A classical Over Barrier Model to compute charge exchange between ions and one-optical-electron atoms
In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between
one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at
low-to-medium impact velocities (v/v_e <= 1) working on a modification of an
already developed classical Over Barrier Model (OBM) [V. Ostrovsky, J. Phys. B:
At. Mol. Opt. Phys. {\bf 28} 3901 (1995)], which allows to give a
semianalytical formula for the cross sections. The model is discussed and then
applied to a number of test cases including experimental data as well as data
coming from other sophisticated numerical simulations. It is found that the
accuracy of the model, with the suggested corrections and applied to quite
different situations, is rather high.Comment: 12 pages REVTEX, 5 EPSF figures, submitted to Phys Rev
Microturbulence studies in RFX-mod
Present-days Reversed Field Pinches (RFPs) are characterized by quasi-laminar
magnetic configurations in their core, whose boundaries feature sharp internal
transport barriers, in analogy with tokamaks and stellarators. The abatement of
magnetic chaos leads to the reduction of associated particle and heat transport
along wandering field lines. At the same time, the growth of steep temperature
gradients may trigger drift microinstabilities. In this work we summarize the
work recently done in the RFP RFX-mod in order to assess the existence and the
impact upon transport of such electrostatic and electromagnetic
microinstabilities as Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG), Trapped Electron Modes
(TEM) and microtearing modes.Comment: Work presented at the 2010 Varenna workshop "Theory of Fusion

Random matrix theory within superstatistics
We propose a generalization of the random matrix theory following the basic
prescription of the recently suggested concept of superstatistics. Spectral
characteristics of systems with mixed regular-chaotic dynamics are expressed as
weighted averages of the corresponding quantities in the standard theory
assuming that the mean level spacing itself is a stochastic variable. We
illustrate the method by calculating the level density, the
nearest-neighbor-spacing distributions and the two-level correlation functions
for system in transition from order to chaos. The calculated spacing
distribution fits the resonance statistics of random binary networks obtained
in a recent numerical experiment.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure
A semi-classical over-barrier model for charge exchange between highly charged ions and one-optical electron atoms
Absolute total cross sections for electron capture between slow, highly
charged ions and alkali targets have been recently measured. It is found that
these cross sections follow a scaling law with the projectile charge which is
different from the one previously proposed basing on a classical over-barrier
model (OBM) and verified using rare gases and molecules as targets. In this
paper we develop a "semi-classical" (i.e. including some quantal features) OBM
attempting to recover experimental results. The method is then applied to
ion-hydrogen collisions and compared with the result of a sophisticated
quantum-mechanical calculation. In the former case the accordance is very good,
while in the latter one no so satisfactory results are found. A qualitative
explanation for the discrepancies is attempted.Comment: RevTeX, uses epsf; 6 pages text + 3 EPS figures Journal of Physics B

On the mutual effect of ion temperature gradient instabilities and impurity peaking in the reversed field pinch
The presence of impurities is considered in gyrokinetic calculations of ion
temperature gradient (ITG) instabilities and turbulence in the reversed field
pinch device RFX-mod. This device usually exhibits hollow Carbon/Oxygen
profiles, peaked in the outer core region. We describe the role of the
impurities in ITG mode destabilization, and analyze whether ITG turbulence is
compatible with their experimental gradients.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Plasma Phys.

The probability density function tail of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the strongly non-linear regime
An analytical derivation of the probability density function (PDF) tail
describing the strongly correlated interface growth governed by the nonlinear
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation is provided. The PDF tail exactly coincides with a
Tracy-Widom distribution i.e. a PDF tail proportional to , where is the the width of the interface. The PDF tail is
computed by the instanton method in the strongly non-linear regime within the
Martin-Siggia-Rose framework using a careful treatment of the non-linear
interactions. In addition, the effect of spatial dimensions on the PDF tail
scaling is discussed. This gives a novel approach to understand the rightmost
PDF tail of the interface width distribution and the analysis suggests that
there is no upper critical dimension.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
On the Convergence of the WKB Series for the Angular Momentum Operator
In this paper we prove a recent conjecture [Robnik M and Salasnich L 1997 J.
Phys. A: Math. Gen. 30 1719] about the convergence of the WKB series for the
angular momentum operator. We demonstrate that the WKB algorithm for the
angular momentum gives the exact quantization formula if all orders are summed.Comment: latex, 9 pages, no figures, to be published in Journal of Physics A:

Scaffold Optimisation of Tetravalent Antagonists of the Mannose Binding Lectin
Antagonists of mannose binding lectin (MBL) have shown a protective role against brain reperfusion damage after acute ischemic stroke. Here we describe the design and streamlined synthesis of glycomimetic MBL antagonists based on a new tetravalent dendron scaffold. The dendron was developed by optimisation of a known polyester structure previously demonstrated to be very efficient for ligand presentation to MBL. Replacement of a labile succinyl ester bond with a more robust amide functionality, use of a longer and more hydrophilic linker, fast modular synthesis and orthogonal functionalisation at the focal point are the main features of the new scaffold. The glycoconjugate constructs become stable to silica gel chromatography and to water solutions at physiological pH, while preserving water solubility and activity in an SPR assay against the murine MBL-C isoform. Higher-order constructs were easily assembled, as demonstrated by the synthesis of a 16-valent dendrimer, which leads to two orders of magnitude increase in activity over the tetravalent version against MBL-C
About the parabolic relation existing between the skewness and the kurtosis in time series of experimental data
In this work we investigate the origin of the parabolic relation between
skewness and kurtosis often encountered in the analysis of experimental
time-series. We argue that the numerical values of the coefficients of the
curve may provide informations about the specific physics of the system
studied, whereas the analytical curve per se is a fairly general consequence of
a few constraints expected to hold for most systems.Comment: To appear in Physica Script
