    Physical modelling of low-cost modifications to the Crump Weir in order to improve fish passage : development of favourable swimming conditions and investigation of the hydrometric effect

    More than 350 Crump-type weirs (which are triangular in profile) form part of the Environment Agency's hydrometric network in rivers across England and Wales. These weirs operate as effective measurement structures and are useful over a large flow range. However, they also act as barriers that impede the passage of many species of coarse fish within their natural habitat. The primary aim of this research project was to recommend modifcations to Crump weirs in order to improve fish passage, while still allowing the weirs to fulfll their hydrometric purpose in a reliable way. It was an additional requirement that any proposed solution(s) be both practical and achievable at low-cost. This is in contrast to conventional fish pass solutions, that tend to be expensive, are generally not hydrometrically rated, and most of which were not designed with coarse fish in mind. The method used was a model study conducted in the laboratory, which allowed for a great number of layouts to be trialled. Laboratory research combined with fish swimming data provides a basis for projecting successful fish ascents. Brimpton weir on the River Enborne was chosen as a suitable reference on which to base laboratory model tests. The preferred arrangement (termed a `rotated-V' layout) was found to be a series of baffles located on the downstream slope of the Crump weir. These baffles effectively act as weirs at low flows and roughness elements at high flows. Each baffle has a slot which helps to form a path of ascent for fish. The base closest to the crest was set at the same height as the crest, as this led to optimum low velocities in the slots on the downstream slope. Extensive testing revealed that the proposed solution results in a change in a weir's hydrometric characteristics. However, it was demonstrated that the deviation of the coefficient of discharge is predictable. Therefore, it allows for reliable flow measure- ment to be achieved (subject to a standardised calibration trial using volumetric flow measurement techniques). In addition, a detailed measurement and analysis of wa- ter velocities within the recommended solution strongly suggest that it substantially improves on the fish passage capability of a Crump weir.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Il s’agit d’examiner à la fois les discours, les images (car le digital porte et enclot d’autres médias, que sont la langue, l’écriture, la parole et l’image, le son et la musique), les dispositifs numériques eux-mêmes et les ergonomies développant le service religieux proposé, mais d’examiner aussi les contextes économiques et socio-politiques qui peuvent motiver, expliquer ou fonder ces communications, dans le cadre d’une vision non pas sociologique mais centrée sur l’information et la communication, soit la production de sens dans une situation d’altérité, recourant à diverses médiations techno-sémiotiques.     Expert guidance on the multidisciplinary management of cystinosis in adolescent and adult patients

Renal symptoms typically develop in the first few months of life, with extra-renal manifestations becoming apparent over the next 10–20 years, which require coordinated multidisciplinary care. Here, we describe a consensus-based guidance to support the management of adolescents and adults living with cystinosis. The programme was led by a Steering Committee (SC) of six experts in the management of patients with cystinosis, who identified a list of 15 key questions reflecting the multi-organ effects of cystinosis. An Extended Faculty (EF) of eight additional specialists was invited to answer the questions via an online digital platform using a quasi-Delphi approach. The consolidated answers were summarized into recommendations. Where evidence was lacking, recommendations were developed using collective expert consensus. The EF was asked to agree/disagree with the clinical recommendations. The expert-agreed clinical recommendations provide guidance that considers both renal and extra-renal systems. The topics covered are advice on fertility and family planning, consideration of the nervous, muscular, ophthalmic, cardio-respiratory, endocrine, dermatological and gastrointestinal systems, as well as guidance on dental care, diet, lifestyle, and improving quality of life and psychological well-being. In summary, this work outlines recommendations and a checklist for clinicians with a vision for improving and standardizing the multidisciplinary care for patients with cystinosis.The programme was supported by Chiesi Farmaceutici Spa. Chiesi was not involved in the content or outcomes of the programme which were solely determined by the SC and extended faculty experts

    The Ordovician System: From overlapping unit stratotypes to Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points

    For nearly a century the Ordovician System was hidden as Murchison and Sedgwick tussled over the overlapping ground between their Silurian and Cambrian systems. The Ordovician is, in fact, one of the longest of the geological periods, characterised by major magmatic and plate tectonic activity; the roles of microcontinents and volcanic archipelagos were significant in shaping the Ordovician planet and the evolution of its biotas, associated with an immense biodiversification, significant fluctuations in climate and sea levels, and the first Phanerozoic mass extinction of marine invertebrates. The period was unique in being thalassocratic; epicontinental seas had a wider reach than during any other geological period. The land areas were restricted to isolated microblocks of archipelagos of various sizes with low relief, with rivers traversing gentle gradients, carrying sparse terrigenous material seaward. It is an ancient world with few parallels elsewhere in the Phanerozoic, and little in common with Holocene ecosystems and environments. The Ordovician System was introduced by Charles Lapworth as a solution to the stratotypes of overlapping units loosely defined by Adam Sedgwick for the Cambrian and by Roderick Murchison for the Silurian. Following a period of intensive research into all the key regions of the globe, unit stratotypes in the type areas of England and Wales have been replaced by seven global stages and three series based on Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points, enhancing the definition of these chronostratigraphic units and facilitating global correlation. As a consequence, the biological and geological events during the period can be recognised, and the magnitude and significance of originations and extinctions understood. A global synthesis of successions in Europe (Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 532) and the rest of the world (Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 533) has emphasised the importance of a universal language for Ordovician chronostratigraphy and its dividends

    Ethane (C2H6) is the most abundant Non-Methane HydroCarbon (NMHC) in the Earth’s atmosphere, with a lifetime of approximately 2 months. Its main sources are biomass burning, natural gas loss and biofuel consumption. Oxidation by the hydroxyl radical is the major C2H6 sink as it controls its strong modulation throug the year. C2H6 is involved in the formation of tropospheric O3 and in the destruction of atmospheric methane through changes in OH. C2H6 is an indirect greenhouse gas with a net-global warming potential of 5.5 (100-yr horizon). Updates of retrieval parameters such as the spectroscopic linelists have been recently published. We will therefore characterize three µ-windows encompassing the strongest C2H6 features after careful selection of these new parameters, accounting at best for all interfering species. The aim is to lessen the fitting residuals while maximizing the information content, the precision and the reliability of the retrieved product. We will present updated C2H6 total and tropospheric column time series, using the SFIT-2 algorithm (v3.91) and high-resolution Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) solar absorption spectra recorded with a Bruker 120HR instrument, at the high altitude research station of the Jungfraujoch (46.5°N, 8.0°E, 3580 m asl), within the framework of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC, http://www.ndacc.org). Comparisons with synthetic data produced by chemical transport models will also be presented

    Tropospheric water vapour isotopologue data (H₂¹⁶O, H₂¹⁸O, and HD¹⁶O) as obtained from NDACC/FTIR solar absorption spectra

    We report on the ground-based FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) tropospheric water vapour isotopologue remote sensing data that have been recently made available via the database of NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change; ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ndacc/MUSICA/) and via doi:10.5281/zenodo.48902. Currently, data are available for 12 globally distributed stations. They have been centrally retrieved and quality-filtered in the framework of the MUSICA project (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water). We explain particularities of retrieving the water vapour isotopologue state (vertical distribution of H216O, H218O, and HD16O) and reveal the need for a new metadata template for archiving FTIR isotopologue data. We describe the format of different data components and give recommendations for correct data usage. Data are provided as two data types. The first type is best-suited for tropospheric water vapour distribution studies disregarding different isotopologues (comparison with radiosonde data, analyses of water vapour variability and trends, etc.). The second type is needed for analysing moisture pathways by means of H2O, δD-pair distributions
