    The People\u27s Daily: A longitudinal content analysis of editorials from 1977-2010

    ABSTRACT The People\u27s Daily, the most widely circulated newspaper in China, has served as the central government\u27s mouthpiece for decades. While its importance and its coverage of specific events have been studied extensively, little research has examined how its coverage has changed through history. Understanding the evolution of the newspaper, however, requires determining whether any differences in coverage have occurred over time. This study aims to identify differences in topics, authorship, use of quotations, and critiques of the government as well as praise in editorials of the People\u27s Daily from 1977to 2010. By means of a longitudinal content analysis, it compares the frequency of use of aspects in 18 categories before and after 1989, a pivotal year in Chinese history. The results indicate government and party issues were fewer while other topics increased; government official authors were fewer while other author identities increased; and more quotations, more government criticism and more reforms were mentioned in the post-1989 period. These results indicate that the People\u27s Daily\u27s coverage did change significantly in many respects, although it is difficult to determine the causes of the changes--economic factors, reduced political control, social changes or globalization forces

    Indie encounters: exploring indie music socialising in China

    Indie music, a genre deeply rooted in rock and punk music, is renowned for its independence from major commercial record labels. It has emerged as a choice for music consumers seeking alternatives to mainstream popular music, catering to a niche music preference. The minority nature of indie music not only provides its lovers with a profound space for individual expression and a sense of collective belonging but also introduces other challenges into their social lives. Recently, the field of music sociology has proposed a more diverse perspective to observe and analyse the intricate role of music for individuals and society. In this context, regarding Chinese indie music lovers with niche music preferences, how their indie music practices integrate into their social lives and how they navigate their niche music tastes have become worthwhile topics of exploration. Drawing on interviews with 31 Chinese indie music lovers and extensive online ethnography, this thesis investigates how Chinese indie music lovers comprehend and engage with indie music, and how the power of indie music shapes them and their social behaviours. I employ the theoretical framework of ‘music in action’ (Hennion, 2001; DeNora, 2011, 2016) and symbolic interactionism (Mead, 1934; Goffman, 1959; Blumer, 1969) to examine the dynamic and multifaceted roles of indie music in the social lives of Chinese indie music lovers. I develop a concept of ‘music socialising’ to delve into several key aspects of music lovers’ social practices. I contend that through various forms of musical activities such as music selection, live music attendance, and digital practices, indie music lovers exhibit strategic and reflexive characteristics in their music practices. These practices actively contribute to constructing and maintaining self and identity, negotiating social ties, and forming and mediating collectivity within a broader social landscape. It is through these processes that the music practices of Chinese indie music lovers are endowed with meanings, thereby shaping their social reality. This thesis presents a rich and nuanced picture of the social experiences of Chinese indie music lovers, uncovering the transformative power of their indie music practices. It presents a compelling argument for the significance of music as a social agency, highlighting the complex interactions between music, individuals, and society. By bridging theoretical insights with rich empirical data, this thesis contributes to our understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions of music, offering fresh perspectives on the role of indie music in contemporary Chinese society

    Pick Planning Strategies for Large-Scale Package Manipulation

    Automating warehouse operations can reduce logistics overhead costs, ultimately driving down the final price for consumers, increasing the speed of delivery, and enhancing the resiliency to market fluctuations. This extended abstract showcases a large-scale package manipulation from unstructured piles in Amazon Robotics' Robot Induction (Robin) fleet, which is used for picking and singulating up to 6 million packages per day and so far has manipulated over 2 billion packages. It describes the various heuristic methods developed over time and their successor, which utilizes a pick success predictor trained on real production data.     A multiple-time-scale comparative study for the added value of magnetic resonance imaging-based radiomics in predicting pathological complete response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer

