A New Leadership Development Model for Nursing Education

    Get PDF
Background Leadership competency is required throughout nursing. Students have difficulty understanding leadership as integral to education and practice. A consistent framework for nursing leadership education, strong scholarship and an evidence base are limited. Purpose To establish an integrated leadership development model for prelicensure nursing students that recognizes leadership as a fundamental skill for nursing practice and promotes development of nursing leadership education scholarship. Method Summarizing definitions of nursing leadership, conceptualizing leadership development capacity through reviewing trends, and synthesizing existing leadership theories through directed content analysis. Discussion Nine leadership skills form the organizing structure for the Nursing Leadership Development Model. Leadership identity development is supported via dimensions of knowing, doing, being and context. Conclusion The Nursing Leadership Development Model is a conceptual map offering a structure to facilitate leadership development within prelicensure nursing students, promoting student ability to internalize leadership capacity and apply leadership skills upon entry to practic

Franz Liszt 1811-1886: putting the virtue into virtuosity

Nowadays when most people think of Franz Liszt it is as a virtuoso pianist who composed primarily piano music. Much of his other work and compositional effort has been completely obscured by his revolutionary way of playing and writing for the piano. This thesis aims to present an alternative view of Liszt as an artist who saw music as a means to do some good in the world. The introduction places Liszt within the social context of his life, describing attitudes to virtuosity at the start of his career and showing how the development of the piano and other nineteenth century technological advances facilitated the creation of his enormous reputation. The following five chapters explore Liszt’s religious and moral beliefs and how these were instrumental in his efforts to further the careers and improve the lives of others. Chapter 1 explores Liszt’s upbringing, his religious faith and early ambitions. His moral code is examined along with the principles that he adopted and by which he conducted himself in adulthood. Chapter 2 examines the support Liszt provided for Wagner, covering direct financial help, acquisition of patronage, political assistance in the matter of Wagner’s exile, and musical support through performances of Wagner’s works. Chapter 3 describes Liszt’s relationship with Hungary, and with Budapest in particular. Liszt’s efforts to raise money for relief of victims of the floods in Pest are mentioned. His role in the establishment of the Conservatory is outlined in more detail along with his continuing involvement. Chapter 4 discusses Liszt’s teaching methods, the students he attracted from around the world and the way they spread his message. Chapter 5 considers some examples of how Liszt was exploited and taken for granted by some of those who perhaps ought to have been more appreciative, and how Liszt dealt with these problems. The thesis concludes that much of Liszt’s musical activity, especially his unpaid work, has been largely obscured by his relatively short career as a professional pianist

An Appreciative Look: Examining the Development of Urban Youths\u27 Civic Identity In and Out of the Social Studies Classroom

Current trends in the United States show a decline in voter participation and other forms of political engagement (Torney-Putra, Wilkenfeld, & Barber, 2008). There is further evidence to suggest that an understanding of civic knowledge and behaviors that represent civic participation is even more abysmal for urban students including students with low economic status and minority groups (Kahne, 2009; Torrey-Putra, 2001). However, traditional discourse around the gaps and deficits faced by urban students fail to recognize the educational systems that limit the growth and development of marginalized youth and ignore the assets that urban youth possess (Irizarry, 2001; Landson-Billings, 2006; Kirkland, 2010). Therefore, this intrinsic, embedded case study using an appreciative inquiry lens within a critical and indigenous paradigm sought to explore the questions 1) What factors and experiences contribute to the development of civic identity according to urban students? and 2) How can social studies teachers help to facilitate the development of an empowered civic identity according to urban youth? An analysis of the findings led to the development of a conceptual model that emphasized ethic of care as an intervening condition that contributes to the central phenomenon defined as empowering uplift. Empowering uplift characterizes the participants\u27 sense of civic identity and is illustrated by participatory acts of civic engagement labeled as consequences of the central phenomenon in the model. Finally, the model includes strategies defined as authentic learning experiences that the participants suggested to help social studies teachers facilitate the development of active, empowered citizens in their classrooms

