    Control of Phomopsis Blight of Egg Plant through Fertilizer and Fungicide Management

    The experiments were conducted at Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology and in the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh during Rabi season of the year 2007-2008. Four fungicides viz. Bavistin 50 WP (Carbendazim), Tilt 250 EC (Propiconazole), Cupravit 50 WP (Copperoxychloride) and Dithane M-45 (Mancozeb) and micronutrients (Gypsum, ZnO and Boric acid) were evaluated against Phomopsis vexans causing Phomopsis blight and fruit rot of eggplant. The fungicides and micronutrients either applied individually or in combination showed significant effect in terms of per cent leaf infection, fruit infection, leaf area diseased and fruit area diseased in comparison to control. Effect of each fungicide applied in combination with micronutrients always showed better performance in reducing disease incidence and disease severity than the fungicides applied alone. Among the fungicides, Bavistin 50 WP (0.1%) proved to be effective arresting the spore germination and mycelia growth of Phomopsis vexans assayed in in vitro test. Reduction of leaf area diseased caused by Bavistin 50 WP (0.1%) in combination with micronutrients were 58.17, 67.37, 78.41 and 85.25%, respectively at preflowering, post-flowering, fruiting and fruit ripening stages while Bavistin 50 WP (0.1%) alone reduced by 52.22, 58.67, 74.19 and 83.09%, respectively at those stages. Similarly reduction of fruit area diseased caused by Bavistin 50 WP (0.1%) in combination with micronutrients were 57.93 and 79.79%, respectively at fruiting and fruit ripening stages while Bavistin 50WP (0.1%) alone reduced by 56.93 and 76.14%, respectively at those stages.     Analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of Crinum asiaticum leaf alcoholic extract in animal models

    This study investigated the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of Crinum asiaticum (Amaryllidaceae) leaf ethanolic extract. Analgesic effect was investigated in acetic acid induced writhing model and formalin induced licking model in swiss albino mice. Anti-inflammatory effect was conducted in carrageenan-induced paw edema model of albino rat. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc multiple comparison test. In analgesic study, C. asiaticum extract inhibited 42.34±3.20% of acetic acid induced pain at higher dose of 2.0 g/kg body weight. The effect was statistically significant (p<0.001) compared to the positive control, diclofenac sodium (10 mg/kg). The extract reduced the formalin induced pain 22.60±1.39% in early phase and 27.11±0.87% in late phase at the same dose of 2.0 g/kg and the reductions were significant (p<0.01) compared to the positive control morphine (0.5 mg/kg). In a time-dependent inhibition of carrageenan-induced paw edema model, the extract promoted the inhibitions of paw edema 51.60±2.50% at the 1st h and 40.80±0.52% at the 4th h of administration. These inhibitions were also significant (p<0.01) in comparison to those promoted by diclofenac sodium. No mortality was observed in acute toxicity test.     A Novel 2D Feature Extraction Method for Fingerprints Using Minutiae Points and Their Intersections

    The field of biometrics has evolved tremendously for over the last century. Yet scientists are still continuing to come up with precise and efficient algorithms to facilitate automatic fingerprint recognition systems. Like other applications, an efficient feature extraction method plays an important role in fingerprint based recognition systems. This paper proposes a novel feature extraction method using minutiae points of a fingerprint image and their intersections. In this method, initially, it calculates the ridge ends and ridge bifurcations of each fingerprint image. And then, it estimates the minutiae points for the intersection of each ridge end and ridge bifurcation. In the experimental evaluation, we tested the extracted features of our proposed model using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier and experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately classify different fingerprint images

    Varietal preference of okra jassid, Amrasca devastans (Dist.) under field condition of Bangladesh

    An experiment was conducted in the Field Laboratory, Department of Entomology, (BAU), Mymensingh on the varietal preference of okra jassid, Amrasca devastans (Dist.) using 14 okra varieties viz. F1 Tamanna, Hybrid Okra Gunyon, Okra F1 Green Soft, OK 285, Okra F1 Green Star 33, F1 Hybrid Fresh Power, F1 Hybrid Sarosh 3, Hybrid Okra (MDR), Okra Nabil, BARI-1 (Samrat), Hybrid Chamak and Local variety during March to June 2014. The results indicated that host preference of jassid differed significantly among the 14 varieties tested. Three varieties viz. Hybrid Chamak, Arka Anamika and Kolatia were the least preferred by jassid. Five varieties viz. Okra Nabil, Hybrid Okra (MDR), F1 Hybrid Fresh Power, Local variety, and OK 285 were comparatively highly preferred and rest of the six varieties viz. Okra F1 Green Star 33, BARI-1 (Samrat), F1 Tamanna, F1 Hybrid Sarosh 3, Hybrid Okra Gunyon, and Okra F1 Green Soft were moderately preferred by jassid. This variation of preference of okra jassid might be due to different morphological and physiological characters of selected varieties. It could be concluded that comparatively resistant varieties selected from the present study might be incorporated to develop of IPM package for jassid

    Relationship between weather variables and new daily covid-19 cases in Dhaka, Bangladesh

The present study investigated the relationship between the transmission of COVID-19 infections and climate indicators in Dhaka, Bangladesh, using coronavirus infections data available from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Bangladesh. The Spearman rank correlation test was carried out to study the association of seven climate indicators, including humidity, air quality, minimum temperature, precipitation, maximum temperature, mean temperature, and wind speed with the COVID-19 outbreak in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study found that, among the seven indicators, only two indicators (minimum temperature and average temperature) had a significant relationship with new COVID-19 cases. The study also found that air quality index (AQI) had a strong negative correlation with cumulative cases of COVID-19 in Dhaka city. The results of this paper will give health regulators and policymakers valuable information to lessen the COVID-19 spread in Dhaka and other countries around the world

    Age-Related Differences of Risk Profile and Angiographic Findings in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease

    Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major health problem which imposes a significant burden on health caresystems because of high morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To compare the risk factors profile for coronary heartdisease in young and old subjects. Methods: Total 100 patients (50 subjects less than 40 years of age and 50 subjectsmore than 40 years of age) with acute coronary syndrome or stable angina who were undergoing coronary angiogram inthe Department of Cardiology, University Cardiac Center, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dhaka, fromJuly 2006 to June 2008 were evaluated for the presence coronary artery disease risk factors e.g. hypertension, dyslipidemiaand smoking. Results: The mean age of the study population in younger group was (33.0 ± 6.4) years and in older group(52.0±8.6). The male to female ratio in both groups was 4:1. Smokers were more in younger group (70.0% vs. 46.0%) (p =0.032). Hypertension was less in the younger group (38.0% vs. 58.0%) (p = 0.045). Presence of diabetes was higher in theolder age group (34.0% vs. 4.0%) (p = 0.001). Higher incidence of family history of coronary heart disease was in theyounger age group. The total cholesterol was higher in older group (182.9 ± 33.1) vs. (171.1 ± 24.8 mg/dl) (p = 0.047). 68%of patients of older group and 38% of younger group had stenosis in left anterior descending artery (p = 0.003). Theinvolvement of left circumflex and right coronary artery in older age group were higher (56% and 66% respectively) thanthose in younger group (36% and 40% respectively) (p = 0.045 and p = 0.009).     Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a complex and multifactorial disorder of oro-facial region. It is one of the most common disorders in maxillofacial region. The usual complain of the patients with this syndrome are pain in the area of the jaw and associated muscles, eating problem, chewing and locking of the jaw. It is more common in female than male.
