Following the Roots of Oregon Wine

Terroir is a French term widely used in wine circles to mean “the taste of the place.” The terroir of Oregon wine combines environmental and human elements to produce distinguishing flavors and reveals the histories of grape growers and winemakers in the state. A new archive at Linfield College, the Oregon Wine History Archive (OWHA), collects that history and makes it available to researchers and the public. Library professionals Rachael Cristine Woody and Rich Schmidt tell the story of OWHA’s origins and mission, which is to document all aspects of the wine industry by collecting and preserving historical materials such as photographs, diaries, planting and tasting notes, wine recipes, legislative records, and even bottles of wine. Over a dozen wineries, vineyards, individuals, and organizations have contributed to the collection —many of the area’s winemakers are committed to ongoing contributions to document Oregon wine’s past, present, and future terroir

Integrating Social and Emotional Learning into Language Arts Classrooms Through Diverse Young Adult Literature

This paper discusses the growing integration of social and emotional learning (SEL) in high schools. The project provides an explanation of why SEL should be integrated into classroom instruction, specifically focusing on the language arts classroom. The included teaching guide provides six lessons for integrating SEL in the language arts classroom using diverse young adult literature

In-depth case study of Australian seating service experience: stakeholders\u27 perspectives

The in-depth case study explores the Australian seating service experience from four stakeholders’ perspectives. To capture essential case study data, a qualitative approach collected the seating service experiences of eleven consumers, five care providers, 28 prescribing clinicians and 16 vendors. Sixty participants shared their experiences via an in-depth interview process of procuring specialised wheelchair-seating technology within the Australian seating service sector. The in-depth interviews were recorded, transcribed, and member-checked. The interview data builds on scant evidence of the seating service as experienced in Australia

Self-reported empathy levels in undergraduate occupational therapy students.

Relevence to exploring Occupational therapy role transitions and processes: The skill of establishing an empathetic therapeutic relationship in collaboration with one’s clients is a valued professional competency. To prepare occupational therapy students for professional practice, aspects of empathy awareness should be explored early in their undergraduate education. Raising students’ awareness of empathy and transforming this into professional competency for building empathetic relationships requires time. Occupational therapy undergraduates should explore aspects of empathy, both theoretically and in practice at all levels, to ensure these developing professionals can build empathic therapeutic relationships in practice. Aim: This research was undertaken to determine if students in four different years of study in occupational therapy at an Australian university differed in self-reported levels of empathy

Integrating Research-Based Learning into the Undergraduate Curriculum: Challenges and Solutions

Integrating undergraduate research into introductory level courses can improve student accessibility, inclusion, and retention. Herein, we discuss two one-on-one research projects that are being scaffolded into the undergraduate curriculum. We will describe the design and application of CUREs (course-based undergraduate research experiences) in forensic biology as well as physics and astronomy degree programmes. The forensic biology CURE includes trace evidence analysis and models the experimental methods, techniques, and instrumentation students will use in their future careers. In the Eclipsing Binaries CURE, students are introduced to coding and computational physics through modelling spectroscopic and photometric data. The lessons learned through scaling up these interdisciplinary models can apply to other fields of study

Quality of Life among Cancer Survivors: Comparison of Multiple Cancers Using iCaRe2

Background: The number of cancer survivors continues to increase due to dramatic improvements in cancer treatment, accounting for approximately 5% of the entire population. As cancer survivors continue to live longer, it is important to understand their quality of life (QoL) in order to maximize supportive care efforts. Objectives: In this study, the quality of life (QoL) among patients with different types of cancer was examined. The objectives were to: 1) compare patient-reported outcome measures of QoL using the Short-Form (SF-36) Health Survey scores among patients of different cancer types and 2) identify demographic, oncologic, and clinical factors that are associated with SF-36 QOL scores. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected data from a multi-center cancer registry data collected between January 2007 and February 2020. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify demographic and clinical factors that are associated with SF-36 Physical Component Score (PCS) and Mental Component Score (MCS). Findings: Both mental and physical aspects of QoL were affected in all cancer patients, regardless of the type, prognosis, and time since diagnosis and treatment. Individual, socioeconomic, disease, and treatment-related variables were associated with QoL among different cancer populations and should be addressed as part of shared treatment decision-making
