values higher than 90%, even if some long-term performance worsening occurred, due to the progressive exhaustion of the adsorption sites. These experiments demonstrate the capacity of naturally occurring zeolites to remove 2-CP from water and the opportunity to make economic use of these native deposits for in situ groundwater remediation

    Embedded techniques for choosing the parameter in Tikhonov regularization

    This paper introduces a new strategy for setting the regularization parameter when solving large-scale discrete ill-posed linear problems by means of the Arnoldi-Tikhonov method. This new rule is essentially based on the discrepancy principle, although no initial knowledge of the norm of the error that affects the right-hand side is assumed; an increasingly more accurate approximation of this quantity is recovered during the Arnoldi algorithm. Some theoretical estimates are derived in order to motivate our approach. Many numerical experiments, performed on classical test problems as well as image deblurring are presented

    Methodology for predicting oily mixture properties in the mathematical modeling of molecular distillation

    A methodology for predicting the thermodynamic and transport properties of a multi-component oily mixture, in which the different mixture components are grouped into a small number of pseudo components is shown. This prediction of properties is used in the mathematical modeling of molecular distillation, which consists of a system of differential equations in partial derivatives, according to the principles of the Transport Phenomena and is solved by an implicit finite difference method using a computer code. The mathematical model was validated with experimental data, specifically the molecular distillation of a deodorizer distillate (DD) of sunflower oil. The results obtained were satisfactory, with errors less than 10% with respect to the experimental data in a temperature range in which it is possible to apply the proposed method.Fil: Gayol, Maria Fernanda.     Se reportan por primera vez en Argentina las tres especies de Oxycraspedus Kuschel (Belidae: Oxycoryninae) y se añaden a su distribución en Chile. Estos gorgojos son de interés debido a su asociación con el pehuén Araucaria araucana, una especie de gran interés en temas de conservación. Los datos sobre su distribución son valiosos para proteger la biodiversidad en áreas de la Patagonia. La distribución potencial de Oxycraspedus predicha por un modelo a partir de variables bioclimáticas, es coincidente, como se esperaba, con el rango geográfico de su planta huésped, la araucaria.The first records of the three known species of Oxycraspedus Kuschel (Belidae: Oxycoryninae) in Argentina are reported, and added to their known distribution in Chile. These weevils are of interest because of their association with the pehuén or monkey puzzle tree, Araucaria araucana, a species of conservation concern. Their distribution data are of value for the protection of biodiversity in natural areas of Patagonia. The potential distribution of Oxycraspedus, as predicted by a model using bioclimatic variables, is coincident as expected, with the geographic range of the araucaria host-plant.Fil: Ferrer, Maria Silvia.