    ObjectiveRadiomics based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows potential for prediction of therapeutic effect to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC); however, thorough comparison between radiomics and traditional models is deficient. We aimed to construct multiple-time-scale (pretreatment, posttreatment, and combined) radiomic models to predict pathological complete response (pCR) and compare their utility to those of traditional clinical models.MethodsIn this research, 165 LARC patients undergoing nCRT followed by surgery were enrolled retrospectively, which were divided into training and testing sets in the ratio of 7:3. Morphological features on pre- and posttreatment MRI, coupled with clinical data, were evaluated by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis for constructing clinical models. Radiomic parameters were derived from pre- and posttreatment T2- and diffusion-weighted images to develop the radiomic signatures. The clinical-radiomics models were then generated. All the models were developed in the training set and then tested in the testing set, the performance of which was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Radiomic models were compared with the clinical models with the DeLong test.ResultsOne hundred and sixty-five patients (median age, 55 years; age interquartile range, 47–62 years; 116 males) were enrolled in the study. The pretreatment maximum tumor length, posttreatment maximum tumor length, and magnetic resonance tumor regression grade were selected as independent predictors for pCR in the clinical models. In the testing set, the pre- and posttreatment and combined clinical models generated AUCs of 0.625, 0.842, and 0.842 for predicting pCR, respectively. The MRI-based radiomic models performed reasonably well in predicting pCR, but neither the pure radiomic signatures (AUCs, 0.734, 0.817, and 0.801 for the pre- and posttreatment and combined radiomic signatures, respectively) nor the clinical-radiomics models (AUCs, 0.734, 0.860, and 0.801 for the pre- and posttreatment and combined clinical-radiomics models, respectively) showed significant added value compared with the clinical models (all P > 0.05).ConclusionThe MRI-based radiomic models exhibited no definite added value compared with the clinical models for predicting pCR in LARC. Radiomic models can serve as ancillary tools for tailoring adequate treatment strategies

    The Statistical Damage Constitutive Model of Longmaxi Shale under High Temperature and High Pressure

    AbstractIn the exploitation of shale gas in deep and ultradeep formations, the mechanical properties of shale change under the action of high temperature and pressure. High-temperature stimulation can effectively release the damage of water phase trapping, which was caused during the drilling and completion of hydraulic fracturing of shale gas reservoirs. In this paper, the experiments have twelve groups of shale samples (three samples per group) under four target temperatures, 25, 200, 400, and 600°C as well as the confining pressure set as 0 MPa, 15 MPa, and 30 MPa. The servo testing machine is used to perform triaxial compression tests on the shale specimens that have undergone high temperature. The porosity, permeability, and velocity are also obtained under different temperatures. A statistical constitutive model of shale after temperature thermal damage under triaxial compression is established. Based on the characteristics of the random statistical distribution of rock strength and strain strength theory, apply relevant knowledge of damage mechanics as well as consider the failure of the microprotocol and the nonlinear relationship between elastic modulus and temperature. According to the test results, the relationship between the mechanical parameters of the shale and the temperature is discussed. The parameters of the statistical constitutive model considering temperature thermal damage are given also; a comparison with the results of uniaxial compression experiments shows the rationality and reliability. This work not only enriches the theory of shale failure pattern but also contributes to the deep shale development at high temperature

    The Evolutionary Path of the Center of Gravity for Water Use, the Population, and the Economy, and Their Decomposed Contributions in China from 1965 to 2019

    Sustainable development is a hot issue in global research today. As a large developing country, China has increasingly prominent conflicts between water use, the population, and the economy, so it is necessary to solve the sustainable development issues represented by water use, the population, and the economy. To explore the evolutionary process for water use, the population, and the economy in China, we calculated the evolutionary path of the center of gravity for water use, the population, and the economy in China from 1965 to 2019 by using the center of gravity model, and we calculated the decomposed contributions of the evolutionary path of the center of gravity for water use, the population, and the economy in China from 1965 to 2019, which the six major areas in China contributed to, by using the center of gravity decomposed contributions model. The results show the following: (1) As a whole, the center of gravity cumulative yearly moving distance for water use was 835.77 km, and the center of gravity moving direction as well as angle were north by east, 18.95°. The center of gravity cumulative yearly moving distance for the population was 113.40 km, and the center of gravity moving direction as well as angle were south by west, 31.50°. The center of gravity cumulative yearly moving distance for the economy was 449.83 km, and the center of gravity moving direction as well as angle were south by east, 8.63°. (2) From the decomposed value contribution rate of the evolutionary path of the center of gravity in the latitude direction for water use, the population, and the economy in China from 1965 to 2019, which the six major areas in China contributed to, Northeast China contributed the most (42.26%, 34.09%, and 39.37%, respectively). The increasing proportion of total water use consumption in Northeast China most positively affected the evolutionary path of the center of gravity for water use in China, moving northwards from 1965 to 2019, and the decreasing proportion of the total population as well as gross regional product in Northeast China most negatively affected the evolutionary path of the center of gravity for the population and economy in China, moving southwards from 1965 to 2019
