    The Use of Explosive Forming for Fastening and Joining Structural and Pressure Components

    Explosive expansion of tubes into tubesheets has been used for over 20 years in the fabrication and repair of shell and tube heat exchangers. The use of explosives to perform these expansions has offered several distinct advantages over other methods. First, the process is fast and economical and can be performed with minimal training of personnel. Secondly, explosive forming does not cause the deleterious metallurgical effects which often result from other forming operations. In addition, the process can be performed remotely without the need for sophisticated handling equipment. The expansion of tubes into tubesheets is only one of many possible fastening and joining applications for which explosive forming can be used to achieve highly successful results. The explosive forming process and where it has been used are described. In addition, some possible adaptations to other joining applications are identified and discussed

Everyone knows that President Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address just minutes from the Gettysburg College campus. This area is rich in history that Americans know.     Effect of Vibrational Excitation on the Theoretical Performance of the Stoichiometric Carbon-Oxygen Propellant System

    Accurate calculations to evaluate the performance of the stoichiometric carbon-oxygen propellant system have been carried out for nozzle flow with and without chemical reactions and with and without vibrational adjustment. The calculations show that, for frozen chemical flow, a lag of vibrational energy states at chamber conditions nearly doubles the reduction in I_(sp), as compared with flow in which complete vibrational equilibrium is maintained. On the other hand, lags in vibrational adjustment have practically no effect on the theoretical performance of hot propellant systems if chemical equilibrium is maintained during nozzle flow. The preceding conclusions are in agreement with the results on other propellant systems obtained previously by use of an approximate evaluation procedure

    Absorbable-susceptor joining of ceramic surfaces

    An assembly of ceramic surfaces particularly refractory metal oxides and carbides, abutting a thin sheet of metal susceptor material are placed in a chamber of an enclosure containing inert gas. An RF coil is activated by power supply to melt the susceptor and adjacent zones of the ceramic. Reactive gas such as oxygen or a carbonizing gas is then fed to the chamber and reacts with the susceptor to form compounds which disperse and dissolve in the zones. On cooling, a strong joint is formed. The susceptor may contain inner perforations and outer perforations to aid in distribution of heat

    The powered lift configurations under present development for STOL aircraft are the externally blown flap (EBF), involving direct jet impingement on the aircraft flaps, and the upper surface blown (USB), where the jet flow is attached on the upper surface of the wing and directed downwards. Towards the goal of developing scaling laws to predict unsteady loads imposed on the structural components of these STOL aircraft from small model tests, the near field fluctuating pressure behavior for the simplified cases of a round free cold jet and the same jet impinging on a flat plate was investigated. Examples are given of coherences, phase lags (giving convection velocities), and overall fluctuating pressure levels measured. The fluctuating pressure levels measured on the flat plate are compared to surface fluctuating pressure levels measured on full-scale powered-lift configuration models

    Algorithm for astronomical, point source, signal to noise ratio calculations

    An algorithm was developed to simulate the expected signal to noise ratios as a function of observation time in the charge coupled device detector plane of an optical telescope located outside the Earth's atmosphere for a signal star, and an optional secondary star, embedded in a uniform cosmic background. By choosing the appropriate input values, the expected point source signal to noise ratio can be computed for the Hubble Space Telescope using the Wide Field/Planetary Camera science instrument

    The Evolution of Hetergeneous "Clumpy Jets": A Parameter Study

    We investigate the role discrete clumps embedded in an astrophysical jet play on the jet's morphology and line emission characteristics. By varying clumps' size, density, position, and velocity, we cover a range of parameter space motivated by observations of objects such as the Herbig Haro object HH~34. We here extend the results presented in Yirak et al. 2009, including how analysis of individual observations may lead to spurious sinusoidal variation whose parameters vary widely over time, owing chiefly to interacts between clumps. The goodness of the fits, while poor in all simulations, are best when clump-clump collisions are minimal. Our results indicate that a large velocity dispersion leads to a clump-clump collision-dominated flow which disrupts the jet beam. Finally, we present synthetic emission images of H-α\alpha and [SII] and note an excess of [SII] emission along the jet length as compared to observations. This suggests that observed beams undergo earlier processing, if they are present at all.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

    Regional gray matter correlates of vocational interests.

    BackgroundPrevious studies have identified brain areas related to cognitive abilities and personality, respectively. In this exploratory study, we extend the application of modern neuroimaging techniques to another area of individual differences, vocational interests, and relate the results to an earlier study of cognitive abilities salient for vocations.FindingsFirst, we examined the psychometric relationships between vocational interests and abilities in a large sample. The primary relationships between those domains were between Investigative (scientific) interests and general intelligence and between Realistic ("blue-collar") interests and spatial ability. Then, using MRI and voxel-based morphometry, we investigated the relationships between regional gray matter volume and vocational interests. Specific clusters of gray matter were found to be correlated with Investigative and Realistic interests. Overlap analyses indicated some common brain areas between the correlates of Investigative interests and general intelligence and between the correlates of Realistic interests and spatial ability.ConclusionsTwo of six vocational-interest scales show substantial relationships with regional gray matter volume. The overlap between the brain correlates of these scales and cognitive-ability factors suggest there are relationships between individual differences in brain structure and vocations
