Spectroscopy of the bright optical counterparts of X-ray sources in the direction of M 31. II
A recent survey of the Local Group spiral galaxy M 31 with XMM-Newton yielded
a large number of X-ray sources. This is the second in a series of papers with
the aim of identifying the optical counterparts of these X-ray sources. We have
obtained optical spectra for 21 bright optical counterparts of 20 X-ray sources
in the direction of M 31, using the 1.3-m Skinakas telescope in Crete, Greece.
For 17 of the 20 X-ray sources, we have identified the optical counterpart as a
normal late type star (of type F or later) in the foreground (i.e. in the Milky
Way). For two more sources there were two possible optical counterparts in each
case, while two more objects have X-ray properties that are not compatible with

Interval Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the Management of Acute Biliary Pancreatitis
The timing of laparoscopic cholecystectomy following
an attack of acute biliary pancreatitis is controversial.
The traditional approach of interval
cholecystectomy has been challenged recently. The
present study was designed to evaluate the benefits
of interval laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients
with mild acute pancreatitis (Ranson less than 3).
Nineteen patients with mild pancreatitis underwent
ultrasonographic evaluation to confirm the biliary
etiology. ERCP was performed in all patients on the
first available endoscopy list, and endoscopic sphincterotomy
was performed in two patients with calculi
or dilated common bile duct on ultrasonographic
examination. Medical treatment was administered
and laparoscopic cholecystectomy was scheduled
after 8â12 weeks to allow the inflammatory process
to settle. There were no recurrent attacks of pancreatitis
during this period. The degree of difficulty of
the laparoscopic procedure was assessed by the presence
of adhesions to the gallbladder area, difficulty
of dissection in the Calot's triangle, intraoperative
bleeding and the need for a drain. Six patients
(31.5%) had severe adhesions, difficult dissection of
the cystic duct and artery, bleeding and prolonged
operating time. In two of these patients (10.5%) the
procedure was converted to open cholecystectomy.
In conclusion, our results suggest that postponing
laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute pancreatitis
patients is not advantageous surgically and does
not justify the risk of further morbidity caused by
the gallbladder disease
Radio Luminosities and Classificatory Criteria of BL Lacertae Objects
Using the sample of radio selected BL Lacertae objects (RBLs) and X-ray
selected BL Lacertae objects (XBLs) presented by Sambruna et al. (1996), we
calculated the luminosities of radio, optical and X-ray of each source and made
the statistical analysis among the luminosities at different wave-bands,
broad-band spectral indices from radio to X-ray () and peak
frequencies (). Our results are as follows: (i) there is a positive
correlation between radio luminosity and and a
negative correlation between and . High-energy peak BL Lacs
(HBLs) and low-energy peak BL Lacs (LBLs) can be distinguished very well, the
dividing lines are probably those of (erg/sec) and
(or )0.75 for - plot and
those of (erg/sec) and for the
- plot; (ii) there is a weak positive correlation between
optical luminosity and and a negatively weak
correlation between and ; (iii) there is no correlation
between X-ray luminosity and or between and
. From our analysis, we find that synchrotron radiation is the main

Baseline elevation and reduction in cardiac electrical instability assessed by quantitative T-wave alternans in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy treated with vagus nerve stimulation in the AspireSR E-36 trial
Objective: Reports of cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac pathology at postmortem examination of patients with epilepsy suggest a possible cardiac component of risk for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). T-wave alternans (TWA) is an established marker of cardiac electrical instability and risk for sudden death in patients with cardiovascular disease. We determined the TWA level before vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) system implantation and subsequently the effect of VNS on TWA in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
Methods: Patients (n = 28) from the Seizure Detection and Automatic Magnet Mode Performance Study (E-36), a clinical trial of the AspireSR (R) VNS Therapy System (R) (NCT01325623), were monitored with ambulatory electrocardiograms (ECGs) similar to 2 weeks before de novo VNS system implantation and following 2- to 4-week VNS titration during a protocol-specified 3- to 5-day epilepsy monitoring unit stay with concurrent EEG/ECG recordings. The TWA level was assessed interictally by the Modified Moving Average (MMA) method.
Results: At preimplantation baseline, TWA was elevated above the 47-mu V abnormality cutpoint in 23 (82%) patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. In 16 (70%) patients, TWA level was reduced during VNS treatment to <47 mu V, thereby converting positive TWA test results to negative. Peak TWA level in all 28 patients improved (group mean, 43%, from 72 +/- 4.3 to 41 +/- 2.3 mu V; p < 0.0001). Vagus nerve stimulation was not associated with reduced heart rate (77 +/- 1.4 to 75 +/- 1.4 beats/min; p = 0.18). Heart rate variability was unchanged.
Significance: These findings suggest significant interictal cardiac electrical instability in this population of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and suggest that VNS may be a novel approach to reducing risk
Reinventing College Physics for Biologists: Explicating an epistemological curriculum
The University of Maryland Physics Education Research Group (UMd-PERG)
carried out a five-year research project to rethink, observe, and reform
introductory algebra-based (college) physics. This class is one of the Maryland
Physics Department's large service courses, serving primarily life-science
majors. After consultation with biologists, we re-focused the class on helping
the students learn to think scientifically -- to build coherence, think in
terms of mechanism, and to follow the implications of assumptions. We designed
the course to tap into students' productive conceptual and epistemological
resources, based on a theoretical framework from research on learning. The
reformed class retains its traditional structure in terms of time and
instructional personnel, but we modified existing best-practices curricular
materials, including Peer Instruction, Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, and
Tutorials. We provided class-controlled spaces for student collaboration, which
allowed us to observe and record students learning directly. We also scanned
all written homework and examinations, and we administered pre-post conceptual
and epistemological surveys. The reformed class enhanced the strong gains on
pre-post conceptual tests produced by the best-practices materials while
obtaining unprecedented pre-post gains on epistemological surveys instead of

Obscuration in the Host Galaxies of Soft X-ray Selected Seyferts
We define a new sample of 96 low-redshift (z<0.1), soft X-ray selected
Seyferts from the catalog of the Einstein Slew Survey (Elvis etal. 1992,
Plummer et al. 1994). We probe the geometry and column depth of obscuring
material in the host-galaxy disks using galaxian axial ratios determined mainly
from the Digitized Sky Survey. The distribution of host-galaxy axial ratios
clearly shows a bias against edge-on spirals, confirming the existence of a
geometrically thick layer of obscuring material in the host-galaxy planes. Soft
X-ray selection recovers some of the edge-on objects missed in UV and visible
surveys but still results in 30% incompleteness for Type 1's. We speculate that
thick rings of obscuring material like the ones we infer for these Seyferts
might be commonly present in early type spirals, sitting at the Inner Lindblad

Multi-transmission-line-beam interactive system
We construct here a Lagrangian field formulation for a system consisting of
an electron beam interacting with a slow-wave structure modeled by a possibly
non-uniform multiple transmission line (MTL). In the case of a single line we
recover the linear model of a traveling wave tube (TWT) due to J.R. Pierce.
Since a properly chosen MTL can approximate a real waveguide structure with any
desired accuracy, the proposed model can be used in particular for design
optimization. Furthermore, the Lagrangian formulation provides for: (i) a clear
identification of the mathematical source of amplification, (ii) exact
expressions for the conserved energy and its flux distributions obtained from
the Noether theorem. In the case of uniform MTLs we carry out an exhaustive
analysis of eigenmodes and find sharp conditions on the parameters of the
system to provide for amplifying regimes
