Services like tourism have to use the possibilities of modern advertising. In particular, these include the World Wide Web (WWW). This platform brings its products and services directly to the customers. To place the information about a region and its tourist offer in optimal manner requires exact definition of elements in the Web based tourist information system (WETIS) and their presentation. We discuss the elements and their integration in other services, the data structures and types, maps and their interactivity. Furthermore, we present tourism related data of selected Slovakian villages and cities. Finally, we give a report regarding our demonstration web page and future development. The usual tourist information on the web usually relates to the most interesting historical or cultural sights in the region and is marketing oriented. In this way the full image of history and beauty of the characteristic towns and villages is usually missed. Our intention was - in cooperation with the Geotourism students of the Institute if Geotourism - to map also these features of Eastern Slovakia and of the NE Carpathians. As the web is to serve mainly the tourist community, the map connects to useful information on various facilities available at the given locality. The detailed photo-documentation makes it possible e.g. also to see each traditional house. This is interesting as the number of these houses is decreasing. They are replaced by modern buildings, which lack the regional and local flavour.

The internet is an unlimited growing and most comfortable information and communication base. In this context, web portals on the internet play an important role created for combining communication facilities and information data bases. An increasing number of portals involve web-based map applications to integrate geographic information for the representation of economical and other records. Web-based map applications are typically designed in a client-server architecture. Different solutions exist using especially HTML and JavaScript, Flash or Java applets. We discuss these possibilities and point out an alternative solution. Particularly, we show how to use Java Applet Technology and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) in this field. Finally, we report about our results as a complete, flexible map service solution which is available on the internet. An adapted kind of solution will be used by a geo-based marketing portal for offering information about the economic situation, social and cultural aspects and natural facts of regions to support joint-ventures inside the European Union

Services like tourism have to use the possibilities of modern advertising and data presentation. In particular, these includethe World Wide Web (WWW). This platform brings its products and services directly to the customers. To place the information abouta region and its tourist offer in optimal manner, requires an exact definition of elements in the planned tourist info systems and theirpresentation. WETIS is the acronym of the “Web based tourist information system”.The WETIS elements and their integration into other services, the data structures and types, maps and their interactivityare considered. Furthermore, the paper presents tourism related data of selected Slovakian villages and cities. Finally, a reportregarding the demonstration web page and its future development is given.Usually, the tourist information systems on the web relate to the most interesting historical or cultural sights in the region. In thisway, the beauty of the many towns and villages is not appreciable and thus tend to be left out of tourist programmes. In order to fillthe gap, a project was initiated at the Institute of Geotourism, where students cooperated in mapping the actual situation in the fieldand gradually covering all the villages and cities of the region of East Slovakia. The project is still an ongoing project and the data upload is still incomplete. The WETIS contains useful information on a givenlocality. The detailed photo-documentation makes it possible to see each building of interest at a given locality. In order to avoidexcessive data load for the WETIS users, the detailed data interesting only for professionals are available only on demand
