Applying FRBR model to bibliographic works on Al-Quran

    Get PDF
This study explores the feasibility of applying the object-oriented Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model to MARC-based bibliographic records on the Al-Quran. Based on the content analysis of 127 MARC-based bibliographic records on Al-Quran from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) OPAC system, this paper reports on the process of mapping FRBR entities to set of works on Al-Quran. The attributes of the bibliographic works in the MARC records were identified and grouped according to the FRBR entities. The findings suggest that, overall, most of the MARC-based bibliographic records on Al-Quran were sufficient to represent the FRBR model. However, several issues were identified as affecting the process of creating entity-relationship model for โ€œFRBRizingโ€ bibliographic works on Al-Quran. These include inconsistencies in romanizing records in Arabic scripts, difficulties in identifying complex works, missing fields for subject headings, and missing fields for record-object relationship identification. Thus, a major conclusion drawn is that the quality of MARC records is an important aspect in ensuring the bibliographic records are having complete, correct, and reliable data for FRBRization process

Metadata interoperability requirements for aggregating Islamic manuscript bibliographic records

The advancement in ICT has facilitated the access to rare, valuable, Islamic heritage resources such as manuscripts. Efforts to preserve and disseminate information about precious Islamic manuscripts have been evidenced through initiatives such as digital library projects and online catalogs. Accessibility to Islamic manuscripts housed in various repositories in institutions around the world can be enhanced through the creation of a central gateway interface. This requires the aggregation of bibliographic records surrogating the manuscripts. However, metadata interoperability has been found to be an important determinant in successful records aggregation. This paper discusses factors affecting metadata interoperability among various repositories housing Islamic manuscript from around the world. It also proposes to investigate how library professionals and users view metadata standards, and the issues associated with metadata interoperability in order to establish a shareable metadata for Islamic manuscripts

Cataloguer Acceptance on Cataloguing Module in Open-Source Integrated Library System in Academic Library in Malaysia

This paper aims to identify the acceptance of cataloguers on cataloguing modules in the Open-Source Integrated Library System in an academic library in Malaysia. The research design adopted for this study is descriptive research surveys. This study involved cataloguers in the academic university library in Malaysia that have used Koha as their open-source software since 2013. The survey used an online questionnaire distributed via email to all cataloguers in the selected libraries. The questionnaire comprises questions related to acceptance of module features and module usability on the cataloguing module. The 5-point Likert scale is used to measure the cataloguer acceptance of the cataloguing module, and the data were analysed using SPSS. The findings conclude that the majority of the cataloguers in academic libraries in Malaysia use open-source integrated library system similar to this study, Koha, and have entirely accepted the use of cataloguing module in terms of usability and features as the majority of the data reported on agreement of the user compared to a minority of disagreement. The findings of this study will encourage other researchers to do other studies on the usability of other modules in the open-source system that might improve the acceptance of open-source software

An investigation of Arabic-Malay translation: problems and issues

    Get PDF
The aim of this research paper is to look at the various issues that may arise with Arabic translations and to find possible solutions. The translation is a delicate and subtle process, and some important issues need to be taken into account. However, translation gets more difficult from Malay to the Arabic language. Consequently, a translator must have the critical linguistic knowledge and skills in undertaking both the surface and underlying relations of language. Translation includes, among other things, the transfer and transformation of different linguistic characteristics from one language to another. In terms of vocabulary, grammar, sound, style, and usage, there is a wide variety of translations between Arabic and Malay. This paper thus focuses on the challenges of translating Arabic texts in terms of types of readership, text, context, and culture

A study on the implementation of KOHA cataloguing module in Malaysian academic libraries

    Get PDF
The study explores the experiences of the Malaysian academic librariesโ€™ cataloguers in their use of the cataloguing module of Koha Open Source Software (OSS). The purpose of this study is to shed light on issues concerning Koha cataloguing module and the local practices in policy and procedure while utilising the module. An exploratory sequential research design was adopted for the study involving an online focus group interview and a questionnaire survey as the data collection techniques. Twenty-two academic libraries from public and private universities in Malaysia were purposively sampled. A total of six academic libraries participated in the focus group, whereas 41 participants took part in the survey. The study highlighted academic libraries in Malaysia embrace Koha for two main reasons - popularity as and OSS and budget constraints for a proprietary library system. The findings of the study revealed that missing records is a significant issue that cataloguers will have to deal with and there is a lack of certain features available in the Koha cataloging module, such as the label creator and search feature. Apart from that, using Koha for cataloguing does not affect the cataloguing practices in terms of policy, but it does affect the cataloguing procedure. Satisfaction level with Koha cataloguing module is high. Other academic libraries in Malaysia that have not yet made a move to Koha or are in the midst of doing so would benefit from this study

Normalizing library records display using FRBR model for al-Qur'an work-set

The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model is a conceptual entity-relationship model developed for better arrangement, collocation, and navigation in bibliographic databases. As such, a FRBRized library online catalog (OPAC) can improve the performance of OPAC as a retrieval tool. We explored the utility of FRBR framework for supporting rich indexation, and rich interaction in digital libraries using an open source FRBR tool developed by the Library of Congress. We tested the system on some MARC-based bibliographic records from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) library. Several issues have been found useful to be explored which includes multi-script, complex work, and missing fields. We also experimented on FRBRzing the work-set on al-Quran using the LOC FRBR Display Tool. This paper will elaborate on the process of FRBRizing using this open-source tool. Several problems encountered in the experiment are discussed and future enhancements are proposed. This work may initiate interest among the librarian to adopt FRBR as advancement to the existing digital library system

Conceptions and practices of metadata quality for frbr user tasks resources discovery in institutional repositories

The study applied a Metadata Quality Framework using three metrics, namely accuracy, consistency and completeness; and FRBR User Tasks Conceptual Model. The objectives of the study are to examine the current standard of metadata creation practices in institutional repositories, to examine metadata quality errors in institutional repositories, to investigate the perceived agreement of metadata quality and metadata quality errors among institutional repository staff, and to identify the relationship between metadata quality and FRBR user task

Designing FRBR-based information visualization for library resources

    No full text
The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model has emerged as a significant framework for bibliographic control, offering a conceptual structure to organize and retrieve bibliographic information effectively. This study explores the potential of FRBR as a tool for information visualization in the domain of bibliographic control. Although bibliographic information systems are important for finding and exploring library resources, some of the fundamental functionality that should be provided to aid users in their information seeking process is still absent. The objectives of this research are to investigate how FRBR can be employed to enhance the visualization of bibliographic data, examine the impact of FRBR on information organization and retrieval along with identify and analyze the challenges associated with FRBR implementation. The analysis of the study is gained through reviewing of existing literature; thus, three main aspects have been presented within the study which are FRBR interface, the impact of FRBR and the challenges of FRBR
