Documenting Student Life: Using Omeka To Connect Students To The University Archives

    Get PDF
Many institutional archives struggle to gain and maintain student participation in documenting the student experience. The history, images, and records of students and their various organizations are fundamental to the narrative of the university. Capturing the experiences of students and campus life is a difficult task as students create organizations, plan and attend events, and maintain a social media presence, all of which are rarely documented in university archives. At this institution, the Special Collections department wanted to increase students’ use of services and resources, and increase student donations to the archives to grow student-centered collections

Where should students store data after they have completed their Electronic Thesis or Dissertation (ETDs)? The MetaArchive Cooperative has created the ETD+ Toolkit as an approach to improving research output management. This session will cover best practices in data curation and digital longevity techniques that will help students and faculty identify and offset risks and threats to their digital research footprints. We will discuss what to do with the data, how to handle copyright, version control, data organization, file formatting and metadata as well as where should these things be stored

Using Institutional Repositories to Promote Scholarly Development and Undergraduate Research

    Get PDF
Employers have long been discouraged by the number of undergraduate students graduating without being adequately prepared to achieve their professional goals such as a career or graduate school. Hands-on experiences along with research and scholarship opportunities contribute to scholarly development and can increase an undergraduate student’s career options and will better prepare them for graduate school. Many students struggle with scholarly development, viewing their work as homework rather than scholarship and often do not view themselves as scholars. Providing preservation and access of undergraduate work in an institutional repository can help to alleviate these problem by archiving and promoting student research. In this paper we will discuss strategies for promoting and encouraging student’s scholarly and creative work through our institutional repository to support with the institution’s goals of student recruitment, retention and student success

State-It: Connecting Students to the Archives

    Get PDF
The University Archives Department at Indiana State University (ISU) assists faculty, students, and the public by providing access to and preservation of primary resources and ISU history. Despite the resources and services available, archival holdings are often underused and receive few donations from students and student organizations. These students are often unaware of the function and uses of the archives. To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives. This site houses digital archival materials, digital exhibits, and oral histories. STATE-IT also provides a quick and easy access point for students to contribute images, documents, and other historical items. This paper focuses on how creating an interactive component increases students’ motivation to contribute to and use the University Archives, providing a look into the past and highlighting their current experiences and perspectives as ISU students

IL and the IR: Synergies between the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy (IL) and the Institutional Repository (IR)

Examining the institutional repository (IR) through the lens of the ACRL Framework on Information Literacy for Higher Education provides fresh perspectives and opportunities for IR collection development priorities and outreach efforts. In this presentation, three IR managers will explore different ways in which the IR can work in tandem with information literacy (IL) efforts, including: how ingesting primary sources from the archive can spark new pedagogical opportunities; how the IR can be used to teach concepts related to scholarly communication such as peer review, copyright, author’s rights, etc.; and how the IR can showcase, disseminate, and preserve student work and induct them into the scholarly conversation as authors in their own right

Showcasing More and Increasing Impact : The Virtuous Cycle of IR Success

    Get PDF
Every institution wants an IR that showcases the full breadth of its works and drives significant impact for the academic interests on campus. In fact, this creates a virtuous cycle : more content leads to more readers and recognition, more collaborations, more students, and more funding, which in turn leads to more content. But how do you reach that level of success? And how do you sustain it? This talk answers these questions through two particular lenses on the IR: content population (“Showcasing More”) and impact realization (“Increasing Impact”). Digital Commons customer case studies and recent and upcoming product developments will highlight these two themes
