    Performance Study of Hybrid Spread Spectrum Techniques

    This thesis focuses on the performance analysis of hybrid direct sequence/slow frequency hopping (DS/SFH) and hybrid direct sequence/fast frequency hopping (DS/FFH) systems under multi-user interference and Rayleigh fading. First, we analyze the performance of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS), slow frequency hopping (SFH) and fast frequency hopping (FFH) systems for varying processing gains under interference environment assuming equal bandwidth constraint with Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation and synchronous system. After thorough literature survey, we show that hybrid DS/FFH systems outperform both SFH and hybrid DS/SFH systems under Rayleigh fading and multi-user interference. Also, both hybrid DS/SFH and hybrid DS/FFH show performance improvement with increasing spreading factor and decreasing number of hopping frequencies

    Surgical skill assessment using motion texture analysis

    In this thesis, we propose a framework for automated assessment of surgical skills to expedite the manual assessment process and to provide unbiased evaluations with possible dexterity feedback. Evaluation of surgical skills is an important aspect in training of medical students. Current practices rely on manual evaluations from faculty and residents and are time consuming. Proposed solutions in literature involve retrospective evaluations such as watching the offline videos. It requires precious time and attention of expert surgeons and may vary from one surgeon to another. With recent advancements in computer vision and machine learning techniques, the retrospective video evaluation can be best delegated to the computer algorithms. Skill assessment is a challenging task requiring expert domain knowledge that may be difficult to translate into algorithms. To emulate this human observation process, an appropriate data collection mechanism is required to track motion of the surgeon's hand in an unrestricted manner. In addition, it is essential to identify skill defining motion dynamics and skill relevant hand locations. This Ph.D. research aims to address the limitations of manual skill assessment by developing an automated motion analysis framework. Specifically, we propose (1) to design and implement quantitative features to capture fine motion details from surgical video data, (2) to identify and test the efficacy of a core subset of features in classifying the surgical students into different expertise levels, (3) to derive absolute skill scores using regression methods and (4) to perform dexterity analysis using motion data from different hand locations.Ph.D

    Biometric identification is the recognition of an individual by means of their physical or behavioral characteristics. Iris recognition in past decade has become one of reliable & unique biometric identification. In this research the various iris recognition method such as segmentation & normalization are applied on the eye image of 320x280 dimensions is obtained from CASIA database. 1-D Gabor Filter is used for feature extraction for eyelid detection & enhancing the segmented iris image. Edge detection techniques such as canny, sobel & prewitt are used for obtaining the fine edges. Performance is calculated on various evaluation parameters such as PSNR & MSE value for these edge detection techniques. Result shows sobel has less PSNR & showing more accurate & better result as compare to canny & prewitt. Matching is done using hamming distance by calculating the bit difference of processed or original image

    Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging infectious disease caused by novel coronavirus and hence this pandemic has a great impact on the education system. Nursing students as part of the health team should know the coronavirus like other communicable diseases. Methods: A quantitative approach and cross-sectional survey research design used to assess the knowledge of Coronavirus among 145 nursing students of district Sirmaur selected through the convenient sampling technique. An online self-structured questionnaire used as a tool for data collection. Descriptive data analysis was done with SPSS (version 23).Results: The result of the study revealed that only 31.7% of students had good knowledge about COVID-19, and 68.3% had average knowledge. Conclusions: There is a need for intervention such as educational programs or pieces of training to educate about the pandemic and its prevention practices to undergraduate students to make our society more secure

We replicate Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) assessments, which provides both an overall and in-detail evaluation of basic suturing skills required for surgeons. Video analysis techniques are introduced that incorporate sequential motion aspects into motion textures. We also demonstrate significant performance improvements over standard bag-of-words and motion analysis approaches.