Studies on the hormonal events of pregnancy, particularly in relation to the spontaneous onset of labour

An increase in the plasma oestrogen:progesterone ratio precedes labour in sheep, and an increase in the saliva oestriol:progesterone ratio has recently been demonstrated in women prior to spontaneous term and preterm labour. Studies were undertaken to further investigate the hormonal changes of pregnancy, particularly in relation to the onset of labour, and ultrasound examinations were performed to determine whether fetal adrenal size correlates with maternal steroid hormone levels. Absorption of progesterone was also studied in pregnancy, with a view to the possible prevention of preterm labour in some women at a later date. A rise in the saliva oestriol:progesterone ratio, prior to labour, was found in 68% of 28 normal women, and a ratio above the 90th centile for the gestation was found in 47% of the 17 women who went into idiopathic preterm labour. On serial monthly ultrasound examinations fetal adrenal size increased linearly; there was no correlation between adrenal and hormonal measurements at a given gestation. Adrenal size decreased rapidly during the first six weeks of neonatal life. Maternal plasma oestrone, oestradiol, oestriol, progesterone, dehydroepiand-rosterone sulphate, sex hormone binding globulin, human chorionic gonadotrophin, human placental lactogen and prolactin, and saliva oestrogen and progesterone levels were measured fortnightly from 20 weeks gestation in 20 normal women. Levels were comparable with previous studies; no interrelationships of significant importance were detected. Hourly saliva cortisol levels were significantly increased in late pregnancy, but the diurnal variation was maintained. The increase in plasma and saliva cortisol levels was not caused by the increased corticosteroid binding globulin levels. Thus an increased oestriol:progesterone ratio in the majority of women prior to term and idiopathic preterm labour was demonstrated, but it was concluded that neither saliva oestriol and progesterone, nor fetal adrenal ultrasound measurements, would be helpful in the prediction of preterm labour, in practice

Development of a Breast Cancer Survivorship Care Toolkit

A breast cancer survivor’s journey does not end with treatment. After treatment, most breast cancer survivors go on to face many life-long physical and mental challenges caused by their cancer and treatment. Once active cancer treatment is completed, patients enter the next important step in cancer care, cancer survivorship. Cancer survivorship is a comprehensive approach to post-oncology management that promotes the best outcomes for survivors as they transition from oncology care to primary care; and new breast-cancer survivorship guidelines have emerged. Research suggests that primary care NPs’ lack of awareness of the current 2016 American Cancer Society/American Society of Clinical Oncology [ACS/ASCO] Breast Cancer Survivorship Care Guidelines impedes their ability to provide the best evidence-based care for breast cancer survivors. This DNP project was designed to develop a breast cancer survivorship toolkit based upon contemporary breast cancer survivorship guidelines as part of the ongoing effort to better inform primary care NPs of survivors’ needs and promote best-practices implementation

Development of Methodologies for the Estimation of Thermal Properties Associated with Aerospace Vehicles

A thermal stress analysis is an important aspect in the design of aerospace structures and vehicles such as the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley Research Center (NASA-LaRC). These structures are complex and are often composed of numerous components fabricated from a variety of different materials. The thermal loads on these structures induce temperature variations within the structure, which in turn result in the development of thermal stresses. Therefore, a thermal stress analysis requires knowledge of the temperature distributions within the structures which consequently necessitates the need for accurate knowledge of the thermal properties, boundary conditions and thermal interface conditions associated with the structural materials. The goal of this proposed multi-year research effort was to develop estimation methodologies for the determination of the thermal properties and interface conditions associated with aerospace vehicles. Specific objectives focused on the development and implementation of optimal experimental design strategies and methodologies for the estimation of thermal properties associated with simple composite and honeycomb structures. The strategy used in this multi-year research effort was to first develop methodologies for relatively simple systems and then systematically modify these methodologies to analyze complex structures. This can be thought of as a building block approach. This strategy was intended to promote maximum usability of the resulting estimation procedure by NASA-LARC researchers through the design of in-house experimentation procedures and through the use of an existing general purpose finite element software
