Helium line detections from ELDWIM at 1.4 GHz
Helium line observations towards 11 Galactic positions using Westerbork
Synthesis Radio Telescope(WSRT) have been reported. These observations were
made towards nearby positions where already hydrogen lines were detected at
sufficiently high intensity(50mK) at 1.4 GHz. This approach gave a fair
chance for the detection of helium line as well, keeping in mind the relative
abundance(10%) of helium with respect to hydrogen. Care was also taken to avoid
the presence of HII regions along the line of sight so that the line emission
originates from the extended diffuse low density ionized component, ELDWIM of
the Galaxy. The observations have resulted in the detection of helium line
towards 5 positions out of 11 with signal to noise ratio(snr) 4. An
attempt has been made to associate detection/non-detection of helium line to
the presence of surrounding HII regions. A weighting scheme that accounts for
nearby( 500pc) HII regions, their distances and other factors produces
favourable results. It is seen from this weighting scheme that a higher weight
favours the detection of helium line while lower weight is associated with
non-detection. The idea is to correlate ionization of ELDWIM with the

A VLBA Search for a Stimulated Recombination Line from the Accretion Region in NGC1275
The radio source 3C84, in NGC1275, has a two sided structure on parsec
scales. The northern feature, presumed to be associated with a jet moving away
from the Earth, shows strong evidence for free-free absorption. The ionized gas
responsible for that absorption would be a source of detectable stimulated
recombination line emission for a wide range of physical conditions. The VLBA
has been used to search for the H65 hydrogen recombination line. The
line is only expected to be seen against the northern feature which contains a
small fraction of the total radio flux density. This spatial discrimination
significantly aids the search for a weak line. No line was seen, with upper
limits of roughly 15% of the continuum over a velocity range of 1486 km/s with
resolutions up to 6.6 km/s. In the absence of a strong radiation field, this
would imply that the free-free absorbing gas has a wide velocity width, is
moving rapidly relative to the systemic velocity, or is concentrated in a thin,
high density structure. All of these possibilities are reasonably likely close
to an AGN. However, in the intense radiation environment of the AGN, even
considering only the radiation we actually observe passing through the
free-free absorbing gas, the non-detection is probably assured by a combination

Development of an interface for an ultrareliable fault-tolerant control system and an electronic servo-control unit
The NASA Ames Research Center sponsors a research program for the investigation of Intelligent Flight Control Actuation systems. The use of artificial intelligence techniques in conjunction with algorithmic techniques for autonomous, decentralized fault management of flight-control actuation systems is explored under this program. The design, development, and operation of the interface for laboratory investigation of this program is documented. The interface, architecturally based on the Intel 8751 microcontroller, is an interrupt-driven system designed to receive a digital message from an ultrareliable fault-tolerant control system (UFTCS). The interface links the UFTCS to an electronic servo-control unit, which controls a set of hydraulic actuators. It was necessary to build a UFTCS emulator (also based on the Intel 8751) to provide signal sources for testing the equipment
Phonon and Electronic Non-radiative Decay of Excitons in Carbon Nanotubes
We investigate theoretically the rates of non-radiative decay of excited
semiconducting nanotubes by a variety of decay mechanisms and compare with
experimental findings. We find that the multi-phonon decay (MPD) of free
excitons is too slow to be responsible for the experimentally observed
lifetimes. However, MPD lifetimes of localized excitons could be 2-3 orders of
magnitude shorter. We also propose a new decay mechanism that relies on a
finite doping of nanotubes and involves exciton decay into an optical phonon
and an intraband electron-hole pair. The resulting lifetime is in the range of

Advanced launch system trajectory optimization using suboptimal control
The maximum-final mass trajectory of a proposed configuration of the Advanced Launch System is presented. A model for the two-stage rocket is given; the optimal control problem is formulated as a parameter optimization problem; and the optimal trajectory is computed using a nonlinear programming code called VF02AD. Numerical results are presented for the controls (angle of attack and velocity roll angle) and the states. After the initial rotation, the angle of attack goes to a positive value to keep the trajectory as high as possible, returns to near zero to pass through the transonic regime and satisfy the dynamic pressure constraint, returns to a positive value to keep the trajectory high and to take advantage of minimum drag at positive angle of attack due to aerodynamic shading of the booster, and then rolls off to negative values to satisfy the constraints. Because the engines cannot be throttled, the maximum dynamic pressure occurs at a single point; there is no maximum dynamic pressure subarc. To test approximations for obtaining analytical solutions for guidance, two additional optimal trajectories are computed: one using untrimmed aerodynamics and one using no atmospheric effects except for the dynamic pressure constraint. It is concluded that untrimmed aerodynamics has a negligible effect on the optimal trajectory and that approximate optimal controls should be able to be obtained by treating atmospheric effects as perturbations
A comprehensive educational approach to improving NCLEX‐RN pass rates
Background
Nurse educators strive to find the best educational methods to prepare students in their attempt to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX‐RN). The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of an online coaching program with Appreciative Advising and Emotional Intelligence education as combined educational strategies to improve student learning outcomes.
Methods
The study was conducted at a university in the Midwestern United States. The sample consisted of students in four graduating classes (2013, n = 15; 2014, n = 19; 2015, n = 18; and 2016, n = 17), who had followed supplemented program preparation in a prelicensure program. Electronic surveys were disseminated to determine satisfaction with student program supports through analysis of the mean overall average scoring of seven‐point Likert scale rates. NCLEX‐RN actual pass rates were reviewed to examine the quality of online coaching toward student preparation via a t test to compare the mean NCLEX‐RN pass rates before and after implementation.
Results
The students reported satisfaction with the additions of Appreciative Advising and Emotional Intelligence. NCLEX‐RN pass rates showed significant improvements with the combined program support additions.
Conclusion
The findings suggest that nursing schools that include student program support with an online coaching program can result in positive trends related to NCLEX‐RN pass rates
