Investigating the Magnitude and Range of the Urban Heat Island within Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Cities experience UHIs due to the thermal properties (albedo, thermal emittance, radiative flux, and heat capacity) of human-made substances and urban geometry. This study investigated the existence of an urban heat island (UHI) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The goal of this project was to assess whether a small-scale city like Gettysburg demonstrates an UHI effect and, if present, the extent and magnitude of the UHI. We hypothesized that (1) temperatures within the city are significantly higher than the surrounding area, (2) the magnitude of the UHI will diminish as distance from the city center increases, and (3) the UHI will not extend further than 0.5 miles outside the city center. Air temperatures were collected using digital thermometers over four weeks along two different transects that each extended one mile from the center square of Gettysburg. Our results show that Gettysburg, despite its small size, has an UHI. A linear regression model shows that there is a strong correlation between temperature and distance from the center square. The magnitude of the UHI lessens with increasing distance from the center of town. The first two hypotheses were supported while the hypothesis that the UHI will be localized was not. Statistically analyses show that the temperature change remains significant past 0.5 miles. The results of this study demonstrate that even a small-scale city like Gettysburg create a UHI

Automatic Detection of Egg Shell Cracks

    Get PDF
The challenge was to find a reliable, non-intrusive means of detecting cracks in eggs. Intensity data from eggs were collected by VisionSmart for the group to analyse. Given the short time period three main questions were addressed. 1) Is there a feature of the intensity data which detects, and discriminates between pinholes, cage marks and cracks? 2) Are there ways to improve the current data collection process? 3) Are there other data collection methods which should be tried? A partial positive response to 1) is presented and describes the many problems that arose. Some answers to 2) and 3) are also presented

Correlation Between Ocean Acidification and Zooplankton in the South Pacific Gyre

    Get PDF
The South Pacific Gyre is a naturally occurring carbon sink, meaning that it absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide by dissolving it into the moving surface water. The dissolution of CO2 level will dictate the water’s acidic levels a larger the concentration of dissolved CO2 is known to increase the salt water’s acidity. A great amount of the ocean’s biomass is composed of calcifying organisms, which produce tests or shells made from calcium carbonate CaCO3.The goal of our project is to determine if there is a correlation between the water acidity across various locations, as we sailed through the South Pacific gyre and the biomass and/or biodiversity in those same locations. By studying the connection between zooplankton and acidification will allow for a better understanding of the ocean environment as acidification continues to increase. We conduct nine nighttime and twelve daytime collections which indicated no statistical significance. Our research along the S-282 cruise track was unable to find any positive or negative correlations between pH levels and zooplankton density

Emotional Intelligence and Perceived Social Support among Service Sector Employees

    Get PDF
The main objective of this study is to determine whether perceived social support affects Emotional Intelligence. The hypothesis that is intended to be proven here is that Emotional Intelligence can be used to measure mental wellness in individuals. Emotional intelligence is said to have two main dimensions that is one of personal competence and the other that of social competence. Perceived social support has been accepted as support from family, friends, and significant others. Emotional Intelligence is important because it helps individuals regulate the overflow of emotional energy welling within oneself and helps others around them cope with those overflowing emotions; hence, this study is perceived as beneficial. This study targets the service sector employees as the sector faces a diverse variety of challenges emanating from the global pandemic. 536 responses were taken, and PLS-SEM was used and applied to analyze and test out the hypotheses. The results showed that social support affects both personal and social competencies. However, in the final analysis, perceived social support turned out to have a stronger influence on personal competency.
