Columnar cacti Trichocereus terscheckii is an important source of food and water for insects, birds and wild cattle in dry areas of North West Argentina. Their fruits have been suggested as a plausible source of food, but are not directly included in the human diet yet. Stem chemistry has long been of interest because of its hallucinogenic properties, but little is known about the nutritional value. In this work, basic nutritional composition of a mature stem was analyzed establishing moisture, total fat, ash, fiber, protein, lipidic and sugar profile. The main constituents fatty acid found in T. terscheckii were linolenic, linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids, but also a rare isomer of oleic acid was relatively abundant. This pattern did not agree with the profiles found in other species of columnar cacti. Current exploration of nutritional profiles of T. terscheckii stem provides novel information that contributes to a better understanding of this species whose slow development rate, high water storage capacity and hallucinogenic properties are features that make it especially vulnerable to an increased rate of extraction, habitat fragmentation and extensive cattle ranching. Fil: Padro, Julian. Informing Educators on Effective Strategies for LTELs

    Get PDF
Research has demonstrated that students who speak languages other than English are a growing presence in U.S schools. The presentation designed for this project focuses on strategies to help and support ESL students known as long-term ELs. LTELs are typically found in grades 6–12. LTELs mainly go unnoticed in schools ,or worse yet, are misunderstood, perceived as failures. This is why this LTELs research is important to me. Many practices have been implemented in the ESL classroom settings, but research on how to scaffold and use effective instruction with these LTEL students is limited. The project involved creating a presentation slide that engages ESL teachers and provides effective instructional strategies for all educators in the ESL field. The presentation slide will primarily be used in a professional development for ESL educators, but is adaptable to all educators in the secondary schools. It includes strategies such as modeling, scaffolding, clarification ,and modification designed to effectively serve the ESL student population. The goal of the presentation project is to help LTEL students academically, and also to provide a resource for ESL teachers to go to, and find strategies to use in the classroom. We want our students to succeed and to have a better future after high school. This capstone project aims to answer the question, “what are effective instructional strategies for Long-Term Hispanic ELLs in Secondary Schools?”

This paper presents the Grand Strategy of the Russian Federation in Syria. The objective is to prove that despite the fact that Islamic terrorism might be a threat against Russian territoriality, given the emergence of Islamic State cells in the northern Caucasus, the intervention in Syria can be explained by the development of Russia’s Grand Strategy, for which the current regime is instrumental. To argue this hypothesis, the article begins explaining current circumstances in Syria, the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) and the measures taken at the international stage to tackle this organization. Further on, it exposes the concept of Grand Strategy, and explains why it is so important for Russia to keep Syria as an ally. Finally, it presents Russia’s action plan to achieve its objectives in Syria.Universidad del Rosari

Lesson Study and Service Learning in Teacher Preparation

The aim of this paper is to share an teacher preparation experience that combines Lesson Study (LS) with a Service Learning methodology. This experience is interdisciplinary and includes three subjects from first-grade Childhood Education, carried out at University of Malaga since academic year 2014-2015. Within this framework, our students carry out Service Learning projects for schools in our area that are designed and developed following the LS methodology. Service Learning projects go through the following phases (Puig, J., Martín, & Batlle, 2008): 1) Preparation by the teachers involved in the project; 2) Implementation, i.e. developing the project with the students; 3) Evaluation. The implementation phase also has three sub-phases: preparation, implementation, and round-up. It is here that the LS is developed through the following phases (Soto & Pérez, 2015): 1. Define the problem; 2. Co-operatively design an experimental lesson and its observation process; 3. First experimental lesson; 4. Analyse and review the lesson; 5. Second experimental lesson; 6. Analysis and drafting of conclusions; 7. Presentation in extended context. We were able to gather evidence on how students teachers resolved different cognitive conflicts during the process. We saw how the LS process, with its phases and cooperative work, allows them to combine creativity and unique talents in a common project that acquires meaning and relevance thanks to Service Learning. This provides a framework that facilitates the construction of solid structures related to the meaning of the educational process, and which can be used to recalibrate what it means to be a Childhood School teacher: a creative, relevant, complex experience that requires recreating the knowledge and experience that students bring with them to the University about what it means to be a Childhood School teacher.Universidad de Málaga. This paper presents the possibilities offered by Lesson and Learning Studies for training and for improving and generating knowledge by reconstructing the practical knowledge of teachers. Firstly, we provide a summary of the concept of practical knowledge and the tradition of teachers researching their own practice. This is followed by some principles of Lesson and Learning Studies, with examples of their possibilities for university teacher training taken from a case study of our own practice during a university master's degree

Background: Asthma and allergies are world-wide common chronic diseases among children and young people. Little is known about prevalence and environmental and dietary risk factors of asthma and allergies among rural and urban school children in Bolivia. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, severity and risk factors associated with asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, and eczema symptoms in children of school age in Oropeza Province – Bolivia. Methods: Overall, 2584 children (response 91%) attending fifth elementary grade in Oropeza province answered the written and the video questionnaire of the International Study on Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Lifetime, 12 months and severity prevalence were determined for asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema symptoms. The associations between: environmental and dietary factors and symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjuctivitis and eczema symptoms were analysed using logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, sex and place of living. Results: Median age of children was 11 years, 52% were female and 26% lived in rural areas. The prevalence of asthma symptoms was higher in the written (18%) than in the video questionnaire (6%). 22% of children reported symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis and 9% eczema symptoms. Overall, rural children reported more frequently symptoms of asthma and allergies than urban children. Parental smoking (adjusted OR 1.3; 95%IC 1.0-1.6), presence of disease vectors at home (fourth quartile vs. first quartile: 1.5; 1.1-2.2) and farm animals (1.3; 1.0-1.6) were statistically significant predictors of asthma symptoms detected by the written questionnaire. The associations were similar for symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. A greater adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) was inversely related with asthma symptoms in the video questionnaire (reference category: 1st quartile; second quartile 0.6; 0.3-0.9, third quartile 0.7; 0.4-1.2, fourth quartile 0.6; 0.3-1.0) Conclusion: Our results suggest that promoting a healthy diet and reducing exposure to modifiable risk factors like environmental tobacco smoke, precarious housing conditions and certain disease vectors would have a significant positive impact on asthma and allergies morbidity in children in this region
